Prep Academic Life

Academic Life in the Prep School

All our children are encouraged to try new challenges, and abilities and talents are developed and supported. Small classes create opportunities for self-expression, performance and participation. Children are encouraged to be supportive of each other and all successes are celebrated.

Knowing our pupils means that we can ensure each gets just the right balance of support and challenge. A broad and varied curriculum stimulates and engages the children, with opportunities to develop their creative, artistic, musical and sporting talents.

Lessons are lively and exciting, expectations are high and the children thrive in the relaxed but hardworking atmosphere. There are academic challenges for children of all abilities and all are encouraged to develop a love for learning. Playtimes are considered as important learning times and as important as lesson times.

All aspects of numeracy and literacy skills combine to create a foundation on which pupils will build their learning in the Senior School. Technology is used to support teaching and learning, and to ensure all pupils develop the independent learning skills needed for success in the future.

Speaking and listening receive particular attention in the Prep School. Visitors often comment on the confidence with which pupils contribute, either to regular class discussions or on more formal occasions. A programme of assemblies and individual talks help to develop confidence and self-expression.

In Years 4 - 6 our weekly Endeavour lessons for each age group provide excellent opportunities for children to work in teams, develop cross curricular skills, show initiative, take risks and build awareness of the wider communities beyond the School.

Pupils in Year 3 participate in weekly Forest School sessions which encourage them to harness an awareness and appreciation for their beautiful surroundings as well as refining practical skills.
