A Message from Mrs Knox

Over the course of the week, I have been taken by the many stories about how people have been raising money for Children in Need.  Some amazing projects are taking place that are helping to change the lives of disadvantaged children and young people all over the country. One quote in particular struck me: "As one person I cannot change the world, but I can change the world for one person". This really resonated particularly in light of our anti-bullying week and the theme "One Kind Word" which has been our focus this week. Thank you to our Charity Committee for collecting money over the last few days and, to you our parents, for your kind generosity. Final rehearsals are taking place for our musical “Moby Dick” and I wish all performers the very best of luck. I am sure it will be totally brilliant. Have a lovely weekend.

Mrs Knox

Anti-Bullying Week

This week has given the Duke of Kent School community the chance to reflect on how we all treat each other. The theme of Anti-Bullying Week was 'ONE KIND WORD' and the emphasis has very much been on promoting positivity and kindness. One kind word, one simple smile, an act of kindness can trigger happiness and further positive behaviour. We have also celebrated our differences on ODD SOCKS DAY. We are all different, the world would be a very bland place without individuality. The lessons that have been taught this week have been to help us enjoy all of these wonderful differences, from sexuality to religion, from the colour of our skin to the different hobbies that we enjoy.

Although the theme of this week has been kindness, it is also extremely important to understand that acts of bullying take place throughout society and therefore it is essential that our pupils are aware that they should not tolerate these and should talk to someone in their circle of support, whether this be a trusted adult, parent, teacher or a friend. Pupils have been taught to not stand by and watch continued acts of unkindness take place; they should try to be an upstander not a bystander!

The ONE KIND WORD theme has helped many of us reflect on how kindness towards each other makes us feel. Please click on the link to see a few examples.

Christmas Shoebox Appeal

A big THANKYOU! from the Charity Committee to everyone who donated to this years Christmas Shoebox Appeal. Over the last few weeks, you have donated over 60, lovingly wrapped shoeboxes stuffed with gifts. The Charity Committee have been working hard to check and collate the boxes ready for collection by Cranleigh Rotary, who will be shipping them to their relief mission in Romania in the coming weeks.

This is such a simple initiative that makes a tangible difference to young peoples' experience of Christmas. We have been genuinely touched by your generosity and enthusiasm the Duke of Kent School Community has shown - some of you have even got your friends and neighbours involved in donations! We really appreciate your effort and kindness.

Prep and Pre-prep News

On Monday morning, Prep and Pre-prep pupils welcomed Miss Rogers, a nutritionist for Holroyd Howe (our School catering company), into school. To begin the morning, she spoke with the Sustainability Committee, highlighting the importance of avoiding food waste by only asking for and using what we need. Each year group then had a 30 minute workshop about the importance of eating a balanced and nutritional diet, with each child heading to lunch with the aim of ‘eating a rainbow’.

Year 6 became teachers on Monday morning, leading Year 3 pupils through how to find equivalent fractions. They used visual aids and games to help the younger children build confidence in recognising and showing equivalents, and a fine job they did too! Elsewhere in Maths, Reception pupils have been exploring shapes this week, whilst Year 1 have enjoyed using interlocking cubes, meter sticks and rulers to measure the length of objects from all over the classroom.

Following the array of varied and wonderful socks on display throughout Monday, Wednesday morning saw Mrs Nicholson host an assembly for Prep School pupils regarding Anti-bullying week. Pupils reflected on what bullying is and offered opinions on how we can halt any hurtful behaviour that we see and spread kindness.

In Pre-prep Science Club this week, the children made paper aeroplanes and modified them to see if they could make them fly further. In Prep School Science, Year 4 have been making their own thermometers and Year 5 investigated whether the mass of a bottle of fizzy drink is reduced if you shake it really hard (whilst keeping the lid on, of course!). In Topic, Year 3 have been comparing the modern and ancient Olympics, including watching some highlights from Tokyo. Year 6 have also been reflecting on historical events and figures from the Old Testament, tracing the family tree of Moses back to Noah, before having a go at making their own.

Match Reports

Netball: U12/13 A v. Pennthorpe

On Wednesday afternoon the U13 A team played Pennthorpe at home.  For the opposition this was one of their first netball matches of the year, so there was lots of excitementto step back onto the court.  Duke of Kent School used the first quarter to find their feet and settle into the rhythm of the game. By half time, the team had worked hard making excellent passes down the court to our shooters, Isla B, Edie H, Bella S and Jessica I who managed to score a total of 8 goals.

In the second half, Pennthorpe also found their rhytmn and were defending well but Niamh A in GD out the pressure on to ensure she was making every attempt at an interception.  In the final quarter, the girls worked really hard using space, timing their passes and going for all rebounds off the goals. Their hard work really paid off with a fantastic 21-7 win. Well done firls.

Mrs Woolgar

Netball: U12/13 B v. Pennthorpe

On Wednesday afternoon, the sun was shining and the U12/13 B team were raring to go! The girls had some time to warm up and adjust to new positions before starting their game of 5 a side Netball. Pennthorpe started fantastically well so Tabitha S-B, playing in GD, had to work hard to make key interceptions for her team. The game continued at a high pace and both teams demonstrated some great play, using the space and making some brilliantly powerful passes. Duke of Kent School had plenty of subs meaning that everyone was giving it 100% when it was their chance on the court. Matilda R played in C and covered the court brilliantly. Our shooters gained in confidence as the match progressed, with Annie B and Mercy M both scoring in the final quarter. It was a well fought match with Pennthorpe coming out on top on this occasion. Well done to all the girls involved for demonstrating great perseverance and effort throughout the afternoon.

Miss Vickers

Netball: U11 v. Pennthorpe

On Wednesday afternoon, the U11 Netball team headed to Pennthorpe to play not one but two matches. We began by facing Pennthorpe’s A Team. It was a closely fought match with masses to celebrate from the game play, with excellent interceptions and fruitful passages of passing aplenty. Superb defending from Isla and Erin C, lovely movement through the middle of the court by Eve M, Poppy F and Grace M and some top shooting work by Isabella N and Tansy T made for a competitive match, resulting in a final score line of 8-4 to Pennthorpe.

After a short break, we then took on their B team. Duke of Kent Shool finished the first half up 3-1, however, the start of the second half saw Lola become a roaring blaze in the position of GA, scoring goal after goal! Supported by Grace M and Tansy T in the attacking circle, Duke of Kent School scored 9 goals during this second game! Some excellent leg work and passing from Holly in the centre, alongside brilliant defending from Penny A, Erin C and Isla W, meant that Pennthorpe were restricted to one goal. It was a fabulous effort from all the girls, and they should be especially proud of the team spirit and encouragement that they showed towards one another. Well done!

Mrs Green

Netball: U8 and U9 v. Pennthorpe

On Thursday afternoon, the U8 & U9 girls welcomed Pennthorpe to Duke of Kent School for some Netball matches. In order to ensure all the girls from both schools got plenty of match experience, we played three "high 5" Netball matches involving all the same positions apart from the WA and WD. Team blue and team yellow were first up, the girls took a little bit of time to get into the match but then they came alive! The blue team had some close matches and demonstrated real quality in their passes and decision making, they were up against some strong opposition and scored multiple goals in their games. Their matches ended in a draw and a loss. Meanwhile, the yellow team demonstrated some great movement and linked their passes well to create goal scoring opportunities, they were victorious with a 4-2 win. The green team had time to prepare themselves and watch their fellow team mates so when it came to their turn they were focused and ready to go. The greens played brilliantly as a team and demonstrated some great dodging and catches leading to another brilliant win for Duke of Kent School. Well done to all the girls involved for their excellent effort and determination! In particular, congratulations to Ruby W, Hope N and Florence A for being voted girl of the game for their respective teams!

Football: U16 v. Box Hill

The U16 team travelled to play Box Hill on Tuesday and showed great grit, determination and an improved sense of calmness when in possession of the ball. The Duke of Kent School team passed with confidence and showed good movement when not in possession of the ball. The progress that the U16 team has made this term has been wonderful to see and the positivity that each player receives from other players is equally impressive. Well done to all who played in this 2-0 win.

Mr Herbert

Football: U14 A v. Box Hill School

On Tuesday, the U14 A team played a football match against Box Hill School. The match started well for Duke of Kent School with some good positive play in attack and solid defence. After the good start two goals were conceded before half time but the team came out for the second half playing well with some great play from Toby T down the left hand side creating good chances for the team. Well played to everyone involved.

Mr Orme

Football: U12 v. Box Hill

The U12 team that played Box Hill on Wednesday was significantly changed from the one that took on the same opposition at the start of term. Many players from the first match have been promoted to play up a year and this would be a tough test for the players that have taken their place. However, this did not show as Duke of Kent School played some very nice football. The movement, communication and individual skills on show were very impressive! Monty L scored four, Harry L struck a fantastic goal and Rupert H got the sixth goal in a 6-3 win. This game was not as comfortable as it may seem and a handful of excellent saves by Sam R definitely kept us in front. Well done to all who played.

Mr Herbert

Football: U10/11 v. Frensham Heights

This Wednesday, the U10/11 A team played against Frensham Heights School in a football match. The game started with some great play from both teams with Ben W making some good saves. Duke of Kent School then conceded a couple of goals but the team kept working hard throughout leading to a fantastic goal from Arthur H. Well played to everyone involved and keep working hard on the technical side of the game.

What Parents Need to Know About Netflix

Netflix is a subscription-based streaming service that allows users to watch TV shows and movies on any internet-enabled device that supports the software, such as smart TVs, phones and tablets. The pandemic saw a surge in children consuming on-demand content as many families relaxed their screen-time rules. Netflix’s diverse range of programming caters for all age groups – so it’s important for parents to recognise the potential risks of children using the service and the measures to help their child enjoy a safe streaming experience.

Weekly Wellbeing

Today is Children in Need’s 2021 big fundraising effort and many of you will, I am sure, watch some of the appeals show tonight. It’s always an opportunity to reflect on how fortunate we may be in regard to others and whilst exercising our empathy, consider and admire the resilience of others. Maybe you are: a drummer inspired by Owain Wyn Evans 24hr drum challenge: looking forward to a dance or sing with Sophie Ellis Bextor’s Kitchen Disco or a cyclist who has been inspired by the Rickshaw Challenges of the last 10 years.  Behind all the exciting celebrity-filled challenges it is also important to remember that the money raised has far and near reaching effects in supporting young people - the charity’s motto is:Together we can change young lives.

I mention Children in Need today because they are a huge supporter and funder of childrens’ mental health and wellbeing initiatives. I myself, along with a number of other volunteers completed my specialist children and young people bereavement support training via Cruse which was funded by Children in Need. This means that children in the surrounding areas are able to receive 1-1 grief counselling either in their school or via Zoom free of charge and delivered by these volunteers. I have witnessed the significance of this in young people’s lives again and again and am grateful to Children in Need for this.

Their commitment to mental health is reflected in this hard hitting documentary more suitable for adults and older children.

A Message from the School Nurses

It's been a very encouraging week at School, with no new cases of Covid this week at the time of writing. Senior School pupils and staff please do continue to perform your twice weekly asymptomatic lateral flow tests on Sunday and Wednesday evenings (and record the results online).

The JCVI has announced this week that 16 to 17 year olds should now be offered a second dose of the Covid vaccine (to be given 12 weeks after the first).  To book your vaccinations, please visit this web address:

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirus-vaccination/book-coronavirus-vaccination/

At School, other winter bugs are beginning to circulate, as is quite normal for this time of year.  Please ensure your child brings a full water bottle to school each day to keep their throats hydrated.  Pupils are also welcome to carry throat lozenges with them at School if that helps (please supply your own).

Do remember, that if your child has a fever, new continuous cough, or loss/change of smell or taste, they will be asked to stay at home and book a PCR test to rule out Covid. Lateral flow tests are only designed for use in people who are well, and unfortunately sometimes Covid symptoms can appear very similar to the common cold, so it's always best to get a more sensitive PCR test done to double check.  Thank you to those who have been tested this week - it's very reassuring to have some negative PCR results returned!

Enjoy your weekend...give your immune system a boost to help fight off the winter bugs - exercise well, eat well, sleep well!

Duke of Kent School Singers

After a three week pause the Duke of Kent School Singers managed to get together for a singsong on Thursday morning.  As always there was as much laughter as there was singing as Mr Rye tried to get us to sing vocal warm-ups that had us all tongue-tied and using our brains far too much for so early on in the morning! We ended our session with some lovely harmony and managed to achieve a great rendition of ‘Let it Be’!

New members are always welcome, we meet every Thursday in the PA hall at 8:20 am until 9 am. No singing next week however because of senior production.

Senior Production

The PADoK ladies will be selling ice creams during the interval at all three performances of Moby Dick.  The cost will be £2.50 for a tub of ice cream, payment by card or exact change please.  Thank you.

PADoK Book Club

The PADOK Book Club chose The Christmas Pig by J.K. Rowling to read to get all the family into the Christmas spirit and we have decided to delay meeting by a week to give us more time to read the book.  As this time we are reading the book with our children, we thought it would be lovely for them to join us to talk about the book and they can also learn more about what goes on at a Book Club.  We thought the best way to do this as we meet in the evening is via Zoom and to not make it too late for them, we thought hot drinks and nibbles at 7pm to meet virtually would suit most families. So we would love to see you on the 2nd December to discuss the adventures of Jack and The Christmas Pig, and if you haven’t read it, to learn more about why it’s such a magical, heart-warming and page turning adventure.

Optional Senior School Hoodie

The Senior School hoodies have been redesigned by members of the School Council and the finished product can be seen above.  They have done a fantastic job at putting this design together and now finally getting to see the finished product.

This new hoodie is available from Stevenson's on their website: https://www.stevensons.co.uk/.  There is also the option to have your child's initials printed onto the front of the hoodie for a slight additional cost, something we would advise to avoid mixing up tops with other pupils. This hoodie is not an essential item of School uniform, so there is no expectation for pupils to have it.

If you wish to see the sample, please pop into the Main Office to see me and have a look at the new hoodie.
