 Message from Mrs Knox

The Remembrance commemoration of 11th November is always a moving event and this year was no less so. We were joined by Lieutenant Colonel Debs Taylor from the Royal Logistics Corporal who spoke eloquently about those who volunteered and served in past world wars and then paid tribute to those who continue to serve today. Poems, written by Annie B and Holly B, were beautifully read. We all came together as a whole School to pay our respects around the flagpole.  Congratulations to Kora W for playing the Last Post so beautifully.  Thank you to Mr Lodge and Mr Seeley for organising a special commemoration. Have a lovely weekend.

Mrs Knox

Surrey County Hockey Success

Massive congratulations to Niamh A in Year 8! She has been selected to play in the girls U14 Surrey County Hockey team. This is a tremendous achievement and a tough side to be picked for.

Niamh has dedicated her time outside of School to this goal and we are so pleased she has achieved it! We will keep you posted of her successes in her new team.

Congratulations Niamh!

Remembrance Day

The early morning mist on Thursday provided an evocative scene at school for our annual Remembrance Day. The silhouettes on the hill (a pilot, two soldiers and a suffragette), created by Mrs Kerr, and the double flags, also provided a wonderful backdrop for the morning's events. In the PA Hall Mr Lodge spoke of his 'other' job as an Army officer before we were treated to readings by Holly B and Annie B, which were the winning entries for the House Remembrance writing competition. Our wonderful guest, Lt Col Debs Taylor, the Commanding Officer of 151 Regiment of the Royal Logistic Corps, spoke of the role of her unit, including how 151 Regt assisted in the response to COVID 19 in London. She also discussed sacrifice, not just in war, but in terms of the effort people such as NHS workers have made in recent months. The entire School gathered at the flagpole for the Last Post ceremony. After an ode to The Fallen read by Mrs Knox, wreaths were laid by Mr (Maj) Lodge, Casper C, Lucy P, Erin C and Johnny B. Kora W played a superb rendition of the Last Post and Reveille which provided a highly fitting tribute to this poignant occasion.

We shall remember them.

Year 5 Trip to Winchester

It was with great excitement and anticipation that Year 5 set off to visit Winchester Science Museum on Tuesday and they were not disappointed.

Here are some of their comments about the trip.

" We started off with a workshop on "Matter". We created slime with PVA Glue , alcohol and borax- the result was a mess! The second type we made was an improvement- it was awesome!" Remy M and Thibaut J

"The Planetarium was out of this world. We learnt lots of interesting facts about space: did you know that Uranus was discovered by Herschel and he wanted to name it "George"- well Georgium Sidus which is Latin for George's star. He wanted to call it George after King George 3rd who was his patron but other scientists didn't agree!" Penny A and Holly B

" We really enjoyed making slime and discovered that slime is a different type of matter" Lola C and Grace M

" The Planetarium was the coolest thing we have ever done" Arthur D-K and Dante R

"Our favourite part was the Planetarium, we learnt that Neptune is made of methane and that Saturn has more moons than Jupiter. " Henry O'B and Freddie P

Well done to Year 5 who were very enthusiastic and listened very carefully in all the workshops.

House Bake Off Semi Finals

The semi-finals for the Duke of Kent School Bake Off were held this week. Our 8 semi-finalists once had a chance to once again dazzle the judges with the cakes that set them apart from the rest of the 40 bakes that were entered this year.

The attitude of the pupils was excellent. All of the Prep and Senior school competitors approached their semi-final with enthusiasm and gusto. Whether it was adapting when things didn’t go quite as expected or encouraging and congratulating their competition on their hard work. The quality of the cakes was truly exceptional; which made it even more difficult for the judges to pick out two Prep and two Senior entries to progress to the final.

Our finalists are:

Prep School - Alexander I (Hawk), Erin C (Buzzard)

Senior School - Humphrey G (Hawk), Alex F (Peregrine)

Well done to all of the semi-finalists! You all have a great deal to be proud of. Good luck to our finalists! Next week they will discover what challenge awaits them for the Grand Final on Monday 29th November.

Year 3 Assembly

On Wednesday morning, it was Year 3’s first class assembly! We chose to base it on one of the School Values - Kindness. The children shared how doing random acts of kindness can colour people’s world and fill their invisible bucket. They also suggested ideas about random acts of kindness that can be easily completed at school or at home. All of the children did a fantastic job of learning their lines and should be incredibly proud of themselves. It was so wonderful to see the class so animated and enthusiastic about their performance!

Prep and Pre-prep News

The Prep School Student Council have been busy this week, organising the outdoor break time activities box. They have written some rules, made a poster and a timetable to make sure all the year groups get to enjoy the equipment. Thanks to Council members carrying the equipment down, the toy box is now full and we look forward to seeing the pupils making the most of this resource from next week. Prep School pupils have also enjoyed the opportunity to play table tennis in Ness Hall at lunchtime, for which each year group has been designated a particular day each week.

On Thursday, we welcomed Year 3 and 4 parents for our Autumn Term Parents’ Meetings. We hope you enjoyed coming in to see the Prep School corridor as much as we enjoyed having you in!

Many thanks to all the families who have sent in items for the shoe box appeal. We have had a wonderful response to this initiative, and Cranleigh Rotary Club will undoubtedly be incredibly grateful for all the donations. Thank you.

It is now that time of year when the Prep School begin to prepare for the Christmas Fayre. As part of their Enterprise badge, Years 4, 5 and 6 are using their Endeavour lessons to create crafts and fayre games to entice people to part with their money. All in the name of charity! With this in mind, we would be very grateful for any craft materials (especially cardboard!) or Christmas decorations that you might have lying around spare at home. Many thanks in advance.

Matches

U15.16 v. Frensham Heights

On Tuesday the  U15/16 Netball team faced Frensham Heights away.  The first quarter was a slightly scrappy but after a team talk at the end of the quarter the team found their flow and settled.  There was great defending from Kora W (GK), Jas K (GD) and Zoe L (WD), the girls worked so hard to close down space and really put the pressure on. At half-time, the score was 11-11.

In the second half, the girls found a new lease of life and their determination to win was clear.  Aoife W (WA) was throwing exceptionally accurate balls into our shooters Maddie I (GA), Amber C/Audrey W (GS) and the success rate was high and with Macy B always offering on the circle meant that they could work the ball in and out of the circle to get in the perfect position to shoot. Imogen C (GK) turned the ball over copious amounts in the final quarter which helped the team cross the finish line with a superb 22-16 win. Well done to the whole team, you all played so well, and it was a great example of tenacity and determination.

Mrs Woolgar

Hockey: U13 A v. Belmont

On Wednesday afternoon, the U13A girls Hockey team welcomed Belmont to our Wilsons' Pitch for their match. With some drizzle still in the air, the girls got warmed up with great enthusiasm and began preparing for their game. The game started at a high tempo and this continued throughout the afternoon! Both teams worked tirelessly, always tracking back to help the team and attacking with great determination. Sydney R found her position when playing in defence, her brilliantly powerful hit helped us to get the ball out wide to our players when taking a free hit or 16. Alongside Sydney in defence, Belles H and Matilda R made countless tackles at important moments in the game. Duke of Kent School took the lead with a great goal by Niamh A but Belmont came back fighting and scored within minutes to level the match at 1-1. As the game went on, the girls began to find their flow and the passes started to come together. The midfield players including Bella S, Isla B, Jess I played some great balls through to the forwards and created many goal scoring opportunities. The game was of great quality and end to end stuff but Duke of Kent School managed to find the next gear and the goals began to flow. The score finished 9-3 to Duke of Kent School. A huge well done to Maggie B in goal, for making multiple important saves and showing great determination. Congratulations to Isla B for being voted girl of the game. Well done to everyone involved for a great afternoon of hockey and thank you members of the B team who stepped up during the afternoon!

Hockey: Years 3 and 4 v. Belmont

Years 3 & 4 had a wonderful time on Thursday afternoon playing their first hockey match of the term. We welcomed Belmont to our Wilsons' Pitch and everyone enjoyed getting involved and practising their new skills including dribbling, passing and tackling. It was a great afternoon finishing in a 3-2 win for the U8s and a 2-0 win for the U9s. Well done to all the girls involved!

Cross Country Competition at Ardingly College

On Monday the U9, U11 and U13 Cross Country team travelled to Ardingly College. The format was a little different to usual. The runners ran in heats trying to reach an A or B final. The distance of each race was shorter than normal, but each runner needed to run twice throughout the afternoon. This took great determination, particularly for the younger runners who found the first race quite daunting. All of the Duke of Kent School team ran to their very best ability and should be proud of their efforts. Ardingly were a little too strong but Duke of Kent School performed well in comparison to the other three schools involved.

This was a worthwhile experience for our runners and it will stand them in good stead for the upcoming ISA London South events next term.

Well done to all who made the school team and thank you to the amazing support from parents.

Mr Herbert

Football: U16 v. Kingswood House

The U16 football team played Kingswood House at home on Tuesday afternoon. Both teams were very well matched with the game flowing from end to end. An early goal from Ben W put Duke of Kent School ahead. Marcus D scored a second from a tight angle and then repeated the same shot after a great through ball from Ben W. Kingswood House came back into the game with a couple of good strikes but Duke of Kent School finished the match off with Freddie S poaching a goal after it bobbled around the box after a corner. The effort from all of the Duke of Kent School team was fantastic throughout. Well done to all who played.

Mr Herbert

Football: U15 B v. St. Edmund's

On Tuesday, the U15B team played a football match against St. Edmund's School. The match was evenly contested throughout with both teams playing end to end attacking football. The score finished 6-3 to Duke of Kent School, with Harry S being the stand-out player for his tireless work scoring 4 goals. Well played to everyone involved, and great work ethic during the entire match.

GCSE Drama Devising

Special mention must be made this week of the Year 11 GCSE pupils who have been working incredibly hard in preparation for their Devising Piece, which is being recorded for the exam board next week.

They have been staying late, rehearsing at break and all of this while there is also a Senior Production to put on! So well done and a big thank you to Izzy B, Amelie W-B, Charlie B, Lucy P, Lucy M, Emma M, Bea H, Ben W, Kora W, Zoe L. Iris R and Molly G.

Moby Dick The Musical

We have a couple of weeks until the Senior Production is taking place. For obvious reasons we have offered tickets to the cast first but there are some available for the Friday night and Saturday matinee, so email bookings@dokschool.org if you would like to come and see this hilarious piece of theatre.

Percussion Assembly

Paul Gunter one of our drum teachers came into assembly today to talk about his time with the Percussion show 'STOMP'. Paul toured with them all over the world before he retired from the show.

He and Mr Rye performed a couple of amusing and simple routines and then Freddie N, Dylan M and Ozzie H got involved!

Weekly Wellbeing

This week I have been contemplating one of our school values - Kindness. I have personally been witness this week to: students showing kindness by opening doors for staff who have their hands full; pupils expressing concern over their friends or even accompanying them to seek support; parents giving up their time to collect goods to support funds for the school and staff ensuring they thank the kitchen staff for their lovely lunches. I also witnessed the kindness of strangers when a lady chased after me leaving a shop with my purse which I’d inadvertently left by the till. It made me feel really grateful and reassured that there are thoughtful and kind people all around us. We should never forget that.

Tomorrow is World Kindness Day and next week is Anti Bullying Week, both of which are reminders to us to remember to be kind to others and ourselves. Acts of kindness can start a chain reaction of kindness being passed on and that can only be a positive thing. https://inspirekindness.com/world-kindness-day

It is important to remember to be kind to those that we know and also to consider how we can brighten the day of those we don’t.  https://www.randomactsofkindness.org/kindness-ideas has some great inspiration for ways to show kindness.

‘A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees.’ —Amelia Earhart.

A Message from the School Nurses

This week Mrs Sarjant has had the opportunity to attend the virtual PSHE Association Autumn Conference webinar for an update on the DfE statutory policy on RSE in particular.  PSHE is a hugely important part of our school curriculum, where we cover personal, social, health and economic education - PSHE education helps children and young people to stay safe, healthy and prepared for life's challenges and opportunities. This also encompasses Relationships and Sex Education.  To find out more about our PSHE and RSE policy and curriculum at school, please go to the policy area of the school website.

For the last two weeks in PSHE as part of our RSE program, Mrs Sarjant has been teaching year 9 pupils in single sex groups about the very important topic of contraception.  Starting with an overview of consent (with a useful video that likens sex to cups of tea - ask your year 9 child to explain!), and an understanding of the health risks of sex, we then moved onto an overview of different types of contraception - how they work, how effective they are, and which ones help prevent the transmission of STIs.  Finally, the pupils very bravely had a go at applying male condoms to models.  Well done year 9 for tackling this sensitive topic with maturity and good humour.  You have practiced some essential real-life skills.

For pupils and parents who have questions or concerns about sex, contraception, STIs etc, we would recommend the sexwise.org.uk website - lots of easy to understand information and useful links of where to find help.

Further down the school, in Prep School year 5 had an engaging lesson with Mrs Sarjant about body changes in puberty last week, and next week, year 6 will have their next puberty lesson, where we go into things in a bit more detail and learn the science of puberty for both boys and girls.

Finally back to Covid. Case numbers at school appear to have settled a little this week, which is hugely encouraging, but we continue to remain vigilant.  Senior pupils and Staff are reminded to continue with their Wednesday and Sunday evening asymptomatic lateral flow tests and reporting online at www.gov.uk.  We will no longer be sending asymptomatic testing reminders on instagram, so do set an alarm on your calendar or phone instead if it helps to have a nudge on the day itself.

have a great weekend, and don't forget to wear your remembrance poppies - Lest we forget.

New Optional Senior School Hoodie

The Senior School hoodies have been redesigned by members of the School Council and the finished product can be seen above.  They have done a fantastic job at putting this design together and now finally getting to see the finished product.

This new hoodie is available from Stevenson's on their website: https://www.stevensons.co.uk/.  There is also the option to have your child's initials printed onto the front of the hoodie for a slight additional cost, something we would advise to avoid mixing up tops with other pupils. This hoodie is not an essential item of School uniform, so there is no expectation for pupils to have it.

If you wish to see the sample, please pop into the Main Office to see me and have a look at the new hoodie.
