A Message from Mrs Knox

It has been another busy and enjoyable week, with plenty to celebrate as we near the end of this special academic year. I was delighted to unveil the ceremonial plaque marking our new school orchard, planted earlier this year to celebrate the school's 50th anniversary. The orchard is already thriving, with apple, pear, plum, cherry and even a peregrine peach tree now established - with the peach tree already bearing fruit! I hope this will become a lasting legacy for future generations of pupils to enjoy. Congratulations to our Year 11 pupils, who have now completed their GCSE exams. They have approached this important milestone with resilience, determination and maturity and we are incredibly proud of their efforts. We wish them every success and hope they have a wonderful time on their well-deserved trip to Barcelona next week. Finally, I am very much looking forward to our Summer Concert on Saturday evening. Our pupils have worked incredibly hard and I know they will deliver a memorable evening of music. It promises to be a fitting celebration of the talent and enthusiasm that makes our School such a special place. I hope to see many of you there.

Mrs Knox

Year 9 DofE Training Day

On Friday morning Year 9 embarked on their Duke of Edinburgh Practice day. They spent the first part of the day learning about First Aid including: hazards, bites, stings, allergies, bleeding, breaks and burns. Thankfully, the only aid actually required during the walks was for a blister plaster. The groups set off in staggered starts on a clockwise route of 11.5km heading west to Pitch Hill following the Greensand Way, before heading east across the Winterfold and Hurt Woods across scenery used for the filming of Jurassic Park. The steep climbs & descents do resemble the shape of a Dragon's back! All finished (eventually), with a particularly honourable mention for Lockie B who overcame previous arm AND leg injuries to complete all activities. They were all remarkably buoyant; I shall assume that was a result of the optimism provided by accompanying staff, namely Mr Wyllie, Mrs Wilkinson, Mr Watson and Mr Wilson (who was also accompanied by the Surrey DofE Operations Manager, Mr Tom McKnight).  The students also each cooked (and survived) meals using the trangia camping stoves. Well done them! Please note their Qualification expedition will take place between Fri 18th-Sat 19th Sep.

Yr 7 & 9 Forces and Space Workshop

A Stellar Session with an Astronomer

Years 7 and 9 were lucky enough to take part in an inspiring Zoom session with an astronomer from the Royal Observatory Greenwich this week. Our pupils were a credit to the school, showing great enthusiasm throughout, confidently answering questions and engaging fully with the discussion.

The session explored some fascinating aspects of space exploration, including why astronauts can develop “puffy heads” in microgravity and what life might be like for future humans living on Mars. Pupils were amazed to learn that the average temperature on Mars is a freezing -63°C, meaning any aspiring Martians will certainly need to enjoy the cold! It was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the wonders of space and the challenges of exploring beyond Earth - without even leaving the school!

ISA National Finals

Three pupils recently travelled to Birmingham to compete at the Alexander Stadium, representing London South in a highly competitive athletics event. All three performed admirably across their respective disciplines and represented the school with real commitment and determination.

Archie H delivered a strong performance in the howler event against a strong wind, achieving a distance of 28 metres.

Charlotte J successfully competed in multiple para events, recording 12.34 seconds in the 60m sprint (Gold Medal), 14.95metres (Gold Medal) in the howler throw and 1.95m in the long jump (Silver Medal).

Bea produced an excellent run in the 800m, finishing in a time of 2:36 with a very strong finish.

Well done to all three pupils, who performed excellently to qualify from the regional competition and then backed this up with outstanding performances at the national finals. Their commitment, determination, and high level of performance throughout the event were a real credit to themselves and the school.

This week's update comes from the shores of Chichester Harbour, as Year 6 start the day with a full English and search for signs of the promised heatwave through the morning mist. Year 5 are also on their residential in the New Forest, so the corridors of Prep School have been much quieter than usual this week!

Before they left, Year 5 were learning about Passover, tasting various parts of the traditional Seder meal and discovering the symbol meaning of each. Year 4 were testing which materials are good conductors or insulators of electricity in Science and Year 3 finally tracked down the sun to make different shadow shapes - great fun, and a real help for the information leaflet they've begun creating on how to stay safe in the sun. With temperatures due to soar for Sports Day on Monday, let's hope they finish their leaflets soon!

In Pre-prep, Year 1 have been looking at birds in Topic and will be making some bird feeders to hang up around the playground in the Autumn Term. Maths involved days of the week revision and creating a pictogram showing how many children in the class were born on certain days. Nursery made a rock pool and a beautiful seaside collage; Reception made spiders, learnt more water safety at swimming - specifically what to do if you fall in - and discussed how to be a 'good sport' in PSHE (ready for Sports Day!). Last but not least, Year 2 measured almost everything in the playground and continued their exciting coding projects in ICT.

Mr Wright

The exam season has now come to an end for our Year 11 pupils. We are incredibly proud of the resilience, determination and maturity they have shown throughout this demanding period. Their next adventure begins this weekend as they set off for Barcelona. We wish them a fantastic trip filled with memorable experiences, cultural discoveries and plenty of opportunities to celebrate the end of their GCSE journey.

This week, Year 10 enjoyed their residential visit to Dorset. The trip provided a valuable opportunity for pupils to challenge themselves, build friendships and create lasting memories.

There is still much to look forward to before the end of term. We are excited to see our Year 8 and Year 9 pupils take to the stage for their production of Animal Farm, and we are also looking forward to celebrating the musical talents of our pupils at the Summer Concert. Both events promise to be wonderful showcases of creativity, confidence and hard work.

As always, it is pleasing to recognise those pupils who continue to demonstrate commitment to their studies and contribute positively to school life through our merit system. Congratulations to all pupils who achieved the milestone of 25 merit points this week: Marcus B, Henry O, Alexander O, George R, Ben W

Special congratulations go to Isabel N who has exceeded 100 merit points and has earned their merit badge in recognition of their sustained effort and achievement.

Mr Wyllie

What Parents & Educators need to know about Sports Betting Online

Sports betting has become increasingly visible across apps, websites, social platforms and sports coverage, making it easier for young people to encounter gambling messages before they are old enough to take part legally. This guide explores how betting content can appear through adverts, influencers, tipsters, friends, gaming spaces and even adult accounts.

It also highlights the risks of impulsive spending, chasing losses, ‘free bet’ offers and the way gambling can become normalised around sport. With practical advice on starting calm conversations, spotting warning signs, setting safer digital boundaries and finding support, the guide helps parents and educators approach the topic with confidence.

The magician wowed us all with some amazing tricks and The Accidentals filled the dance floor.  Joyous fun and dance moves a plenty.

Thank you to all those who came to the ball and to the PADoK team who worked tirelessly to put this event together.

Senior School Optional Hoodie

The Senior School hoodies have been redesigned by members of the School Council and the finished product can be seen below. They have done a fantastic job at putting this design together and now finally getting to see the finished product.

This new hoodie is available from Stevenson's on their website: https://www.stevensons.co.uk/.  There is also the option to have your child's initials printed onto the front of the hoodie for a slight additional cost, something we would advise, to avoid mixing up tops with other pupils. This hoodie is not an essential item of School uniform, so there is no expectation for pupils to have it.

If you wish to see the sample, please pop into the Main Office and have a look.
