A message from Mr Southee

The Spring Term is now in full swing and we've had some trips out this week with great success. Year 11 Separate Scientists headed to 'Science in Action' in London on Wednesday dressed in 'Sixth Form' attire and Year 5 visited the Battle of Britain Bunker Museum. I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the sad local news of the stabbing and death of a 15-year-old in Guildford. Our Year 10s and 11s have been reminded of the support available at school if they have been affected. The loss of the life of a young person in these circumstances is devastating, and we will continue to work with local charities and partners, and internally, to ensure the safety of our community. All of our thoughts and prayers are with those affected.

Mr Southee

Zoom!

On Thursday, the Pre-prep children watched Zoom!, a super play performed by the Pied Piper Theatre Company in our Performing Arts Hall. We also welcomed all of the pupils from Peaslake School who very much enjoyed the show. The play explored the theme of Stars and Space, linking closely with the current Year 1 topic, while also incorporating wider themes of environmental awareness, friendship, and learning to let go. Mrs Henry remarked that her class had later discussed some of the “reduce, reuse, recycle” messaging in the play, showing an excellent awareness already of how they should - and can - help care for their environment. The trailer can be viewed here, and might be nice for your children to view at home and hopefully tell you more about what they learnt with the help of Molly and Lilo.

Football Fun with Dorking Wanderers FC

On Friday, we were delighted to welcome Dorking Wanderers Football Club for a fantastic football session with our Year 3 and 4 pupils. Despite the wet weather, the coaches adapted their plans brilliantly, providing four engaging activities across the morning, including dribbling, dodging, 1v1s and small-sided matches. The pupils had a wonderful time and asked some excellent questions to the visiting professional footballers! A huge thank you to Dorking Wanderers Football Club for giving up their time to inspire the next generation – we loved it!

Year 6 enjoyed heading to the Senior Science labs this week, observing Mrs Tattan-Robb demonstrate the distillation process. They've since been looking at different mixtures, considering the best process to separate them from sieving, filtering, evaporating and decanting. Year 5 were also busy in Science lessons, investigating factors that affect air resistance to design and make parachutes of varying size, shape and material.

In Year 2, the children have been learning about climates around the world and also finished their fantastic imigongos - traditional Rwandan artwork. Year 4 showed impressive dexterity and accuracy using set squares to mark out the plywood they'll be cutting with tenon saws to make their bird boxes while Year 3 have looked at how different animals are adapted to living in the rainforest, using this knowledge to design an animal that would be able to live in all layers of the forest. School Council met and fine-tuned the rules for Junior Jungle to put to the rest of Prep School for final approval. We also talked about everyone's favourite topic: food! Councillors excitedly listed their favourite meals, things they would like to see make a comeback and agreed we should conduct a survey across all Prep classes to ensure every child can have their say.

My final mention is for Siena dPL in Year 4 who has not only completed the 200 'reads' required to reach Platinum on the Reading Podium, but has surpassed it spectacularly, hitting over 350 'reads' so far this year. She was very pleased to receive the first ever 'Remarkable Reader' certificate!

Values Certificates: Effort for Marc W, Violet W, Lily C, Harry R and William C; Responsibility for Logan N

Mr Wright

The Senior School has enjoyed another energetic and engaging week, kicked off by the ever popular House Music Quiz assembly. Selected representatives from each house, put their musical knowledge to the test as they competed to secure top scores. Designed and expertly led by our very own quiz master, Mr Rye, the event was both entertaining and challenging, even for those who consider themselves music experts.

Throughout the week, house leaders and captains have been busy finalising their song selections for the much-anticipated House Music event, taking place on 6th March. With song choices determined by quiz results, the competitive spirit has been running high. House meetings were held today, giving teams their first chance to begin organising and rehearsing for what is shaping up to be a closely contested and exciting competition.

It has also been a highly successful week academically with many pupils reaching the impressive milestone of 25 Merit points. Special congratulations go to George S who has now passed the 100 Merit point mark and received his achievement badge and Harry M-C who has gone beyond 200 Merit points and has been awarded his recognition badge.

Just a reminder that next Thursday the 29th, myself and some of the Girls on Board staff will be delivering a brief introduction to the Girls on Board initiative for parents. We begin at 5pm and will be no longer than 40 minutes. It will be an opportunity to learn more about what this approach entails and to hopefully get a better understanding of girls’ group identity.

We will meet either in the PA Hall or the Meetings room (depending on numbers). Confirmation of venue will be sent out nearer the time. If you are planning on attending, please do let Helena Everill at office@dokschool.org know so we can get an idea of numbers.

I look forward to seeing those who are able to make it, then.

What Parents & Educators need to know about Roblox

Roblox is hugely popular with children, offering millions of user-created games and social experiences. This guide explains how the platform differs from traditional video games, and why its scale, self-rating system and automated moderation can expose young users to inappropriate content or unsafe interactions.

Aimed at parents and educators, the guide explores concerns including online communication, in-game spending and compulsive play. It also shares practical advice on parental controls, limiting chat and encouraging open conversations, helping adults support children to enjoy Roblox more safely and responsibly.

Please can we remind you that pupils should not carry their own medication at school in case it gets lost and falls into the hands of our younger pupils by mistake.  Any pupils who are a little under the weather and would benefit from some over the counter remedies such as paracetamol, or ibuprofen, to help them last the school day should attend the medical room during break time to see the School Nurse.  Pupils are however, encouraged to bring their own supply of tissues and throat lozenges to help manage mild cold symptoms.

Pupils attending school trips in the coming weeks are reminded to please take travel nausea medication at home before school if needed.

Senior School optional hoodie

The Senior School hoodies have been redesigned by members of the School Council and the finished product can be seen below. They have done a fantastic job at putting this design together and now finally getting to see the finished product.

This new hoodie is available from Stevenson's on their website: https://www.stevensons.co.uk/.  There is also the option to have your child's initials printed onto the front of the hoodie for a slight additional cost, something we would advise, to avoid mixing up tops with other pupils. This hoodie is not an essential item of School uniform, so there is no expectation for pupils to have it.

If you wish to see the sample, please pop into the Main Office and have a look.

At Duke of Kent School we have three social media platforms; Instagram (dukeofkentschool), Facebook (Duke of Kent School) and TikTok (DoKSchool). All of our social media accounts are public.

We recommend following all three accounts to receive push notifications with news, updates, educational articles, interactions with other schools, communities and public figures.
