A message from Mrs Knox

It was fantastic watching the pupils this week show real determination and persistence throughout their cross-country events. We had some brilliant finishes with some superb individual performances. All the pupils are to be congratulated on the way they gave their best this week. Every child earned important points for their house. Years 3 and 4 can look forward to their rescheduled event when the weather is less alarming!  Who will be the winning House this year, I wonder? Thank you to the many parents who came along and cheered the children on. Congratulations must go to our Year 11 pupils who have now concluded their week of Mock examinations. We are all very proud with how positively they approached the whole process and their attitude to how they plan to use the results to set goals for the summer exams. Have a lovely weekend.

Mrs Knox

Dementia UK Assembly

Today’s assembly focused on our school charity, Dementia UK. We learnt what dementia is, how it affects memory, communication and daily life, and how we can support people in practical, thoughtful ways. We discussed how adapting activities — such as simplifying games, giving clear instructions and keeping routines familiar — can help people with dementia feel confident, valued and included. We were proud to share that we have raised over £1,000 for Dementia UK to support the vital work of Admiral Nurses.

We also reflected on our wider charity work, including supporting K9 Rescue Ukraine on their 37th trip, and donating unused cups and saucers to Rowley’s in Cranleigh, showing how helping others can make a difference locally and beyond.

Mr Green

Fabulous teamwork has come to the fore this week across the department. Using a variety of equipment, Year 6 competed against each other in groups to see who could filter dirty water the best, whilst also retaining the highest volume of filtrate at the end. Results are pending until next week! On Thursday morning, Years 1 and 2 were challenged to construct a bridge capable of holding a vehicle for 10 seconds. Each of the four groups was given a material - lego, k'nex, paper and multi-link cubes - and the paper team were victorious! And in RS, Year 5 came together as class teams to debate whether they believe in miracles - no actual winners in this one, although everyone came out more informed and contemplative.

Elsewhere, Year 3 have been preparing the body of their linkage toys in DT ready for cutting out with coping saws next week. In their Science lessons, Year 4 have been learning about what makes sound and how it travels, Year 5 explored the difference between weight and mass, and Year 3 researched how magnets are used in everyday life (including speakers and certain trains). Some classes enjoyed international travel this week: Nursery were off to the Arctic to explore icebergs and rescue polar bears; Year 5 popped over to Rio de Janeiro, diving headfirst into the electrifying polyrhythms of samba batucada; and Year 6's Art lesson took them to Japan  to explore the philosophy of repairing damaged artwork and finding beauty in imperfection in the process. Finally, huge thanks to Jenson Bo, Max M and Henry P for sharing their enthusiasm for F1 racing with us in Assembly - well done, boys!

Mr Wright

This week has highlighted the impressive attitude of our Year 11 pupils, who have approached their mock examinations with focus, determination, and maturity. They should be extremely proud of how they have handled such a demanding and important week.

It was also wonderful to hear how our Year 9 and 10 pupils tackled the House cross-country course in what can only be described as dismal weather on Tuesday. Conditions were slightly kinder for our Year 7 and 8 pupils on Wednesday, who did their Houses proud. A huge well done to everyone involved for demonstrating such resilience and determination in challenging conditions.

Congratulations to the following pupils for reaching the impressive milestone of 25 Merit points over the course of this week:

Charlie B, Rowan B, Seren G, Henry S, Eva W, Amelia W, Lauren B, Elfie G, Bea T-R, Ben W, Jay J, Felix C.

A special mention goes to Ben R who has surpassed 200 Merit points and received their recognition badge. Even more impressively, Poppy F has exceeded 400 Merit points and has been presented with their well-deserved recognition badge. Well done to all!

Mr Wyllie

House Cross Country 2026!

The annual House Cross Country races for Years 5 to 10 were held this week and provided an excellent display of determination, resilience and school spirit. On Tuesday, very poor weather conditions resulted in a challenging and extremely muddy course for Year 9 and 10 competitors.

Despite the difficult conditions, pupils approached their races with enthusiasm and perseverance, representing their houses with pride. Years 5,6,7 and 8 students competed on Wednesday, continuing the event with strong performances and a high level of commitment across all houses. The event was a great success and highlighted wonderfully positive attitudes and cracking sportsmanship by all!

A huge thank you to the wonderful catering team for the delicious hot chocolate and cookies that all competitors enjoyed in the Dining Room away from the cold and rainy conditions! It was a lovely way to conclude both afternoons.

We are looking forward to the Year 3 & 4 House Cross Country race when the weather is finally kinder to us!

Huge congratulations to our individual winners of each race:

The Student Sustainability Committee has a question for you! How do you get to School?!

Around 50% of our carbon emissions as a School come from our commutes and we want to find out how we can cut our impact. Could you please take a moment to fill in the survey, and we will report back our findings soon!

Travel Survey

Pupils have completed the second week of the Spring term, with Year 11 finishing an intensive week of mock exams. Combined with winter weather and circulating illnesses, this time of year can feel draining. Monday 19th January is often called “Blue Monday,” but rather than expecting it to be negative, we encourage everyone to plan something enjoyable or relaxing and make it a positive day.

If you are feeling low, you’re not alone. Simple steps can help support wellbeing: connect with others, get some gentle exercise, limit negative media, set small achievable goals, and be kind to yourself.

You will also have received a letter inviting you to a short presentation on the Girls on Board initiative being introduced this year. Please confirm attendance by emailing office@dokschool.org.

What Parents & Educators need to know about Digital Devices and Wellbeing

Digital devices are woven into everyday life for children and young people, but balancing the benefits with potential risks can feel challenging. This guide explores how screen use can influence sleep, emotional regulation, physical health and online experiences, offering clear context around why concerns about wellbeing are growing.

Written with schools and families in mind, the guide shares practical, realistic advice for setting boundaries, encouraging open conversations and building digital literacy. With insights from an experienced mental health professional, it supports adults to help children develop healthier, more mindful relationships with technology.

Parents of Year 8 pupils should have received an email regarding the HPV immunisation on March 6th. Please check junk mail if you haven’t seen it. Consent must be completed online for your child to receive the vaccination.

Years 5 and 6 pupils will have an upcoming PSHE lesson on puberty with Mrs Sarjant (Year 6 on Thursday 22nd January, Year 5 on Thursday 29th January). Please encourage discussion at home and ask pupils to post any questions for Matron on Google Classroom before their lesson.

Illness is currently circulating, including coughs, colds, sore throats and headaches. Please ensure pupils bring tissues, water and throat lozenges if attending school while mildly unwell. Pupils with a temperature of 37.8°C or higher should remain at home, as should those with vomiting or diarrhoea for 48 hours after symptoms stop. Pupils should only visit the Medical Room during break times unless there is an urgent need.

With several school trips taking place this term, please ensure travel sickness medication (if required) is taken at home before school. If a return dose is needed, please contact Mrs Sarjant (csarjant@dokschool.org).

Senior School optional hoodie

The Senior School hoodies have been redesigned by members of the School Council and the finished product can be seen below. They have done a fantastic job at putting this design together and now finally getting to see the finished product.

This new hoodie is available from Stevenson's on their website: https://www.stevensons.co.uk/.  There is also the option to have your child's initials printed onto the front of the hoodie for a slight additional cost, something we would advise, to avoid mixing up tops with other pupils. This hoodie is not an essential item of School uniform, so there is no expectation for pupils to have it.

If you wish to see the sample, please pop into the Main Office and have a look.
