A message from Mrs Knox

It has been a fabulous start to the new term, with plenty happening in and around the School, enhanced by a few flurries of snow that brought much excitement. As we continue to celebrate our 50th Anniversary year, I spoke to the pupils about the School Orchard we will be planting this term. Each year group will choose a fruit tree to plant and nurture, and in time harvest, providing fresh fruit for us to enjoy and use in our kitchens. The Prep School pupils asked if they could plant a cacao tree – much as I would love to agree, the British climate makes this rather unlikely! We also have a new 50th Anniversary flag, which we will proudly fly throughout the course of the year.

Year 11 began their Mock GCSE examinations today and are to be congratulated on the calm manner in which they approached this important milestone. These assessments are invaluable preparation for the months ahead, and I am grateful to staff and families for the support they continue to give our pupils. Have a lovely weekend.

Careers Assembly

We were thrilled to welcome Doug Branson to join us this morning to talk about his career in finance. From gaining a degree in European Philosophy and Literature, Doug took an unlikely path into the financial sector where he began filing share certificates before progressing into his current role as Head of Business Development. Doug has worked across six firms in his career spanning 27 years and spoke with great honesty and compassion about the challenges, highs and skills learnt along the way. Doug’s career path provoked plenty of interest and, as Doug said, we continue to implore the pupils to be inquisitive and ask questions as they start to form ideas about their own career paths. Thank you so much again Doug, it was a brilliant end to a fantastic first week back!

Mr Wilson

In assembly this week, I asked Prep pupils if they had made any agreements with their parents about the earliest time they would be allowed to get up on Christmas morning, and about half of them said they had. Of those, about 50% confidently said they had honoured the deal, so I do hope that's a fair reflection of their 'compliance'. They seemed happy when I told them this automatically qualified them to be on the 'good' list for next year!

The perfect antidote to removing all the festive decorations from classrooms is to get the children back in - bringing their own life and colour to the department. Year 6 took their learning into the corridor in History, gasping in astonishment at the length of the Bayeux Tapestry - all 70m, from the Pre-prep entrance, right out the other side of the building to the Senior decking!

In Topic, Year 3 have been using atlases to identify and locate the world's major rainforests, whilst Year 4 were fascinated by the Ancient Egyptians' process of mummification - something they'll be (partially) practising on each other next week! Inspired by the snowy flurries, Reception have been learning lots of facts about polar regions and Year 2 have been considering typical weather in each season as part of their new 'Home and Away' topic. Year 5 have finished writing their biographies in English, Year 2 showed fantastic strategic thinking and focus in their adding and subtracting of 9 and 11 and Year 1 have begun comparing materials in Science. Lastly, all Prep pupils have been studying the tradition of 'la galette des rois' in French lessons this week. Bon weekend!

Mr Wright

What a joyful start to the Spring Term it has been! The School has been buzzing with energy as teaching and learning resumed in full swing on Tuesday. During our first assembly of the year, pupils were reminded of the exciting celebrations planned for this year as the School marks its 50th anniversary. We also reflected on the important value of kindness, so strongly associated with Christmas, and discussed how kindness is not just for Christmas but should be shown all year round. As we begin the term, we are placing a strong focus on random acts of kindness and working to create a positive ripple effect throughout the Senior School.

Year 11 pupils have spent the past few days diligently preparing for their mock examinations, which began today. We wish them every success as they navigate the week ahead and demonstrate the hard work they have put into their revision.

This week also provided an opportunity to celebrate the dedication and perseverance shown by our pupils over the Autumn Term and beyond, with a significant number achieving the impressive milestone of earning 25 merit points.

A special mention goes to Noah J and George S who have surpassed 100 Merit points and have receive their recognition badges, to Archie B and Issy F who have gained 200 Merit points and gained their badges and to Patrick W who has gained 300 Merit points and received his badge.

Mr Wyllie

A warm (if not slightly chilly) welcome back to school to all our pupils and families. A new term and new year offers an opportunity to act on our time of reflection over the Christmas break. It’s also important not to feel pressured into making changes if these in themselves become an added pressure. It is ok to acknowledge what is not serving us and phase those behaviours out or accept that we will at some point. Knowledge of self is the key; the decision to make changes lies with us and nobody else. That is why taking time to sit with our feelings and consider what it is we need, is so important.

‘Shoulds’ and ‘musts’ are quite self-punishing so we are better to consider purposeful aims rather than absolutes if we do want to make changes in our behaviour or lifestyle. Making quiet time focused on our self and our wellbeing is always time well spent - punishing ourselves for unkept resolutions is probably not. So be kind to your self and allow space for restoration and replenishment.

This article offers some interesting insight into mental health and new year resolutions, if you want to consider more.

What Parents & Educators need to know about Online Safety

This week offers clear, supportive guidance to help parents and educators feel more confident in navigating the online world with children and young people. It looks at how everyday conversations, simple boundaries, and a bit of digital awareness can make a real difference to young people’s online experiences.

This guide also explores how parents and educators can create an environment where children feel comfortable asking for help when something online unsettles them. By highlighting the importance of safe and healthy internet usage, these tips provide a grounded starting point for anyone supporting young people’s digital lives.

Please can we remind all pupils with prescribed inhalers to carry a named inhaler on their person at school at all times (especially important in the cold weather and for the cross country events coming up).

A reminder that Year 9 pupils have their DTP and MenAWCY immunisations coming up on Friday 23rd January.  We are still waiting for some E consents to be completed; please can these be submitted as soon as possible (see email sent 17th November with full details).   Also, please note, pupils who will be absent at the ISA football event in Nottingham on the 23rd, will have their immunisations at our catch up session Friday 26th June instead.

Please can outstanding Senior Choir Trip medical forms be submitted as soon as possible - still many outstanding.  See the email sent 10th December with full details.

A reminder to please use the absences@dokschool.org email by 08.20am if your child is absent from school so we can have accurate registers in the event of an emergency.

Finally, best of luck to Year 11 pupils starting their mock exams today.  Please contact nurse@dokschool.org if your child is struggling with ill health so we can plan on how best to support them through the exams.

We have chosen a new book “Before the coffee gets cold” by Toshikazu Kawaguch  Before the Coffee Gets Cold is a 2015 novel by Toshikazu Kawaguchi. It tells the story of a café in Tokyo that allows its customers to travel back in time, as long as they return before their coffee gets cold.

What a festive treat we had by the fire in Old Hall when we met on 9th December to discuss The Christmas Book Shop by Jenny Colgan.  Lots of chat, cinnamon pastry, chocolate, mince pies and all washed down with mulled wine.

Senior School optional hoodie

The Senior School hoodies have been redesigned by members of the School Council and the finished product can be seen below. They have done a fantastic job at putting this design together and now finally getting to see the finished product.

This new hoodie is available from Stevenson's on their website: https://www.stevensons.co.uk/.  There is also the option to have your child's initials printed onto the front of the hoodie for a slight additional cost, something we would advise, to avoid mixing up tops with other pupils. This hoodie is not an essential item of School uniform, so there is no expectation for pupils to have it.

If you wish to see the sample, please pop into the Main Office and have a look.
