A message from Mrs Knox

I am sure you can imagine the excitement when it started snowing on Wednesday! It coincided perfectly with morning breaktime and the children had a wonderful time playing in the snow. The colder weather has brought a few of the older pupils inside at lunchtime and I thoroughly enjoyed playing scrabble with some girls this week. Scrabble is an excellent game for friendly competition and plenty of “aha!” moments. Their enthusiasm and joy have been a lovely reminder of how magical this time of year can be. I am really excited for our musical "Made in Dagenham" next week. I am sure it will be a fantastic celebration of the talent and hard work our pupils have poured into every rehearsal. Enjoy the rest of the bulletin filled with lots of informative news and have a lovely weekend.

Medieval Day in Year 1

We began our exciting Medieval Day by creating traditional medieval-style artwork using mosaics. The children found this activity challenging at first, but they were absolutely delighted when they achieved their final designs.

Later in the day, we welcomed a special visitor, Mr Lodge, a senior school teacher, who came to teach us about the Battle of Hastings. The children headed out to the playground armed with their swords and bows and arrows, ready to re-enact the historic battle. In their two teams — Team Harold and Team William — they fought bravely, with the battle ending in true historical fashion: Harold (played brilliantly by Rory) falling with an arrow in his eye.

The children looked magnificent in their costumes and thoroughly enjoyed learning a new craft as well as exploring this important moment in history. A huge thank-you to Mr Lodge for bringing history to life for our Year 1 pupils!

History Presentations for Year 7

Year 7 threw themselves into history by creating their own versions of Martin Luther’s 95 Theses. Pupils aged their parchment, added wonderfully ‘authentic’ wax seals, and produced work that looks ready to be nailed to a church door! These will be proudly displayed for all to enjoy.

Ahead of our School Council meeting this week, Prep Councillors were asked to canvass their peers about what the rules of Junior Jungle are, or should be. Once agreed, we can post these in the Prep corridor. We have so far collated all of the suggestions and will soon publish a draft for everyone's final approval. Someone's suggestion that "it has to snow every day" be included was certainly optimistic, but even we can't guarantee such things! Speaking of snow, the children have been reminded to be fully equipped with their school coat, waterproofs and wellies every day - your help ensuring this is much appreciated. Hats and gloves (named, of course!) are also highly recommended now the temperature has dropped.

In Assembly, Prep pupils were encouraged to assist the Year 5s - who have been designing and making bridges in DT - with their crowdfunding efforts, to ensure their projects can remain solvent enough to continue! Each company's poster was displayed, and Years 3, 4 and 6 then decided where to invest their 'money'. The Year 5s were looking notably anxious to know the results, with some of them down to their last fiver!

In RS, Year 5 studied the story of 'Naomi and Ruth' identifying the overarching message as one of friendship, whilst Year 4 began designing rangoli as part of our focus on Diwali. Year 4 were also getting creative in their Topic lessons, making a model of an Egyptian agricultural device called a shaduf. The DT workshop has played host to much testing of solar torches (Year 4), and Year 3 put the finishing touches to their fidget mazes. The creative work has been equally fun in Pre-prep, with Reception making some delightful gift tags and decorations.

Lastly, thank you to those who were able to attend our PSHE Forum and Window into Learning this morning. We had a fantastic turnout, and hope these events were enjoyable and enlightening. We will be sending out follow-up communications on each early next week.

Winter truly made its presence known this week as we saw our first light snowfall, always a delightful sight. The pupils certainly enjoyed the moment, managing to squeeze in a few snowball throws during Wednesday’s morning break before the snow disappeared.

Our senior pupils have also been deeply involved in preparations for the upcoming Senior School production of Made in Dagenham. We wish them every success as they enter the final stages of rehearsal for next week’s shows. I am so excited to watch their commitment pay off on stage. I am sure it will be a memorable performance.

This week has also highlighted the hard work and persistence of many of our pupils, several of whom have now achieved the impressive milestone of earning 25 Merit points.
Warm congratulations to:

Freddie A-F, Casey J, Michael M-B, Akash M, Mia P, Ben G, Jenson P, Alessandro S, Willow D, Penny N, Iona H.

A special mention goes to Alice B who has surpassed 300 Merit points and received her recognition badge!

Well done to all of the Senior School runners who took part in the District Trials at Charterhouse School last Thursday. The weather was fantastic and the pupils, although a little nervous, were determined to give their best. Every runner performed to the best of their ability and all came off of the course suitably exhausted!! Well done to all who took part and particularly well done to Ollie K for winning the gold medal for being the fastest Yr 10/11 runner from Waverley. We are now waiting to see how many runners have qualified for the Surrey Schools Championships after Christmas.

Mr Herbert

This Monday, we welcomed Andrew Hampton from ‘Girls on Board’, as well as delegates from over 10 schools, to lead us in training and discussion of strategies aimed at empowering girls to take responsibility for resolving their own conflicts and the importance of having functioning friendships.

Andrew led a session with our Year 7,8 and 9 girls giving them the opportunity to voice their own concerns and views on what makes things worse. The girls seemed fully engaged with the topics and role plays; they were certainly left considering some of the questions posed by the workshop. We will be introducing this topic to some of our older and younger girls as well as to parents in the Spring Term.

We will also be exploring his brand new intervention strategy ‘Working with Boys’, in consideration of whether this would work within our community at Duke of Kent School.

Next Thursday lunchtime, I will once again be inviting pupils who have been bereaved, to create a memory bauble to adorn the school tree which will be decorated on the 1st of December. This is an opportunity for them to reflect on somebody or a pet that has died in order to maintain a bond with that person at Christmas. A focus for their memories of that person and a recognition of their grief at that person’s loss. In grief therapy, maintaining bonds, such as opportunities to reflect upon memories of a person who has died, is important in a changed relationship where a connection to that person can be reassuring and help with feelings of loss.

We will be meeting in the Art Room on Thursday 27th of November from 12:30-1:15 for those who would like to join us. Pupils will be able to collect their bauble from the tree on the last day of term and take home for their own tree.

What Parents & Educators need to know about AI-Generated Videos

AI can now generate realistic looking videos that are almost impossible to distinguish from genuine content. From hoax news to abusive deepfakes, these synthetic clips can mislead, manipulate and even harm. As AI tools become more advanced, and more accessible, young people are increasingly at risk of encountering fake but convincing footage online.
This guide unpacks the dangers of AI-generated videos, from the emotional impact of fake distressing content to the potential for impersonation and bullying. With practical tips to help young users spot deepfakes and navigate online spaces with confidence, this guide is an essential read for parents and educators navigating this rapidly evolving digital landscape.

With the more arctic temperatures arriving this week, please ensure your children attend school suitably prepared with a warm coat, hat, gloves, boots and skins/base layers for sports.

Year 9 parents please check for an email sent on Monday 17th November regarding immunisations coming up in January (DTP and MenACWY). E consents need to be submitted for all Year 9 pupils.  Thank you (you have plenty of time!).

This week we are experiencing an increase in pupils with symptoms of diarrhoea and/or vomiting, especially in the lower years.  Please can pupils stay at home for 48 hours after the last episode of either vomiting or diarrhoea in accordance with UKHSA guidance for infection control purposes.

Finally, a reminder for pupils in Senior Production to have a quiet/restful day on Friday evening/Saturday if at all possible, before the busy week ahead (starting with the Made in Dagenham all day rehearsal on Sunday 23rd November).  Parents of pupils in the production who are not feeling well during the next week, please contact Mrs Sarjant to discuss their care needs (csarjant@dokschool.org).

Have a lovely weekend!

Senior School optional hoodie

The Senior School hoodies have been redesigned by members of the School Council and the finished product can be seen below. They have done a fantastic job at putting this design together and now finally getting to see the finished product.

This new hoodie is available from Stevenson's on their website: https://www.stevensons.co.uk/.  There is also the option to have your child's initials printed onto the front of the hoodie for a slight additional cost, something we would advise, to avoid mixing up tops with other pupils. This hoodie is not an essential item of School uniform, so there is no expectation for pupils to have it.

If you wish to see the sample, please pop into the Main Office and have a look.
