A message from Mr Southee

Four weeks into the term and the school is hitting its stride in the beautiful autumnal sunshine. I take my hat off to the children and staff for creating such a wonderful start to the academic year so far! This week it has been marvellous seeing the school flourish with excellent wins on the football pitch, trips out and celebrating European Day of Languages today. This whole school event, where we all come together in our bright, flag themed clothes and greet each other in other languages, is a prime example of the cohesive and exciting community at Duke of Kent School! We are looking forward to exhibiting this to our visitors at Open Morning tomorrow.

Mr Southee

European Day of Languages

European Day of Languages was a colourful and lively event, starting with pupils and staff wearing mufti to school, dressed in the colours of a country's flag. The corridors were alive with the sound of members of the school community greeting each other in the language spoken in their country of choice. The day's events then kicked off with an assembly during which we learnt how to say, "hello" in many languages, taught by our bilinguals, and discussed the relevance of this year's theme: "Open hearts, open minds". Pupils enjoyed food tastings in their MFL lessons, learning how to fold a croissant correctly and how dulce de leche was accidently invented! Year 11 did a great job of reading some Spanish story books to Pre-prep, who were an enthusiastic and engaged audience. At morning break, we were full of gratitude to Grisha's mum who gave a Ukrainian language workshop; we will now be able to greet and welcome any Ukrainian people we may encounter. Our languages prefect, Iona, led some fun activities for Senior pupils at morning break and we all tucked into a delicious themed lunch. We are already looking forward to European Day of Languages 2026!

Duke of Edinburgh Award

In (thankfully) dry conditions Year 10 embarked on their DofE Bronze Qualification Expedition. Travelling in unaccompanied groups they had to navigate themselves from St Martha's Hill (Chilworth) to Shamley Green on the first day, and a circuitous route around Holmbury Hill on the second day.

I am delighted to say they all did exactly that - most unusually Mr Wyllie did not receive any SOS calls at all! They successfully negotiated checkpoints manned by Mrs Punter, Mr Allen and Mrs Knox. They survived their own curious yet original choices of meals cooked on the School trangia cookers, carefully observed by both Mr and Mrs Knox who, I am sure, learned all manner of new culinary 'designs'. They managed to put up the tents (that stayed up) and survived the Autumnal night. Well done to all concerned – now they should all try and complete the remainder of their Bronze DofE Awards and contemplate whether to attempt the Silver version.

Year 5 Social Evening

Last Friday evening, Year 5 gathered for their Autumn social, buzzing with excitement for an evening of fun and games. Pupils kicked things off with a lively round of 40–40 before moving into an energetic game of Capture the Flag, where teamwork, tactics and plenty of running made for a thrilling contest. The much anticipated doughnut challenge followed, with much laughter as pupils tried to eat their treat dangling from a string without using their hands!

After a short refuelling at dinner, the pupils headed up to the teaching block for a final game of Hide and Seek. Pupils squeezed themselves into all sorts of clever hiding places, with many remaining undiscovered until the very end. Thank you Year 5 for such a brilliant evening—we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

Year 2 Visit To Brighton Sea Life Center

On Thursday, Year 2 excitedly ran down the hill, ready to hop on the bus to Brighton’s Sea Life Centre. The sun was shining, and the children’s excitement set the tone for a wonderful day ahead.

We arrived just in time to watch Lulu and Gulliver - the resident Green Turtles - and Antiopi the Loggerhead enjoy their breakfast of leeks, broccoli and red cabbage. The children listened intently, wide-eyed as they learned fascinating facts about the turtles and their ocean friends. Did you know that turtles can hold their breath for up to eight hours?

As we explored the aquarium, the children were full of awe and wonder. They loved spotting the tiniest fish darting through the water and were amazed to see the blacktip reef sharks gliding overhead. The children were especially surprised to learn how much rubbish can harm marine life, and many decided to do their bit to help. In fact, they even collected a few pieces of litter from the beach as part of Beach Clean Week!

After our underwater adventure, we headed to the beach to enjoy lunch in the sunshine. But just as we settled down, a cheeky flock of seagulls decided to join the feast! Sandwiches were snatched, crisps disappeared and in the middle of the excitement, one particularly bold seagull landed right on William’s head. Big thanks to Miss I who was a fabulous ‘seagull scarer’ whilst the children finished their lunches!

To finish off our trip, we enjoyed yummy ice creams in the glorious sunshine. It was a wonderful day filled with discovery, laughter and unforgettable memories.

This week, Year 2 spent their Science lesson comparing photos of themselves as babies with how they look now, learning about features of human growth and development. They enjoyed trying to identify their classmates, but especially successfully spotting which ones were Miss Munro and Mrs Plumbridge! Reception, also, have been making comparisons - measuring height, length, mass and capacity of various items to further their mathematical skills.

In the Music Room, Year 3 had great fun singing 'reet petite' and playing along on keyboards as a whole ensemble, and in their Topic lessons they used their knowledge of Ancient Greek Gods and Goddesses to write 'Guess Who' clues. In Art, Year 6 finished off their designs for East African masks, ready for working them up in clay next week. They were also creating online profiles in French and learning about rules of divisibility and index notation in Maths.

Bobby C for working independently in Maths and generating lots of number sentences.

Year 2: Paul E for spreading joy wherever he goes. His kindness and enthusiasm is such a gift!

Edie B for her wonderful curiosity towards all the different sea creatures on our trip.

Mr Wright

This week has been especially busy for the senior school, with lots of activity going on and in particular our celebration of languages today for European Day of languages. Pupils enjoyed an inspiring assembly this morning and a delicious themed lunch.

Today, Year 8 had their trip to Strawberry Hill House for Gothic inspiration, a consistently popular outing that provides great ideas for the work they are focusing on in class.

On Tuesday morning it was wonderful to hold our first student council meeting and hear all of the many suggestions and feedback that the pupils wanted to share. It really is a pleasure to hear them talk about the school and come up with imaginative ways to improve situations.

Finally big congratulations to the following students who have achieved milestones of 25 Merit Points! They joined today for Celebration Snack Break, where they were awarded a lunch fast pass and a special stationery prize.

Halle S, Leo B, Alessandro S, Poppy F, Amber M, Edith S, Jasper T, Iona H.

A special congratulations to Freddie G for exceeding 100 Merit Points and receiving his recognition badge, and to Henry W and Tildy C for surpassing 200 Merit Points and earning their recognition badges!

Mr Wyllie

Huge congratulations to Herb M in Year 7 for a spectacular result in his Grade 8 Drum exam. Herb achieved an incredible 99/100 distinction mark. A wonderful achievement in its own right but even more impressive considering he is only in Year 7 and currently part of the cast of Oliver in the West End. Well done Herb!

Plaudits are also due to Henry R in Year 11 who, when he’s not busy playing Harold Wilson in our School production of Made in Dagenham, he also attends the British Theatre Academy where he is currently rehearsing for Cats. The BTA have invited him to attend their Professional Training Programme, an invite only course for those young performers who show serious promise. Well done Henry - a real achievement!

Mr Rye

This week and over the next couple of weeks, I am endeavouring to meet and talk to all our new pupils, whether that be individually or as part of a group.

The new senior pupils who have joined outside of the Year 7 cohort have had an introduction to the Wellbeing room and myself to check in and see how they are settling in. It has also been a good opportunity for me to let them know about the services that are offered to them via Wellbeing.

Happily, there seems to have been a really positive response to their experiences so far and a sense that they have felt welcomed and accepted. This is so important for them in their developing of a successful relationship with school and a feeling that they are part of the community.

It’s also important for them (and all the pupils) to recognise that there is a safe, quiet and calm space within school where they can seek solace when things are feeling more difficult.

As a reminder to parents and something to pass on to your children, Open Door times are:

Monday - 1st break and lunchtime and Thursday - 1st break and lunchtime.

They are of course free to drop by at any point that I am not in a session with another pupil and enjoy the confidential, non judgmental space that the Wellbeing Room offers.

Top Tips for Setting Boundaries around Gaming

Behind video-sharing platforms (like YouTube) and streaming TV shows and movies, gaming is the third most popular online activity for children in the UK. In fact, according to recent data from Ofcom, an overwhelming 89% of children aged 3 to 17 play video games. Of those, more than one in five (22%) talk to other players online who they don’t know outside the game.

The risk of contact from strangers is just one of the reasons that many parents are concerned about their child’s gaming: increased screen time, inappropriate content and in-game spending also figure among the most frequent fears. Agreeing on some rules around your child’s gaming activities can certainly help, and our guide has some useful tips for establishing these boundaries.

A huge thank you to all our parents for bearing with last minute changes for pick up this Wednesday.  We were assisting with a medical emergency (a member of the public) which necessitated having an ambulance on site, and we therefore needed to redirect traffic.  Thankfully, the casualty is now fully recovered, so it's a good news story, and we really appreciate your understanding.

Back to more every day matters... We still have a few outstanding responses for the Flu Immunisations at school on Friday 17th October; available for all pupils with parental consent (apart from those in Nursery).  You still have plenty of time; the portal closes on Monday 13th October.  See the email sent 10th September for more information.

Senior School optional hoodie

The Senior School hoodies have been redesigned by members of the School Council and the finished product can be seen below. They have done a fantastic job at putting this design together and now finally getting to see the finished product.

This new hoodie is available from Stevenson's on their website: https://www.stevensons.co.uk/.  There is also the option to have your child's initials printed onto the front of the hoodie for a slight additional cost, something we would advise, to avoid mixing up tops with other pupils. This hoodie is not an essential item of School uniform, so there is no expectation for pupils to have it.

If you wish to see the sample, please pop into the Main Office and have a look.
