A message from Mr Southee

We have been acknowledging Mental Health Awareness Week this week with a range of activities and talks. It was so lovely to see lots of Prep School pupils making flower arrangements at break, Pre-prep creating their community hive and Years 9 and 10 having an inspirational talk and breathing workshop with Joe Bates from Halen. With exams already starting for Year 11 and Year 10 on Friday, with the rest of the School following next week, it is good time to consider 'balance' in our lives. Yes, it is important to revise and be prepared for the exams, but just as important is taking the time to exercise, socialise and rest. This weekend, take a minute to stop, do something nice for yourself and...breathe.

Outdoor Learning Week

Last week, the School held its first Outdoor Learning Week to mark Outdoor Classroom Day. The teaching staff were challenged to take as many lessons as they could outside their classrooms. Evidence shows that utilising the outdoor environment to vary our usual teaching methods can create more dynamic and engaging learning experiences while fostering the benefits to personal development and wellbeing linked with being outside.

Nursery did observational paintings of daffodils while Reception hunted for patterns and 3D shapes in the School grounds. In the Prep School, Year 4 used the Burrow for inspiration to write creative story starters. Year 6 also used the Burrow to influence the haikus they were writing. One of the Year 6 maths groups used leaves to create a number line to show the equivalence between fractions, percentages and decimals. Year 3 used the outdoors in their maths lessons to learn more about fractions, and used the garden to draw and label plants during a science lesson. During Year 5’s music lesson, they used the athletics track as a musical stave!

Meanwhile, in the Senior School, the Burrow was used for numerous lessons, like Year 8 filming news reports and Year 7 writing descriptions linked to the five senses. Years 9 and 10 decided to do their design work on the bank during their DT lessons, and Year 10 also acted out a journey using a distance-time graph on the forum in their physics lesson.

These are just a few of the captivating lessons taught during, not just Outdoor Learning Week, but this term. The staff body has delivered 50 lessons outside the classroom so far this term, compared to 22 in the whole Summer Term last year! This is a testament to how much the teachers have embraced the outdoors and the School’s growing expertise. Well done to all the teachers and pupils for making the most of the opportunities presented to them.

Mr Gritton

Goodnight Mister Tom

Come along and support Duke of Kent School pupils Jenson P (Year 8), Florence A (Year 6) and Henry A (Year 4) who are all starring in the Ewhurst Players production of Goodnight Mister Tom during half term. Break a leg – we can’t wait to see it!

For their Community badge projects for Endeavour, Year 5 have been designing and preparing activities for Pre-prep and Prep pupils, and this week they ran the events with considerable enthusiasm, organisation and responsibility. Well done, Year 5! They have also been busy in the DT workshop, starting to make their chosen joint for their bookends. In Science, Year 4 have been looking at food chains for different habitats and played a game of the excellently named 'nibblers and nobblers' (I think, representing herbivores and carnivores!) to illustrate how they work. Not to be outdone, Year 3 made tally charts in Maths, recording various types of tree and then used the data to learn more about pictograms and bar charts.

In assembly this week, we heard all about the amazing Victorians from Year 4 - complete with costumes and accents (not to mention dramatic flair!). Reception found time for a trip to a local farm where they pond dipped, amongst other things, and Year 4 went on a nature walk - all of which you can read about in separate articles in this Bulletin. We also enjoyed welcoming Pre-prep parents to observe an Open Swim - we hope you found it interesting, and plan to now run these termly.

With the departure of the Year 11s on their GCSE study leave, we wondered who would help accompany Pre-prep pupils up to classes from Old Hall each morning, but we needn't have worried - the Year 10s have eagerly picked up the baton, and are already firm favourites with the youngest members of the school. Thank you, Year 10! One of the most exciting moments for our pupils is when they bring together learning in different subjects, and deepen their understanding by making links across the various threads of the curriculum. Year 2 did just that this week, completing their work in Science on materials in their History lesson; tasked with making replicas of houses at the time of the Great Fire of London (from plastic, clay, play do, wood and paper), they were able to consider the relative strengths of each material, and apply it to their understanding of the materials available to Londoners in the 1600s.

Next week, we have exams in the Prep School, and we wish everyone the very best. Pre-prep have a whole department outing to Bocketts Farm on Wednesday and Year 1 and 2 parents are also invited to a Tour of the Prep School on Friday, so much still to look forward to.

Reading Certificates: Charlie Sw (Silver), Finn H and Layla B (Gold), Harry S, Charlotte P and William C (Platinum)

Values Certificates: Oliver T, Layla B, Felix Bl, Arthur M, Daisy W, Norah C and Siena dPL for Effort; Izzy W and Tildy T for Responsibility; Annabelle Sunshine T, Annabelle W and William C for Kindness

Martha S for being such a supportive friend to her peers, you are always there to help others!

Year 1: Oscar B for consistently showing empathy to others.

Year 2: Aoife F for demonstrating great problem solving skills and team work when constructing our ‘houses’.

Eliza H for your consistently positive attitude to all areas of your learning and demonstrating such kindness towards your peers and the teachers too!

Mr Wright

Year 11 are now well underway with their GCSE exams and have conducted themselves brilliantly throughout their first big week. Naturally, there have been a few nerves along the way, but they should be incredibly proud of themselves. It is clear they have prepared thoroughly, with pupils revising and testing each other right up to the last moment.

For the rest of the Senior School, the week began with an assembly led by Mrs Douglass to mark Mental Health Awareness Week, a timely reminder about looking after ourselves before and during exam season.

Year 9 and Year 10 pupils also benefitted from a wonderful breathing workshop kindly delivered by Joe Bates, alongside an important discussion with the boys exploring the topic of masculinity, a subject which has featured prominently in recent news.

Year 10 began their summer exams today and made a positive start, with three major papers already completed. We wish all Senior School pupils the very best of luck as exams continue next week. Make sure to use the weekend to squeeze in some final revision, but equally, take time to rest and recharge ahead of what promises to be a busy week.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge those pupils who continue to work hard towards their merit totals, with a special mention for those recognised this week for their achievements, including several who have now reached the impressive milestone of 25 merit points:

Lauren B, Lola C, Indie K, Jordan V, Annie B, Tildy C, Chester S, Rhys W.

A special mention goes to Ben W and Wolf R who have surpassed 100 merit points and were awarded their well deserved badges.

House Music Finalists Concert

Last Friday we held our House Music Finalists Concert showcase - a chance for the parents of those involved in last term's finals to come and enjoy their children's performances.

It was a wonderful celebration of some of the musicians in the school, with performances from Years 5–11 on display, solos, duets and trios all performing to a wonderful standard and a truly eclectic mix on display. Huge congratulations to all involved.

House Drama

House Drama is now live! Mrs Honey has set up a Google Classroom and invited those who are likely to be interested to it. If you are keen to enter and you are not invited please let Mrs Honey know asap. The finals will be held in the PA Hall on Tuesday 10th June - please watch this space to find out who our judge will be!

Grub and Groove – Monday 26th May – midday

If you have a few hours spare on Monday 26th May then please come down to Knowle Park in Cranleigh. They are holding a 'Grub and Groove' event and a bunch of our Senior singers and musicians will be performing there in the afternoon. From midday, Miss Barnes' mini-choir will perform a half-hour set, followed by our Year 10 GCSE musos performing various ensembles and solo numbers. Also performing will be The Sham, the band made up of ex-pupils and our current Year 11 drumming star Charlie H. It would be wonderful to see some friendly faces in the crowd and it promises to be a lovely family event.

The organisers have teamed up with Moooh! Ice Cream and Heartwork Coffee to bring you a fantastic day out in the beautiful surroundings of Knowle Park. According to their website...

“…expect to taste delicious dishes from local artisans and culinary professionals. Watch them show off their skills in live cooking demos and learn a few tips to try at home. We’ll also have live music from talented local musicians to keep you entertained throughout the event. This is a free, family-friendly celebration, and everyone’s welcome.”

Jazz Night Cancellation

Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, the Jazz Night that was due to take place on 16th May has been cancelled. I know there were plenty of people looking forward to this wonderful evening, but sadly there is nothing we can do. There will definitely be an evening taking place in the new academic year, so rest assured the DoK School Jazz Club will happen again!

What Parents & Educators Need to Know about Minecraft

With its limitless opportunities for building, exploring and collaborating, Minecraft remains a global gaming phenomenon. Its broad appeal lies in how open-ended it is - but this also means it’s not without risk. From chatting with strangers on public servers to the grief of having a beloved creation destroyed, young players can face challenges if left unsupervised. Minecraft can also become a time sink for enthusiastic players, with late nights spent crafting and constructing, potentially impacting school and social lives.

We’ve created this guide to help parents and educators understand how to keep young gamers safe - from choosing age-appropriate game modes to setting boundaries around screen time and spending.

Click the link to learn more about "Minecraft".

***Also, Internet Matters is a great website that can help you deal with online issues, give you advice for different age groups, and give you step-by-step guides for setting controls for various devices.***

Ill health continues to circulate amongst some pupils across all areas of the School; fevers, headaches, abdominal pain, and tummy bugs.  A reminder that pupils should stay at home if they have a temperature of 37.8 or higher, or have had either vomiting or diarrhoea in the last 48 hours.  For Year 11 pupils in GCSE exams, please contact us to discuss arrangements if your child is unwell on exam day.  Use nurse@dokschool.org and cc Mr Wyllie awyllie@dokschool.org.

Please can we remind you that pupils are not to carry their own medication at School unless with prior authorisation with the School Nurses.  We have a plentiful supply of paracetamol, ibuprofen and antihistamines at School, so there is no need for children to bring their own.

Hayfever continues to be challenging for many pupils.  Please give antihistamines to your child before School if they are getting symptoms, to prevent histamine build up and worsening symptoms at School.

Also, a reminder to keep an eye out for uninvited passengers; ticks and head lice!

Wishing Prep and Senior School pupils all the best for the exams next week.  Happy revising (but do allow yourself some rest breaks too!).

The School Nurses

This week we have been celebrating Mental Health Awareness Week and the theme of 'community'. Pupils had an assembly focusing on the importance of connection and community and exploring some of the external communities pupils belong to following the community audit they completed last week. It was so lovely for pupils to be able to recognise the significance of the clubs and communities they belong to, to their sense of belonging and connection to others.

We noticed that sports clubs and teams are the most frequented, closely followed by drama and music performance clubs. It was so lovely to hear about some of the contributions some pupils voluntarily make to their wider community such as helping elderly neighbours, selling poppies for air cadets, helping at a dementia support group and at their local churches.

I also introduced pupils to some of the wider School community support staff, working in departments such as maintenance, finance, performing arts, our registrar and HR. They explained what their role entails and demonstrated that we are all individual parts of one big community and we all have individual important parts to play in the whole.

Pre-prep pupils created bees this week to display in our DoK Hive reflecting that we are all busy working together. The connections with others via our communities creates a sense of affiliation and belonging - both so important to our self-esteem and mental wellbeing. This is highlighted in Michele Borba’s theories of the 5 building blocks to self-esteem in children’s development, that of affiliation.

We were also incredibly lucky to be joined on Wednesday by one of our parents, Joe Bates, founder of Halen, leading Years 9 and 10 in a breathing workshop designed to give them the tools to access and control their breath to calm and relax. This was followed by a workshop on the meaning of ‘masculinity’ to the male cohort in each of these year groups. Joe was able to discuss his own experiences in the SBS and the importance of he and his colleagues being able to express and support each other with their emotions. Pupils were so lucky to receive this insight - thank you, Joe.

We also had some canine visitors this week in the form of Dixie and Mrs Punter’s dog, Murphy. A therapeutic introduction of some well-behaved pets to bring some non-judgemental fluffy listening ears. They were very popular with all sections of the school!

The importance of looking after our mental health came more sharply into focus when we considered approaching possible stressful situations. Pupils have been given tips on how to look after their wellbeing in the build up and during exam week. They have also had material posted in their Google classrooms to refer to and remind them that exams are only a small part of their life and it is important to make time for the things that we enjoy doing too.

Wishing all pupils a productive and restful weekend, restored before the rigours of next week.

Mrs Douglas

The remote Irish village of Duneen has known little drama; and yet its inhabitants are troubled. Sergeant PJ Collins hasn't always been this overweight; mother of two Brid Riordan hasn't always been an alcoholic; and elegant Evelyn Ross hasn't always felt that her life was a total waste. So when human remains are discovered on an old farm, suspected to be that of Tommy Burke - a former love of both Brid and Evelyn - the village's dark past begins to unravel.

As the frustrated PJ struggles to solve a genuine case for the first time in his life, he unearths a community's worth of anger and resentments, secrets and regret

Senior School optional hoodie

The Senior School hoodies have been redesigned by members of the School Council and the finished product can be seen below. They have done a fantastic job at putting this design together and now finally getting to see the finished product.

This new hoodie is available from Stevenson's on their website: https://www.stevensons.co.uk/.  There is also the option to have your child's initials printed onto the front of the hoodie for a slight additional cost, something we would advise, to avoid mixing up tops with other pupils. This hoodie is not an essential item of School uniform, so there is no expectation for pupils to have it.

If you wish to see the sample, please pop into the Main Office and have a look.
