A message from Mrs Knox

We had a truly wonderful day on Wednesday as we gathered to wish our Year 11 pupils all the very best for their upcoming exams during a heartfelt farewell assembly. Mrs Sangiorgio prepared a fantastic slideshow celebrating their journey through the School, which you can view here. Year 2 charmed us all with a rendition of Reach for the Stars, and Year 6 delivered a thoughtful reading of Dr Seuss’s Oh, the Places You’ll Go. It was a moving and memorable occasion for all involved.

The Year 11 exams began in earnest yesterday, and our pupils deserve great credit for the maturity and focus with which they are approaching this important time.

Next week marks Mental Health Awareness Week, and our Wellbeing Manager, Mrs Douglas, has planned a range of engaging activities around this year’s theme of “Community”. She will be speaking with pupils about the importance of connection and belonging, and how these contribute positively to our mental health. We’re very much looking forward to what promises to be an inspiring week.

We were also delighted to welcome a good number of families to our Open Morning yesterday. Our pupil tour guides did a fantastic job representing the School, and we received many warm comments about their enthusiasm and professionalism.

Wishing you all a lovely and restful weekend.

Mrs Knox

Year 3 trip to Butser Ancient Farm

On Tuesday, Year 3 enjoyed a wonderful day at Butser Ancient Farm. We were greeted by our extremely informative guide and a rather gorgeous goat called Nutmeg, who the children thoroughly enjoyed introducing themselves to. They first visited an Iron Age round house and learnt about building techniques and what life would have been like at that time. They then tried their hand at chalk carving. First they smoothed the surfaces of the chalk with flints, then carved pictures into it before dying it with scrunched-up dock leaves.

Next, they had the opportunity to be archaeologists, digging into the ground and examining all the treasures that they unearthed. They then got into pairs and made wattle fences, weaving flexible hazel saplings around oak posts. Luckily, they weren’t asked to go and collect any animal dung to make the daub that would have gone on it to make the walls of the roundhouses! Later in the day, we had a tour of a Roman villa. Although it was much grander than the Iron Age buildings, most of the children said they would prefer to forsake the hypocausts, frescoes and mosaics and would rather live the simple life, round the fire in the cosy Celtic round houses.

Silver DofE Expedition

Last Thursday, 42 participants (the biggest School Silver expedition on record) travelled to Ditchling Beacon in the South Downs to begin a three-day walking expedition. Completing this 40+ km venture while carrying their kit is one of the four requirements of the Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Silver Award.

The seven groups of Year 10s walked west towards the first campsite at Small Dole near Steyning. After much comparing of blisters, they survived their first night of camping and cooking and set off for Washington Camp on the second day. One industrious group managed to liberate a discarded wheelbarrow and used it as a packhorse for the day. This has since become a much-prized DofE asset at School! There was a case of illness and another of a damaged arm, but the victims were resilient and their friends very supportive under trying circumstances.

The final day's walk was completed effectively (and surprisingly rapidly), finishing at Wepham (near Arundel). Everyone worked so hard, few, if any, of them having walked three significant back-to-back walks before in what were thoroughly hot and dry conditions (for a change). They have all been commended accordingly. Many thanks also to Matron for her medical assistance, Mrs Punter and Miss Walters for helping us for a day and a night apiece, and Mrs Vermeulen who stayed with us as the team medic for the full duration!

Mr Lodge and Mr Wyllie

To begin with this week, a thank you: to all of our Prep and Pre-prep pupils for their enthusiastic and polite hosting of those visiting our wonderful School on Open Morning. We had many comments from impressed guests, including praise for those Senior pupils who were touring them, and who enjoyed reminiscing fondly on their time in Prep and Pre-prep! I also thanked Prep pupils in assembly for a huge improvement in the tidiness of the cloakroom, not only taking more care of the space, but also their own (and others') belongings. Long may this trend continue! A final thank you, and well done, to Siena N in Year 4 for her very interesting talk on Judaism.

Nursery have made puff paint ice creams and had the chance to experiment with making real ice cream, too – perfect preparation for the warmer weather! Year 1 spent their Science lesson dissecting plants to understand the different parts and functions, then took home their sunflower and tomato plants that have been growing in the classroom. Year 2 were experimenting as well, seeing which materials would make marks – they were surprised that a brick made a coloured mark and that a wooden ruler could mark cardboard.

Year 6 took their learning into the Senior lab where Mrs Tattan-Robb, Head of Science, burnt various materials to demonstrate irreversible change – magnesium was the particular highlight! Year 3 delved deep into the inner workings of plant biology, observing the petals of white daffodils turning blue when placed in a beaker of ink. In English, Year 6 have written haiku inspired by the seasons and Munch's famous painting The Scream and limericks, which everyone agreed were fun, but much harder to master. Lastly, in DT, Year 5 chose whether to use a dowel or finger joint to assemble their bookends – with measurements underway, construction and tool usage begins next week!

Charlie R for fabulous number work this week, you worked methodically counting on from 10 to make the teen numbers.

Year 1: Oliver A for his enthusiastic start to the term. Oliver always has his hand up and will always be willing to have a go.

Austin Y for your consistent positive attitude towards your learning, your effort is outstanding!

Year 2: Sienna H for super impressive similes about The Great Fire of London. You used brilliant vocabulary to add depth to each one.

Swimmers of the Week

Oliver A for demonstrating his front crawl technique, streamlined body position and breathing bilaterally to the end of the pool and back.

Gracie B for such a positive attitude towards the challenge of swimming a whole length unaided. Gracie maintained a streamlined position and great technique which allowed her to increase her pace.

Mr Wright

This week, we wished our wonderful Year 11 cohort all the very best as they marked their final day before heading off on study leave. It was a joy to look back through photos of them over the years, reflecting on just how much they have grown, changed, and matured during their time with us.

Their last day was celebrated with a special assembly, where our Year 6 pupils read a poem from Oh, the Places You’ll Go! by Dr Seuss to send them off with good wishes for the future. Our Year 2 pupils added to the occasion with a heartwarming performance of Reach for the Stars. During the afternoon, the Science Department gave them a memorable send-off too, filling the lesson with bangs, fire and excitement through a series of spectacular experiments.

There was plenty of shirt-signing, cakes and refreshments to enjoy, and a beautiful new tree was planted to commemorate their time here.

We wish them all the very best over the coming weeks as they tackle their GCSE exams and look forward to celebrating with them again at our end-of-term events.

Meanwhile, in the Senior School this morning, House meetings took place where House Leaders shared details of upcoming competitions and events for pupils to get involved in over the Summer Term. Time was also taken to mark VE Day, reflecting on the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. Pupils watched a video highlighting the significance of this moment in history and its lasting impact on our future.

Finally, pupils continue to work hard towards their merit totals, with a special mention for those recognised this week for their achievements, including several pupils who have now reached the impressive milestone of 25 merit points:

Knysna G, Max M, Lockie B, Ethan G, George K, Bob P, Edith S, Declan E, Edie H, Ben K, Josie M, Mercy M, Emily N, Francesca R, Tom S, Oscar V.

A special mention goes to Kit B, Felix C, Chris M, Jack M and Jack P who have surpassed 200 merit points and were awarded their well-deserved badges.

ISA London South Senior Athletics

The Senior Athletics Squad travelled to Bromley last Friday to compete in the London South ISA Athletics Regional Qualifier. The whole of the Duke of Kent School team showed great determination and many came away from the competition with personal best times, heights and distances. The team spirit throughout the day was incredible to witness! Congratulations to Alfie H (100M and Shot Putt) and Hubert S (High Jump) who have qualified for the ISA National Finals in Birmingham for the second year in a row.

Mr Herbert

House Golf

Fifteen Year 11 boys took part in the House Golf Competition on Tuesday at Hoebridge GC. The standard of golf was strong with some very good techniques on show. This was a relaxed and enjoyable House event which was enjoyed by all the boys on their penultimate day before their exams started. Well done to Buzzard who won the trophy and to Jack D and Harry F who both posted six-over-par rounds over nine holes – these were the two lowest rounds of the day.

Year 11 v Staff Cricket Match

The pupils took on the staff on Tuesday evening in the annual Staff v Year 11 cricket match. The pupils fielded first and showed some great fielding and bowling. The Year 11 team was extremely well captained by Isaac P, who rotated players on and off the field brilliantly well. The staff posted 136 off 16 overs, which was always going to be difficult to beat. However, the Year 11s played some excellent shots and were so close to overtaking the staff team's score. A win for the staff this year, but more importantly, the atmosphere created by both teams and with so many parents supporting was extremely special and a pleasure witness. Well done to all who played.

Grub and Groove – Monday 26th May – midday

If you have a few hours spare on Monday 26th May then please come down to Knowle Park in Cranleigh. They are holding a 'Grub and Groove' event and a bunch of our Senior singers and musicians will be performing there in the afternoon. From midday, Miss Barnes' mini-choir will perform a half-hour set, followed by our Year 10 GCSE musos performing various ensembles and solo numbers. Also performing will be The Sham, the band made up of ex-pupils and our current Year 11 drumming star Charlie H. It would be wonderful to see some friendly faces in the crowd and it promises to be a lovely family event.

The organisers have teamed up with Moooh! Ice Cream and Heartwork Coffee to bring you a fantastic day out in the beautiful surroundings of Knowle Park. According to their website...

“…expect to taste delicious dishes from local artisans and culinary professionals. Watch them show off their skills in live cooking demos and learn a few tips to try at home. We’ll also have live music from talented local musicians to keep you entertained throughout the event. This is a free, family-friendly celebration, and everyone’s welcome.”

Jazz Night Cancellation

Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, the Jazz Night that was due to take place on 16th May has been cancelled. I know there were plenty of people looking forward to this wonderful evening, but sadly there is nothing we can do. There will definitely be an evening taking place in the new academic year, so rest assured the DoK School Jazz Club will happen again!

What Parents & Educators Need to Know about ZEPETO

ZEPETO is a hugely popular social app where users create custom avatars to explore virtual worlds, play games and chat with others. With millions of active players worldwide, it offers an engaging digital experience – but not without its concerns, especially for younger users.

ZEPETO’s vibrant world of custom outfits, interactive spaces and daily challenges might appeal to children – but those same features come with risks. From unfiltered chats and stranger danger to the temptation of in-app purchases, there’s plenty for parents to be aware of.

We’ve created this guide offering parents and educators an overview of the associated risks of ZEPETO and what you can do to keep young people safe when having fun online.

Click the link to learn more about "ZEPETO".

***Also, Internet Matters is a great website that can help you deal with online issues, give you advice for different age groups, and give you step-by-step guides for setting controls for various devices.***

Year 11 pupils who have spare medication/inhalers at School, we will hang onto medications until the end of term (some will be packed in the first aid bag for the Barcelona trip). We will aim to have them packed and ready for collection from School when you come to attend the Leavers Dinner or Parents Day. Any medications not collected will be disposed of.

The Year 11 pupils have been a lovely lot to look after in the medical room; it's been a real pleasure to watch them grow up and turn into a really decent bunch of human beings. Best of luck for the exams...you've got this!

Year 3 and Year 4 pupils who need medication administered during the sleepover or Isle of Wight trip respectively, please can you deliver medications to School before the half-term holiday. These can be left in the front office for the attention of Mrs Sarjant.

A reminder to parents of pupils attending the trip to Rwanda in October; please can you notify Mrs Sarjant of which travel immunisations your child has had and when (csarjant@dokschool.org). Malaria tablets will be essential; we will ask for these to be delivered to School a few weeks before the trip departs.

Please be aware we continue to have multiple cases of head lice in Pre-prep. We encourage prompt treatment (and repeat if necessary) to minimise spread to other pupils or staff.

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/head-lice-and-nits/

Finally, the Summer Term has seen a dramatic increase in visits to the medical room from pupils; some which are preventable/unnecessary. Please can pupils take hayfever medication before School to help get on top of symptoms. Hydration with plenty of water will also help to prevent some headaches/tummy pains etc. Pupils are also encouraged to take care in general at break times; accidents will happen, but we urge some common sense to keep accidents to a minimum. One key piece of advice needed this week: "look where you are going!"

Have a lovely weekend.

The School Nurses

With the first of the written GCSE exams happening today, all our pupils' thoughts are focusing on the upcoming School exams beginning (for Year 10) at the end of next week. In our assembly on Monday, I will be addressing the need for ensuring self-care during exams and some advice on reducing exam stress and anxiety. We will also be posting more detailed information in Google classrooms and emailing home to parents support they can provide at home.

I will be available to pupils who may be struggling during that week and also during my usual open door times of Monday and Thursday break and lunchtimes, next week.

It is so important for pupils to be reminded at home that the exams are an opportunity for them to practise in exam conditions so that by the time they are in Year 10 and 11 they are experienced in the format. Also an opportunity for enhancing their own awareness at where targets may need to be directed, rather than a measurement of failure or success.

The choices they make over the next couple of weeks will be reflected in how the week goes for them. It is an opportunity to test themselves rather than a measure against their peers – looking internally for measures of success rather than externally is far more conducive to good mental wellbeing.

Advice for parents and pupils:

Help your child beat exam stress - NHS

Info on exam stress - for 11-18 year olds | Mind

Next week we will also be marking Mental Health Awareness week and the theme of community, when pupils will hear the results of the community audit that they filled in last week.

We are hoping to meet before half-term to discuss the book.

The book we are reading this term is Graham Norton’s Holding. Here is a brief summary of the book:

The remote Irish village of Duneen has known little drama; and yet its inhabitants are troubled. Sergeant PJ Collins hasn't always been this overweight; mother of two Brid Riordan hasn't always been an alcoholic; and elegant Evelyn Ross hasn't always felt that her life was a total waste. So when human remains are discovered on an old farm, suspected to be that of Tommy Burke - a former love of both Brid and Evelyn - the village's dark past begins to unravel.

As the frustrated PJ struggles to solve a genuine case for the first time in his life, he unearths a community's worth of anger and resentments, secrets and regret.

Senior School optional hoodie

The Senior School hoodies have been redesigned by members of the School Council and the finished product can be seen below. They have done a fantastic job at putting this design together and now finally getting to see the finished product.

This new hoodie is available from Stevenson's on their website: https://www.stevensons.co.uk/.  There is also the option to have your child's initials printed onto the front of the hoodie for a slight additional cost, something we would advise, to avoid mixing up tops with other pupils. This hoodie is not an essential item of School uniform, so there is no expectation for pupils to have it.

If you wish to see the sample, please pop into the Main Office and have a look.
