A message from Mrs Knox

A highlight for me this week was listening to Year 1 as they read out delightful letters to Father Christmas. Their letters were charming and the children were very curious to know all about the elves and how many carrots Rudolf ate for his supper! I had the pleasure of popping them up the chimney on the magical Christmas hour. The children then read out the replies from Father Christmas the following day with great delight. Year 11 have had fun decorating the common room and the form rooms are now adorned with tinsel and paper chains. We are well into the Christmas spirit and are looking forward to many festivities next week including our Carol Service on Tuesday evening and the Nativity play by Pre-prep which I have no doubt will be simply delightful. The Prep School Christmas Concert this evening is shaping up to be another fabulous musical event. Good luck to all performers. There have also been some great football and netball matches from both boys and girls this week with some very skilled performances. All in all, a super week.

All Shook Up

Another Senior Production came to a stunning conclusion last Saturday, with the 70 pupils involved in the musical 'All Shook Up' creating a wonderful piece of theatre that wowed the adoring audiences for four nights!

This was the first time that we have tried a double cast concept and it meant we had an extra performance on the Thursday evening in order to accommodate the split. This also meant of course that the chorus had to work even harder to keep their energy and focus for each performance - and work they did! The singing, dancing, acting and stage crew/tech work was all top class and the flavour of Elvis' brilliant music was felt in full rock'n'roll force each night. Each and every pupil should be incredibly proud of themselves, from the Year 7s who had never done it before to the seasoned Year 11 performers who carried and led the ensemble so well. Huge thanks are due of course to the whole team, - Lisa Lee, Mrs Honey, Mrs Punter, Mrs Douglas, Miss Hudson, Miss Barnes, Mr Forrester and Miss Stamp. To put on a show of this scale in only 10 weeks requires commitment and effort from all involved and the School community never disappoints. Head over to the School website to see some of the photos.

Year 5 Assembly

On Wednesday morning, 5T performed their class assembly to their parents and peers. With the help of 'The Constructors', the children built up detailed paragraphs, step by step, using a variety of techniques such as pathetic fallacy, similes, metaphors and repetition to bring the wonderful story of Luna, and her journey to become an astronaut, alive. The children performed with an amazing amount of energy and confidence and sang beautifully. Well done 5T, you should be very proud of yourselves!

Senior House Bake Off

The much anticipated Senior final for the House Bake Off took place. The five pupils were tasked with creating an illusion sponge cake and they more than stepped to the challenge! The creativity and baking prowess was exceptional. As always, the atmosphere was very positive and there was lots of encouragement as the wonderful creations took shape. The final results were a pepperoni pizza, a radio and two different sets of pancakes which looked very realistic.

We were fortunate to welcome Eleanor McClelland, who is Head Of Food at Graze, who lent her expertise to the judging panel with Mr Gritton and Mr Southee. Each cake was meticulously judged on appearance, taste and flavour and the final decision was very tight with little to separate each of the cakes. Congratulations to Archie B (Kestrel) who claimed first place. Phoebe P (Buzzard), Alexander I (Hawk) and Mercy and Will M (Peregrine) have much to be proud of as this final was very competitive. All of the Senior School pupils who entered received three House points.

With both competitions concluded, Buzzard won the competition overall. This year’s House Bake Off set a new record for participation with 86 pupils taking part across the whole School. The House Bake Off will return next year!

Mr Gritton

We had the most fantastic assembly from Year 5 this week, sharing with us the splendid, sophisticated, space themed writing on which they have been working of late. Mrs Tuite has already put the story of Luna on display in the Prep corridor for us all to revisit and enjoy. Pupils in Years 5 and 6 also had the wonderful opportunity to meet author, Lisa Thompson, who led them through an inspiring writing workshop. Elsewhere, Year 6 have written formal letters, appraising the novel they have just finished, and Year 3 completed newspaper articles reporting the terrible news that Sneeze, the dragon, has destroyed the Choo Choo village!

In Science this week, Year 4 pupils undertook an experiment to find out which materials were good insulators and then recorded their findings, and Year 3s investigated which type of paper is the most absorbent, making sure they carried out a fair test. Year 3 pupils also were busy in RS, doing some independent research into their chosen Hindu deities.

In Pre-prep, Nursery have been introduced to syllables and Year 1 read Mrs Knox their letters to Father Christmas, sent them up the chimney and have already had replies back from him, to their utter delight. All the classrooms in Prep and Pre-prep are looking eye-wateringly festive, just in time for the final week of term, thanks to their creative spirit and a whole lot of tinsel. I look forward to seeing many of you at the Prep Concert, and cannot wait to hear your children showing off their talents, as ever.

Mrs Henry

I want to begin this week by congratulating all the pupils involved in the Senior School production of All Shook Up. It was truly an incredible achievement and a testament to outstanding teamwork. The production's success was due to the collaborative efforts of everyone involved—those working tirelessly behind the scenes managing props, lighting, and sound; the talented individuals helping with costumes and makeup; and, of course, the brilliant performers on stage who sang, danced, and delivered humour with such flair.

Having attended three of the four performances, I was struck by how each show had its unique charm. The dual cast members brought their own interpretations to the characters, making each portrayal distinctive and captivating. A huge well done to everyone involved, and a special thanks to the fantastic team in the Performing Arts department. Their hard work over the past few months truly brought the production to life.

Meanwhile, learning has continued in lessons this week, even amidst the excitement of the upcoming holidays and the festive joy of Christmas. Looking ahead, next week promises to be packed with holiday cheer: the Carol Concert on Tuesday evening, Christmas Jumper Day, Christmas lunch and festive films on Thursday, and our final assembly with the highly anticipated Christmas Prefect ‘Takeover’ on Friday. There’s so much to look forward to!

This week also celebrated the dedication and perseverance of our pupils, with many reaching the impressive milestone of earning 25 Merit points. A huge congratulations to:
Mac Y, Henry M, Jude B, Felix C, Oliver C, Iona H, Clara H-S, Ben K, Chloe K, Benedict L, Alex K, Vir O’R, Isaac P and Mattie R.

A special mention goes to Jenson P and Jamie P, who have surpassed 100 Merit points and have receive their recognition badges.

Even more impressive, Isabella N and Sam R have exceeded 200 Merit points and have been presented with their well deserved recognition badges.

Well done to all our pupils for their hard work and achievements this week.

ISA National Swimming Finals

Congratulations to all the pupils from Duke of Kent School who had qualified to represent ISA London South at the National Swimming Finals at the London Aquatic Centre in the Olympic Park last Friday. The standard of swimming was very high and many national records were broken on the day! Isaac P swam in the medley relay, freestyle relay and individual butterfly race. He swam with fantastic technique and performed very well against swimmers from Years 11-13. Amelie C swam exceptionally well in the 50m Para Freestyle winning gold in her para class!!! Henry G, Sonny C, Alfie H and Tom St all took part in a freestyle relay. It was amazing to see all of the swimmers performing so well with many personal best being achieved. This was a fantastic opportunity for all the swimmers and it was brilliant to see them overcoming their nerves to swim in such an exciting environment in front of a huge crowd. There was also an opportunity to see some Olympic divers practising in the diving pool. Well done to all involved, you should be incredibly proud of yourselves!!!

Netball: U8 and U9 v. Ripley Court

On Thursday 5th of December, the U8’s and 9s embarked on a trip to Ripley Court School for their last netball match of the term. On the way there we listened to festive music to get everyone hyped for the game. The games were competitive, with all the girls showing great effort and skill. The blue team showed great resilience throughout. Nola S and Maddie C were amazing in defence and Ayla O’K showed great improvement with her moving off the ball and getting into space. Well done to Annabelle W for wanting to practice her passing and catching when the team were off the court to make sure everyone was prepared for the game. The green team were swift and critical with their passing. Well done to Pia S for her bravery after a nasty fall. The yellow team had a thrilling draw! Darcey M and Obie M were great in defence and did some incredible interceptions, making it an exciting match to spectate. It was a lovely afternoon to celebrate the end of a great season.

Netball: U10 and U11 v. Pennthorpe and Frensham Heights

On Wednesday afternoon, the U10 and U11 teams welcomed not one, but two schools for some netball! The girls enjoyed short matches against both Pennthorpe School and Frensham Heights School. It was a lovely afternoon packed full of entertaining and exciting matches! The U11 team enjoyed the opportunity to try some different positions throughout the afternoon and won their match narrowly against Pennthorpe School and drew against Frensham Heights School. Meanwhile, on the neighbouring court, the U10s were also enjoying lots of success with close games against both schools ending in two wins! A highlight of the afternoon was seeing the wonderful attitude of our pupils when being asked to play for the other team. On each occasion, the girls volunteered without hesitation to play some extra netball and support the other schools - it was great to see! Well done to all the players for a cracking afternoon and a great netball season, onto hockey matches after Christmas!

Our Wellbeing prefect, Lucy M, decided to run a Christmas Doodle Club this week. She recognised how much the Prep pupils enjoyed the Doodle Club we ran for Hello Yellow and thought it would be lovely to offer them another opportunity to doodle this half term.

She obviously had the right idea as Mr Wright described the audible gasps of excitement that his announcement about Doodle club were met with during assembly!

Armed with glitter pens, glitter glue, coloured paper and festive stickers, Lucy, Matty R and myself were joined by over 25 Year 3-6 pupils engaged in festive Christmas doodling.

It was lovely to see them so engaged and enthusiastic about their work and having complete free rein and ownership of their creativity.

I was also impressed with their diligent ‘thank yous’ to Lucy and Matty as they left clutching their creations.

It is wonderful to see the pupils thinking about and supporting each other by giving up their breaks, especially when energy levels are running low toward the end of term.

Wishing you all a glittery weekend!

Mrs Douglas

Lots of tired pupils at school this week, and inevitable ill health doing the rounds.  A reminder that pupils with a temperature of 37.8 or higher should stay at home until their fever is resolved without the help of medication.  Pupils with vomiting or diarrhoea bugs need to stay home for 48 hours after the last episode for infection control.

Pupils who aren't quite 100% but are well enough to attend School are welcome to visit the Medical Room at break times for paracetamol/ibuprofen (no need to supply your own; we have plenty here) to help manage symptoms. Please can they also supply their own lozenges and tissues.

Some pupils who are a little under the weather are requesting to be signed "off games".  We would encourage pupils to participate in exercise at School as much as possible due to the numerous physical and mental health benefits.  However, if they do not feel well enough to participate, then off games requests should be made in writing by email (by 8am preferably) to games staff gherbert@dokschool.org and jjmonk@dokschool.org (and please cc nurse@dokschool.org).  Pupils who are off games are usually asked to stay at School during match day afternoons and are encouraged to watch home fixtures (unless the weather is extremely cold); so please be suitably prepared with a warm coat, hat and gloves.

Finally, a reminder to Year 9 parents to please complete your E Consents for your child to have the DTP and MenACWY in January.

Senior School optional hoodie

The Senior School hoodies have been redesigned by members of the School Council and the finished product can be seen below. They have done a fantastic job at putting this design together and now finally getting to see the finished product.

This new hoodie is available from Stevenson's on their website: https://www.stevensons.co.uk/.  There is also the option to have your child's initials printed onto the front of the hoodie for a slight additional cost, something we would advise, to avoid mixing up tops with other pupils. This hoodie is not an essential item of School uniform, so there is no expectation for pupils to have it.

If you wish to see the sample, please pop into the Main Office and have a look.
