A Message from Mrs Knox

What a busy week for the pupils and, for you, our parents! It has been really lovely at the parent teacher events this week to discuss the progress of your children and to observe the senior children engaging well with these conversations about their learning. The Open Morning was really well attended and our Year 9 guides were brilliant ambassadors. We received a number of emails to say what a credit they were to the school. Well done Year 9! Thank you also to PADoK for joining us to talk to the new parents who were genuinely appreciative of their insight. Thank you also to Holroyd Howe, our caterer, who joined us this morning to talk to PADoK reps about the food provision at the school. Your feedback has been invaluable and they wil be pulling together a "you said, we did" document with areas of focus. One quick fix is a link to the weekly menu below in the bulletin. Finally, the mixed Hockey tournament this afternoon was a fabulous way to end the week with our pupils competing against 4 other schools. Next week, is ……World Book Day…….. a day we all look forward to! Have a lovely weekend.

House Debating

What a fantastic day we had on Friday 10th February, listening to all the incredible motions in our House Debating Competition. Under the adjudication of the Cranleigh Rotary Youth Debating judge, Andrew Kolmar, together with Mrs Southee and Miss Francis, the Houses in Year 7, 8 and 9 persuaded, pondered and perfected their arguments, much to the awe of the audience. A special thank you must go to Molly F and Josh W-D, who stepped in at the last moment to represent their House due to one of their team members being unwell. The winning Houses were as follows: Year 7, Kestrel (Alex W, Orson A and Elliott S) with their motion: ‘The school bus is better than being picked up by your parents’; Year 8, Peregrine (Annie B, Mercy M and George C), their motion being: ‘Being an only child is more rewarding than having siblings’ and finally Year 9, Kestrel (Saoirse W, Daisy R and Josh W-D) arguing whether prisoners should be allowed the vote. Huge congratulations to the winning Houses and to everyone who took part.

GCSE Computer Science VR Workshop

Year 11 pupils at Duke of Kent School had the opportunity to participate in an exciting Virtual Reality workshop. The workshop aimed to provide a brief introduction to virtual reality and showcase how it can be used for training purposes.

The workshop was conducted by an industry expert who started by giving a brief overview of the concept of virtual reality and its significance in the modern world. Pupils were then given the chance to experience how VR works by putting together the parts of a skeleton using a VR headset.

The activity proved to be both engaging and educational, as pupils were able to interact with the virtual environment in a way that would have been impossible with traditional learning methods. Pupils gained a deeper understanding of the human skeleton and were able to visualise the bone structure in a 3D environment, making it easier to learn and remember.

The VR experience also showcased how the technology can be used for training purposes in various fields, including healthcare and engineering. The pupils were amazed at how the technology could be used to simulate real-world scenarios and improve training outcomes.

This workshop experience will prove to be invaluable for pupils as they continue to study their ‘Issues and impacts of technology’ topic. They now have a better understanding of how virtual reality can be used for education and training purposes, and they have experienced firsthand the benefits of using VR technology.

Overall, the Virtual Reality workshop was a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to learn about this exciting technology and its potential applications. We are grateful to the team who facilitated this workshop and look forward to exploring more innovative teaching methods in the future.

JustGiving for Sarcoma UK

A family friend of the Callanan's (a DoK family), Jasmin Ford is climbing Mount Snowden in support of Sarcoma UK. Amelie in Year 5 was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma Cancer at only 5 years old which subjected her to intensive chemotherapy and sadly resulted in her left leg being amputated. Sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that develops in the bone and soft tissue. Sarcoma is difficult to diagnose and one of the hardest to treat. Sarcoma UK is a national charity that funds vital research, offers support for anyone affected by sarcoma cancer and campaigns for better treatments.   By supporting Jaz, we can help change this. Your donation will help researchers find answers, keep Support Lines open, and raise awareness to improve treatment and standards of care for patients like Amelie.

If you wish to make a donation to this amazing charity and one very close to our own Duke of Kent School community, you can donate through Jasmin's JustGiving page.

Mrs Callanan

It was lovely to see so many of our Prep School parents on Thursday evening, attending meetings with Form Teachers. We are also looking forward to seeing many Pre-prep parents next Tuesday afternoon.

For some of our Year 4 pupils, the week started with an exciting afternoon at Longacre School, who hosted the second "Spell It!" competition we have now attended. There were several other schools participating, and we were hugely proud of how Oliver T, Layla B, George S and Ivan K conducted themselves as they tackled a range of treicky and unfamiliar spelling tasks. Year 4 have also been interpreting how different poems present a similar theme. They've worked hard to write persuasively and created two poems of their own about spiders; one describing them negatively, the other positively. The latter proved a harder challenge!

Year 1 have also been busy developing their writing skills, retelling the story of The Enormous Turnip, and creating their own script for a dinosaur film...no doubt out soon in cinemas near you! Reception pupils designed a cafe and created their own menu, pricing all the items very carefully, Year 2's highlight seemed to be their exploration of the world using Google Earth, to learn more about different African countries, and Nursery children had a great time making their own play dough and, of course, pancakes on Tuesday!

Lastly, Year 3 loved their Science experiment this week, making metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous rock out of...Starburst sweets! And Year 6 had just as much fun finally getting to play a game of Top Trumps with the cards they have been painstakingly developing in their recent Maths lessons. Well done, everyone - what an action-packed week!

School was straight back into the swing of things after the half-term with a busy mix of school council meetings, hockey, netball and rugby matches, an Open Morning and a Parents' Meeting. A real feature of the Open Morning was the conduct of the pupils, who spoke honestly and openly to our visitors, when questioned, and were a real credit to the school.

The Year 10 Parents' Meeting was a really enjoyable experience; the atmosphere was hugely positive and the value of pupils attending alongside their parents and being able to discuss their strengths and weaknesses, and therefore take some ownership of their learning, cannot be underestimated. This weekend Mr Southee, Mrs Southee and Mr Seeley are taking a group of Year 9 pupils down to Brighton for an optional trip focusing on various food cultures and I wish them all the best for an enjoyable and exciting trip whilst this afternoon the school hosts an U11 and U13 Duke of Kent School Hockey Tournament - good luck to all those taking part.

The following were invited to attend Celebration Snack Break today and received their lunch fastpass and stationary prize; Orson A, Erin C (Year 7), Harris H-H, Edie H, Robert S (Year 8), Zac L, George P, Annabelle R (Year 10), Natasha B, Maddie I, Charlie N, Harry S (Year 11). Well done to you all!

Cross Country: ISA London South Regional Competition

On Tuesday, 13 pupils from Duke of Kent School travelled with Mr Orme and Miss Arnold to Radnor House for the ISA London South Regional Junior Cross Country. There were four races on the day; U9 Girls' ace, U9 Boys Race, U11 Girls' Race and U11 Boys' Race. It was a great course for the runners where a quick start was important. All the Duke of Kent School runners were fantastic, doing their best while running and cheering on the others from the side lines to give their support. With 60 plus runners in each race from 15 different schools, it was fantastic to see some top 20 finishes in the U11 Girls and Boys races from Bea T-R, Holly B, Thibaut J, Rommy B and Henry W. Well done to everyone involved, it was great see you all representing the school with such great enthusiasm.

Mr Orme and Miss Arnold

Cross Country: ISA London South Senior Regionals

Duke of Kent School hosted the ISA London South Senior Cross Country on Friday 10th February. This was a fabulous afternoon of competitive running with schools taking part from all over the south east of England. The top ten runners from each age group were selected to represent the London south Team on the Saturday 4th M at Worksop College. Congratulations to all who took part from Duke of Kent School and congratulations to Alex S and Rosie S for winning their races. Both Rosie and Alex are also joined by Ollie K, Ollie C, Jess I, Daisy R, Isaac P, Jack B, Emily B, Ava W, Charlie G, Rufus B, Francesca R, Clara H-S, Helena K and William R for also qualifying to the National Finals. We look forward to seeing how those, who can take part, will run next weekend. Good Luck!!

Mr Herbert

Netball: U15/16 v. King Edward's Witley

On Tuesday afternoon, the girls had a great match against King Edward's. The team played really well, Abi W, Imogen C, Ava W and Frankie M worked well using a diamond formation to close down space and work the ball out of the defensive half to the attackers. Frankie M, Tilly C, Maddie I and Alex K communicated well and Tilly C and Frankie M mastered their loopy passes into the circle for Maddie I and Alex K to hold their space and shoot from great positions. Well done girls, it was a brilliant win (20-10) and I look forward to your next match.

Mrs Woolgar

Girls' Football: U10/11 B v. Cottesmore

On Wednesday afternoon, the U10/11 B team welcomed Cottesmore to Duke of Kent School for their football match. The girls were very excited, and couldn’t wait to get going! It was a fantastic start, with the first goal scored by Halle within the first 5 minutes, quickly followed by a second goal by Rebekah. Our deference worked brilliantly together, with Penny and Amelie supporting Millie in goal, meaning our half time score was 2-0. By the second half the rain had begun, but this didn't dampen their spirits. Hope, Rebekah and Bea worked enthusiastically in the midfield, helping Bea to score a further two goals. The final score was 4-2 to Duke a Kent, leaving our girls happy with their performance, well done!

Mrs Turnbull

Boys' Hockey: U14/15 v. Frensham Heights.

Both sides started the game very cautiously, trying to get a foot hold in the game. Frensham struck first after strong defending from Josh WD, Sam S and Jack B. This ignited Duke of Kent School into action with Jamie P, Rufus B, Isaac P linking up well in midfield to pass the ball around.

Oscar H ran tirelessly upfront, applying pressure on the opposition defenders. In the end Duke of Kent School won 3-2 with some brilliant play and work rate. Well done to all those involved.

Mr Green

Boys' Hockey: U10/11A v. Frensham Heights

This Wednesday, the U10/11 A team played a hockey match against Frensham Heights. The game started quickly with some good fast paced passing and movement from Duke of Kent School. Henry O'B and Henry S were both very solid in defense, allowing the others to focus on their attacking play. During the match a couple of great team goals were scored for Duke of Kent School. This was fantastic to see, the boys putting the skills that they have been practising on show during the match. Well played to everyone involved.

Mr Orme

House Music

The House Music Semi-Finals are taking place in preparation for our finals day next Friday. It's gearing up to be a fantastic day! With the House Songs every pupil from Year 3 to 11 will be involved and it is always wonderful to see every pupil up there performing.

Our judge Isaac Stuart will also be holding a Q&A for our GCSE pupils and performing to the whole school, which promises to be fab. Isaac is a 22 year old singer-songwriter, pianist and multi-instrumental pop artist from Banbury, Oxfordshire. He released his debut single last year and has since acquired over half a million streams. He has appeared live on the Chris Evans Breakfast show and the Graham Norton Saturday radio show and is supported by the BBC Introducing initiative. Check him out here - https://isaacstuart.com/

What Parents and Carers Need to Know about Artificial Intelligence (AI) Solutions

Artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming a part of modern life and, for all intents and purposes, isn’t something we can shy away from. The explosion of ChatGPT, for instance, has brought this kind of technology into a more purposeful context, with millions now using the language model to help solve problems, write computer code or even complete their homework.

So how do artificial intelligence solutions work exactly? What kind of risks do they bring? Will they eventually negate the need for certain job roles, particularly in the creative industries? Our guide this week explains what AI solutions are and suggests ways parents and carers can support children to use the technology with an open mind. In the guide you'll find tips on a number of potential risks such as inaccurate information, reinforcing stereotypes and what impact the technology might have on children’s creativity and problem-solving skills.

We are experiencing a few pupils at school (particularly in the lower years) exhibiting symptoms of Conjunctivitis. It usually affects both eyes and is caused by infection or allergies.  Symptoms include making the eyes:

  • Red
  • Burn or feel gritty
  • Produce pus that sticks to lashes
  • Itch
  • Water

There are things you can do to help ease your symptoms.

  • Boil water and let it cool down before you gently wipe your eyelashes to clean off crusts with a clean cotton wool pad (1 piece for each eye).
  • Hold a cold flannel on your eyes for a few minutes to cool them down.
  • Do not wear contact lenses until your eyes are better.

Your child does not need to stay away from school with conjunctivitis unless they are feeling very unwell. If treating the symptoms at home doesn't help, we would recommend you visit your pharmacist, GP, or even Specsavers to discuss getting eye drops or ointment. (If this needs to be given during the school day, it should be handed in at the front office in the morning with a completed parental consent form).

We have also been notified of a case of Head lice in Prep School this week.  Pupils with Head Lice are not required to isolate from school, but they should be treated at the earliest opportunity.  The NHS recommends wet combing, but you can also get treatments from your pharmacists:

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/head-lice-and-nits/

Finally, we have two possible (unconfirmed) cases of Shingles in Senior School.  You cannot catch shingles from someone else; it develops as a flare up of the dormant chicken pox virus.  However, people who have not yet had chicken pox can potentially catch it from someone who has Shingles.  Pupils with Shingles may still attend school if their rash is dry, or if any areas of wet rash can remain covered with a dressing and/or clothing.  See the NHS guidance below.

PADoK Book Club

We would love you to join the PADoK Book Club next month on Thursday 23rd March.  We are currently reading “Snow Country” the new novel from the bestselling author Sebastian Faulks.   “Snow Country” moves from doomed love to post-war Vienna, and The Times described the book as 'Fascinating... A rich, dark story'.  It has also been described as “a superb novel, a love story of enormous emotional weight and a portrait of Europe torn apart”.  If you are not free to join us when we get together on 23rd March but want to be part of the Book Club, we would love for you to read the book and send in your comments to us to share on the night.

Duke of Kent School Singers

Another fab session this morning with a great number of singers.

After a good voice work out, Mr Rye showed us a video of Sara Bareilles’ ‘Brave’.  We then started to run through the first two verses.  It is a wordy song and will certainly stretch us as a choir but what a great challenge to have.  Mr Rye is such an enthusiastic choirmaster and patiently works through each line so we all understand how it should be sung.  After half term we will continue to work on “Brave” and build in the harmonies.

As always please do remember that there is never any pressure to perform, no set plan to unless we want to. Our focus is always on enjoying singing and getting the most out of our time together

Huge thanks to all who come along and make the sessions so much fun. The group is a very fluid mix of past and present parents. Everyone is welcome to join at any time and we have a WhatsApp group you can dip in and out of as you’d like to. Please feel free to contact me directly if you are interested or have any queries rhodricathy@sky.com / 07813 282910.

We would absolutely love to have some male voices coming more regularly. If you’re out there even slightly thinking about it, please come along and give it a go!

Senior School Optional Hoodie

The Senior School hoodies have redesigned by members of the School Council and the finished product can be seen above.  They have done a fantastic job at putting this design together and now finally getting to see the finished product.

This new hoodie is available from Stevenson's on their website: https://www.stevensons.co.uk/.  There is also the option to have your child's initials printed onto the front of the hoodie for a slight additional cost, something we would advise to avoid mixing up tops with other pupils. This hoodie is not an essential item of School uniform, so there is no expectation for pupils to have it.

If you wish to see the sample, please pop into the Main Office to see me and have a look at the new hoodie.
