A Message from Mrs Knox

What a pleasure to host afternoon tea with our previous Heads of School last Friday! I was joined by Minnie, James, Oscar, Milly, Kora, Maddie and Charlie and it was so lovely to hear them chatting together sharing memories of their time at Duke of Kent School as Head Boy and Head Girl and giving pertinent pieces of advice to Maddie and Charlie. It was a real privilege to share an afternoon with them.

Huge congratulations to our Year 11 pupils this week on the successful completion of their GCSE Mock examinations. All pupils are to be commended on the way they approached this important milestone and the attitude they demonstrated throughout. Thank you also to our teachers and in particular, our exams officer, Mr Wyllie, on the excellent organisation of the Mocks. Well done also to our cross country runners this week. It was fabulous watching year 7 & 8 pupils pace themselves around a very wet and muddy course and some terrific sprint finishes. Good luck to Prep School pupils on Monday!

Year 2 Visit to Brickies

On Wednesday, Year 2 ventured to Brickies Lego Club in Wokingham. The children had a fun-packed day full of imagination and creation, with lots of learning thrown in for good measure! As we're set to start our new Science topic, 'Plants', very soon, the day's Lego building workshops reflected the learning we will soon be doing in class. Ben, the leader of Lego City, gave the children three challenges which they all completed with enthusiasm and vigour. Their first challenge was to create a 2D or 3D plant, making sure it included the crucial elements - roots, stem, leaves, petals and the flower. The children's next challenge saw them using their new knowledge of pollinators to create one out of Lego. Some of the pollinators they chose to replicate were wasps, bees, ladybirds and butterflies and a few even challenged themselves to create impressive 3D versions! The children's final challenge involved them creating their own dream garden, complete with a greenhouse. As you can imagine, the final masterpieces were very diverse in layout; some of the children's gardens had slides and treehouses whereas other children's gardens were more peaceful with lily ponds and areas to sit and relax!

Year 2, I was very proud to hear of your team work, positive behaviour and perseverance in all of the challenges. You represented our school beautifully and as a result, you earned 4 marbles in our 'treat jar'! Well done!

"I loved building our own Lego gardens!" Florence H

"My pollinator was beautiful! I created a butterfly with red and yellow wings!" Ivy H

This week in Nursery, the pupils have been busy making snowy owls and huskies. They've also baked polar bear cakes, although the greatest hit seems to have been the snow themed 'tuff' tray, with which they were completely absorbed! Year 2's highlight of the week was undoubtedly their trip to Brickies (reported on elsewhere in this Bulletin), whilst the Year 3 children particularly enjoyed developing their measuring skills with some cross-curricular Maths, Topic and Science work. They ventured outside, despite the rain, and learned how to use a trundle wheel, measuring out the height of a rainforest tree and learning a song about the layers of vegetation in tropical forests.

School Council turned their attention to forests, albeit our own Junior Jungle, in their meeting this week. Discussions about how the area might be improved or developed were lively, although they thought it best to canvas wider opinion across Prep School before any decisions are made. The councillors have created a questionnaire to give everyone a chance to offer their thoughts, so watch this space for news of any plans that emerge. In their English lessons, Years 5 and 6 were tasked with writing informal letters, inspired by the characters in their respective class novels: 'Goodnight, Mr Tom' and 'Holes'. The fascinating process of mummification has been as popular as ever with our Year 4s, whilst the dinosaur themed learning in Reception and Year 1 took a theatrical and geographic turn this week, with pupils making prehistoric puppets as well as locating where various species of dinosaur would have lived on a modern world map.

Our Assembly this week centred on the need for us all to develop resilience in our lives, and I have no doubt every child has demonstrated this essential attribute at various times in their social interactions, sporting endeavours and academic pursuits. Do encourage them to share an example or two of when they have needed to be resilient this week - I'm sure they'd love to hear your own examples of when you've needed to do likewise (such as getting sleepy children fed, dressed and into the car each weekday morning, to name just one entirely theoretical example...). Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Mrs Henry

A rather wet and wild week that saw the Years 9 and 10 cross country sadly fall victim of the weather whilst the Year 11 cohort maturely completed their Mocks. The Senior School Council met on Tuesday to discuss what tasks pupils may wish to be involved in during the upcoming Community Week in June, what organisations may benefit from our help and how we may be able to make a positive difference.

The Sustainability Committee met on Monday to discuss our ongoing projects for the term and were also invited to get involved in Mrs Knox's campaign to furnish every form group classroom with a pot plant. Not only did the committee get the joy of taking these to all the classrooms (to receive some very positive and excited responses I must say!) they also learnt about repotting the plants and arranged the plants into suitable containers with the correct soil provision. As we stand all plants are in situ and thriving and I have no doubt the pupils will do a fine job ensuring things stay this way.

Celebration Snack Break this week was attended by Will R, Kai G (Year 10), Tom B, Ariana L, Sydney R (Year 9), Rhys W, Jack P, Heath P, Ben K, Arthur D-K, Will B (Year 8), Ben R, Bob P and Theo C (Year 7). Congratulations to you all for achieving the requisite number of Merit points and receiving your lunch fastpass and stationary prize.

Years 7 and 8 Cross Country

On Wednesday afternoon, all pupils in Years 7 & 8 took part in House Cross Country. Unfortunately, the weather was not on our side but luckily the boys and girls were prepared to get muddy!! The boys in Years 7 & 8 were up first, the effort was fantastic from each and every pupil. It was a big field with 46 pupils taking part, the boys put in some great performances and enjoyed their hot chocolate and treat afterwards!

A huge well done to Oliver C who finished in 1st place with Oscar V and Jude B with top 3 finishes in Year 8. In Year 7, Ollie K came in 1st with Sam H and Max S in 2nd and 3rd place. Next up were the girls. It was great to see another race full of spirit, effort and determination. Congratulations to Alice B, Francesca R and Rose S for coming top 3 respectively in Year 8 whilst Willow, Molly and Esme finished in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for Year 7. Most importantly, well done to all the runners for completing the course with smiles on their faces!!

Girls' Hockey: Years 3 and 4 v. Ripley Court

On Thursday afternoon, the Years 3 and 4 girls had their first hockey match of the term. Unfortunately, the weather was not kind to us but despite the rain the girls happily warmed up and got prepared for their matches! We welcomed Ripley Court to our Wilsons' Pitch and the games got underway! Miss Vickers' U8/9 team were on fire from the very start and scored within minutes with a great breakaway goal from Florence A. The brilliant play continued as Eva W dominated the midfield with some great dribbling skills, Layla B created lots of goal scoring opportunities and scored the second goal for the team. The best bit about the match was that the girls tried really hard to look for a pass rather than crowding the ball - it was great to see for their first match of the season! The girls enjoyed scoring 5 goals in total and taking the win, a huge well done! Meanwhile, Miss Arnold's U8/9 were also having a fantastic time! Violet W put in some great tackles and managed to regain possession for her team on multiple occasions eventually setting up a great goal for Mila-Rose S to tap in for the team to go 1-0 up before half time. The girls played even better in the second half scoring more goals and defending with confidence. Well done to everyone involved for 2 great results!

Miss Vickers and Miss Arnold

Rugby: Years 5 and 6 v. Ripley Court and St. Edmund's

On a very wet and cold day at Ripley Court, Duke of Kent School Years 5 and 6 boys played their first games of rugby this year. The matches were all touch or tag due to the ambulance strike on that day. All the Duke of Kent School teams played extremely well against Ripley Court and St. Edmund's. The Tigers showed good organisation in defence and impressive handling skills to win their match against Ripley and draw against St. Edmund's. The Lions improved their positioning as the afternoon developed and showed some strong running, recording two draws.

Well done to all who braved the cold conditions and played so well.

What Parents Need to Know about HiPal

HiPal is a trending social media app which turns phones into walkie-talkies, allowing people to have voice conversations with friends or strangers. There are two account options: one for users aged under 12 and one for those aged 12 or above. The former has fewer features and limits interaction with strangers; enabling use of the walkie-talkie feature or photo sharing with friends and family only. The 12+ accounts offer more options, including adding strangers as friends, sharing photos and videos publicly, sending private messages and holding voice chats with strangers as well as friends.

In the guide, you'll find tips on a number of potential risks such as contact with strangers, dangerous challenges and intrusive features.

Congratulations to pupils for making it through their first full week back this term. Particularly to our Year 11’s who have worked hard this week to complete their mock exams. January can be a bleak month making it sometimes difficult to summon enthusiasm, yet I have noticed a real sense of camaraderie amongst the students and for that they should be congratulated.

I hope that ‘Dress Wacky for Wellbeing’ taking place on Monday 23rd January will be an opportunity to bring a bit of colour and fun to the pupils’ school week.

The Year 9 Mental Health Ambassadors will be speaking to the pupils about the motivation and purpose behind the day next week, but broadly it is an opportunity to express themselves through their clothing and appearance in as wacky a way as possible without the concerns of wearing the ‘right’ or ‘cool’ thing.

Each section of the school will also will have a workshop or presentation about the concept of self-esteem.

Of course there is also an opportunity for parents to boost their wellbeing by attending our Forest Bathing Meditative workshop. There are still a number of places available, so please contact me if you are interested in taking part in this wonderful opportunity.

Have a restorative weekend.

Mrs Douglas

Please can we remind all pupils to bring a suitable coat to school (and preferably to actually wear it when outside if it's cold or very wet).

We're finding in the medical room that many pupils are not bringing a water bottle to school - please be aware that a named water bottle is part of the uniform code and should be brought to school by all pupils.  Drinking sufficient water is so important for good health. Your body is made up of 60% water!

In the UK, guidance states we should drink 6 to 8 glasses of water/fluid per day (approx 1.2 litres).

Here's a few good reasons why we should all ensure we are drinking enough water (good news for parents tackling "Dry January"!):

  • It's good for your mind
  • It significantly affects energy levels and brain function
  • It helps maximise Physical Performance
  • It can keep your kidneys healthy
  • It may prevent and treat headaches
  • It keeps things moving (critical for digestion and avoiding constipation)
  • It improves your complexion

Have a healthy, hydrated weekend!

Senior School Optional Hoodie

The Senior School hoodies have redesigned by members of the School Council and the finished product can be seen above.  They have done a fantastic job at putting this design together and now finally getting to see the finished product.

This new hoodie is available from Stevenson's on their website: https://www.stevensons.co.uk/.  There is also the option to have your child's initials printed onto the front of the hoodie for a slight additional cost, something we would advise to avoid mixing up tops with other pupils. This hoodie is not an essential item of School uniform, so there is no expectation for pupils to have it.

If you wish to see the sample, please pop into the Main Office to see me and have a look at the new hoodie.
