A Message from Mrs Knox

We have come to the end of an action packed term and I know the whole School community is looking forward to a well earned rest. The School looked extra wonderful yesterday with staff and pupils dressed in a wonderful array of Christmas jumpers. As the term draws to a close, it is with humility and gratitude that I both look back on the term and, with anticipation, look forward to the holidays and next term! I am sure that pupils and parents would like to join me in thanking all of the staff and Governors at Duke of Kent School for their tremendous hard work and commitment to the pupils. I, too, would like to congratulate the pupils on a fantastic term of learning and hard work. I wish everyone much joy and happiness during this holiday season – may we all be safe and keep healthy. Merry Christmas or Season’s Greetings to everyone! Enjoy the turkey, the mince pies, the biscuits and sweets and, best of all, the lights and carols! See you in January 2023.

Prep Christmas Fayre

On Monday, our final week of term kicked off in glittering style with the Prep School Christmas Fayre. Having not had families able to attend this annual event since 2019, we were delighted to welcome so many of you into the Old Hall. The Year 3s and 4s proved to be very able stallholders, dealing with customers politely and handling money in a sensible manner. Their array of crafts (tree decorations, snow globes and sock snowmen, to name a few) - which they'd spent the past 6 weeks making in Forest School and Endeavour lessons - were most impressive and sold out in record time. The games designed and constructed by Years 5 and 6 were also hugely popular. Given that most involved throwing challenges, it was quite remarkable how unique each one managed to be. Here, too, pupils showed care for their Pre-prep 'customers' taking time to explain the rules and help them with their attempts. In all, the Fayre raised a fantastic £626, which will be shared amongst our School charities - British Red Cross Ukraine Appeal and Cancer Research UK. Well done, Prep School!

Pre-prep Nativity

All of the Pre-prep children took to the stage on Tuesday and wowed the audience with their performance of 'Baarmy Bethlehem, a creative take on the traditional Christmas Nativity. It was a magical atmosphere with so many family members there to watch, and we couldn't have been more proud of how they did. As well as entertaining you all, this really is a lovely opportunity for the children to experience being in the spotlight, and I am just thrilled they were able to do justice to the enormous amount of preparation that had gone before, behind the scenes.

I can't possibly single out individuals, but there's no doubt the 'Party Sheep' brought fantastic comic timing to their roles, and the boys who sang to Mary and Joseph were exceptional. As ever, the Pre-prep staff have been instrumental in bringing all the elements of the show together, working hard on costumes, lines and songs, and of course Mr Rye and Lisa Lee deserve special mention for their sensitive encouragement and guidance (of the staff as well as the pupils!). What a wonderful team effort.

The Carol Service

Wednesday evening saw our traditional school Carol Service, held once again at the pretty St Nicolas Church in Cranleigh. A Christmas feeling was certainly in the air as a light frost gently dusted the grass around the church and hats, scarves and gloves were adorned by the merry congregation. Led by ex-singing teacher at the school Rev. Tim Clifford Hill with an address by one of our parents Claire Oxborough, it was a wonderful and entertaining evening of carols, prayers and extra-special lighting effects!

I am proud to report our choirs were spectacular! Our young Year 2 singers nailed their Nativity song. (With no rehearsal!), the Junior Chamber Choir brought some serious emotion to the party with their rendition of 'When A Child is Born', The Years 7 and 8 choir sang in beautiful harmony for their lovely version of the modern carol 'Born on Christmas Day' and the Years 9 to 11 choir hit all the right the notes in their 4-part harmony version of 'Angels from the Realms of Glory'.

Congratulations are due to Eddie C in Year 7 for his gorgeous solo verse in 'Once in Royal David's City' and to James B in Year 9 for his heavenly solo in 'O' Little Town of Bethlehem'. Our readers were also fab - George F in Year 2, Millie W in Year 5, Charlie N and Maddie I in Year 11 and the Year 6 House Captains Harry L, Arthur H and Penny A who led the prayers.

Well done to our wonderful Brass group, Tildy C, Eddie C, Henry S and George S, led by Mr Nash, entertained us with entrance carols as people came into the church.

Special mention must also be made of Ruby W in Year 5 who stepped in with 5 minute's notice to sing a solo line in the Junior Choir. Chamber Choir piece as poor Lola was ill. Well done Ruby!

Many thanks to the amazing music staff who played and conducted on the night: Mr Forrester, Miss Barnes, Mr Kaye and Mr Nash.

The Prep School Concert

For many of us Christmas really begins at school on the first Friday of December when traditionally the Prep School holds its annual Christmas Concert. Christmas spirit fills the PA Hall every year as the performers and the audience don their Christmas jumpers, reindeer antlers and Santa hats.

I am proud to report this year the tradition was fiercely upheld! There was a wonderfully eclectic mix of performances from guitars to violins, clarinets to drums, pianos to ukuleles. The PADoK singers made a guest appearance and sung beautifully, bringing a sparkle to the event that was matched by the joyful playing and singing of our wonderful Prep pupils, who once again rose to the occasion and dealt with nerves and last minute hitches with relaxed professionalism and confidence that bodes well for the future! All the children performed brilliantly and deserve big, Christmas sized congratulations. A huge thank you is due as well to Mr Kaye and Mr Forrester for their work before and on the night.

The House Bake Off

On Tuesday, the two Prep and two Senior finalists met to battle it out for the Bake Off crowns. However, it would be a tough challenge to impress the prestigious judging panel Tony, one of our school chefs, Mr Seeley and we were privileged to welcome back former Great British Bake Off finalist Steven Carter-Bailey.

Because of the calibre of the judging panel, the brief was a huge step up from the previous rounds! The finalists were challenged to create 8 Christmas-themed fairy cakes. However, there was a catch! They had to follow the same recipe for their bake before unleashing their imagination to decorate their cakes as creatively as possible. What each of the finalists presented was exceptional, and the judging panel was thoroughly impressed. Congratulations to Oliver T (Buzzard) and Eva L  (Buzzard), who won their finals. Commiserations to Manon A ( Kestrel) and Edie H (Kestrel). They should all be proud of their efforts and the joyous atmosphere they formed while baking. There were 56 entries this year, so it is an impressive achievement to reach the final!

All the pupils who entered this year’s Bake Off earned 3 House points and with the finals concluded, the points from both competitions have been calculated and the overall positions have been decided:

1st Buzzard - 245 House points

2nd Kestrel - 193 House points

3rd Peregrine - 174 House points

4th Kestrel - 135 House points

Firstly, I must congratulate all of Prep and Pre-prep pupils on what has been a wonderfully productive and fulfilling term. It seems barely moments ago we were preparing for their return in September and here we are with Christmas nearly upon us, reflecting on just how much has been tackled, experienced, achieved and enjoyed. The Final Assembly was an opportunity to do just that, with pupils deservedly recognised for having attained the highest grades in their Attitude to Learning all term, or for having improved their grades the most as the term has gone on. Those who have earned the most stars for hard work and effort, or the most diamonds for kindness and helpfulness received Stellar and Ambassador Awards, respectively, as well. Of course, not everyone receives a prize, but I really do hope all the children will recognise in themselves how much progress they have made in so many different areas, both academically and pastorally.

Christmas certainly felt like it began with the Prep Concert last Friday, and I'd like to pay tribute to all performers. For many it was their first time playing for an audience. This alone is a great achievement, and no doubt will help boost their confidence for future performances to come. Congratulations are also due to the readers, Junior Choir, and Year 2 singers who dealt superbly with any nerves performing in the church - perhaps my favourite event of the year, when our whole community comes together in such atmospheric, beautiful surroundings in anticipation of Christmas. I must also mention those who may, through illness, have missed out on some of these exciting events; in most cases the culmination of weeks of practice. They will, undoubtedly, get to experience these things again another year, but for now they can feel proud to have participated and been an important part in preparations.

I hope the children have a magical Christmas, and that they - and you all - enjoy plenty of restful time amongst family.

Reading Certificates:

Gold for Ben W

Mr Wright

A busy week draws the term to a end as the cold weather begins to close in. A special mention this week must go to the Year 11 GCSE Art pupils who completed their Mock Art Exams on Monday and Tuesday, working with independent determination and producing some outstanding results.

Wednesday's Choir Service was a joyful experience in which the school choirs excelled. It was a credit to the pupils that in such a big arena the readings and songs were delivered with gusto and clarity. Thursday saw festive outfits across the year groups as well as a fantastic Christmas lunch and celebrations in the afternoon.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all those in the wider school community a restful and enjoyable Christmas break. There has certainly been no shortage of endeavour and application from the pupils this year and I do hope they are as proud of their efforts as we are.

Senior House Hockey

On Tuesday afternoon, all Senior girls in Years 9, 10 and 11 took part in the House Hockey Competition. There was a great standard of play from all girls with some great match ups between teams. Hawk came in 4th with 2 goals scored by Pippa S and Abi W in their final against Buzzard. There was some great defending from the rest of the team too. Buzzard came 3rd beating Hawk by only one goal. Rose S scored 2 of their 3 goals with Issy P scoring the final goals, securing the win for the team. It was a very tight final between Peregrine and Kestrel, with the score being 1-1 at full time. Kestrel played some fantastic hockey throughout the afternoon with great passing and goals from Isla B and Ava W in particular. The final game then went to penalty shuffles with Peregrine coming out with the win. There were some amazing saves by our goalkeepers Fleur S and Jaz K, and some great goals from Maddie I and Jess I. At the end of the games prizes were given out for team morale, with the winners being: Issy P, Josie B, Fleur S, and Jas K, and for effort with the winners being: Tabi S-B, Rose S, Matty B, Ava W, Alex K, Frankie M, Lucy M, Maddie I, and Macy B. It was a great afternoon with some great quality hockey from all and most importantly a wonderful atmosphere. Well done Peregrine for coming out on top!

Years 7 and 8 House Hockey

On Wednesday afternoon, all the girls in Years 7 and 8 were involved in House Hockey! It was a very sunny but very cold afternoon so it was important to have a quick change over of any subs and keep the girls moving! Each game was very exciting with goals galore! Due to the small numbers of girls in some of the houses, each house played with another house for each match meaning after 3 matches they had played in all possible combinations and it was time for the results! The winners of the competition were Kestrel with 3 out of 3 wins in their matches and then it was a tie with all other houses on 7 points! It went down to goal difference with Buzzard scoring the most amount of goals meaning they came in 2nd place! Hawk and Peregrine could not be split on points or goals so came in joint 3rd place! A wonderful afternoon of hockey to top off a great term of sport. Well done to all the girls involved for their efforts and positive spirit!

What Parents Need to Know about Social Media & Mental Health

An estimated one-third of children have a social media account, so it’s important that trusted adults know what content young people are consuming, what they’re posting and the interactions they’re having. On social media, it can be easy to go down a rabbit hole that isn’t beneficial to our wellbeing. As platforms grapple with managing ‘legal but harmful’ content, lives are being impacted – sometimes to tragic effect. We might be daunted by the scale of the tech giants and their content which enthrals young people, but we can still help children to be mindful of their mental wellness: recognising when something isn’t OK … and knowing what to do about content that upsets them.

In the guide, you'll find tips such as how to hide content, setting daily limits and discussing what children have seen online.

As we reach the end of term, Christmas spirits and excitement are high but so are illness and fatigue levels. The school holidays are a great time to take a break from studies and socialise; they are also a great time to try and slow down and take a break from worries about schoolwork, friendships, deadlines and timetables.

The Christmas break is, understandably, a busy time with many engagements and events to fit in but it is so important to carve out some time for self.

What is an exciting and enjoyable period for most can also be a lonely or overwhelming time for others. Particularly those who have been bereaved and facing their first Christmas without a loved one, or those that will be spending it away from other loved members of their family - or even those who are spending it with people whom they have difficult relationships.

I would encourage everybody to take some time to consider those whose Christmas may not be so jolly and check in with others who may be struggling over this period.

Also, to take time to be kind to yourselves  - these guides may be helpful in surviving the season emotionally.

I do wish everyone a wonderful and well Christmas!

Mrs Douglas

Further to the email earlier this week with information from Surrey County Council, please be vigilant for winter viral or bacterial infections.  Ring 111 or contact your GP if you're concerned and not sure what to do for the best.

A last reminder to parents of pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9, that Nasal Flu Immunisations are on offer at school on the first Friday of the Spring Term at School (6th January) - the "E consent" portal closes at 4pm on Tuesday 3rd January if you want your child to be involved.

We wish all our senior skiers (and the staff) a fantastic time in Austria next week.  A final reminder that all pupils with a prescribed inhaler are expected to carry them at all times during the trip, as the cold weather and exercise can exacerbate symptoms.  Good luck to Mr Monk and Mr Garrood who are deputising as Matrons for the trip!

Well that's it, it's been a hugely busy term, and all pupils and staff (and parents!) deserve a fantastic Christmas break, with time to rest and recover for the New Year ahead.  Have a wonderful holiday everyone.

PADoK – Duke of Kent Singers

Duke of Kent Singers performed at the Prep School Christmas Concert on Friday evening.  We sang “Somewhere Only We Know” and it was a joy to sing to an audience after working on the song this term.  Thank you to Mr Kaye for accompanying us on the piano and for Mr Rye for conducting and leading us so brilliantly.

Merry Christmas everyone! It was lovely to see those who could make it this morning for a song and a cuppa.  We so enjoyed singing Fairytale in New York and Hey Jude  I think Mr Rye was having fun too despite the ‘Bah Humbug’ hat and lovely to be able to thank him properly from us all.  Thank you for my gift! You really didn’t need to at all, the singing group is a joy.

PADoK Walk

A small group of us met for a lovely march around Pitch Hill on Friday for the last PADoK walk this term.  We look forward to many more in 2023.

PADoK Running Club

With the cold sports season upon us we have added skiing focus in our exercises as skiing and running use remarkably similar muscle groups. That has meant A LOT of squats. Wall squats, goblet squats, single leg squats, box jump squats and side squat jumps. All this focus on the rear is to build ballistic power for running propelling us forwards and up to run efficiently and in skiing giving stamina and with correct technique and strength we gain knee control to prevent ACL knee injury’s.

The pictures show our brilliant run group pushing against each other to build the forward lean position and some marching soldier drills to help build traction for more run propulsion.

All are welcome this week, and again we will restart with mat work to focus on core strength basic techniques from the first session back next term.

Wishing you a merry Christmas and plenty of sunny winter runs:)

Senior School Optional Hoodie

The Senior School hoodies have redesigned by members of the School Council and the finished product can be seen above.  They have done a fantastic job at putting this design together and now finally getting to see the finished product.

This new hoodie is available from Stevenson's on their website: https://www.stevensons.co.uk/.  There is also the option to have your child's initials printed onto the front of the hoodie for a slight additional cost, something we would advise to avoid mixing up tops with other pupils. This hoodie is not an essential item of School uniform, so there is no expectation for pupils to have it.

If you wish to see the sample, please pop into the Main Office to see me and have a look at the new hoodie.
