A Message from Mrs Knox

Another busy week as we run up to a well earned half term. I am sure the children will have mentioned our wood sculptor and the beautiful animals he has carved. They will now take pride of place in the School grounds. I have to say the incredible array of cakes for our first round of Bake Off was a sight to behold and the smell of sugar wafted gently through the Old Hall throughout the day! Good luck to those pupils selected to bake in the next round. For those of you who dropped into our parent events this week, I hope you found them useful. Please do keep an eye out for further parent events next half of term. Finally, our congratulations to the Green family and their gorgeous daughter Frankie!

Visiting Speaker, Elliot Giles

On Friday afternoon, we were absolutely delighted to welcome Elliot Giles to Duke of Kent School. Elliot is a professional athlete, specialising in 800m, and completes regularly at international events. He is an 8 time British Champion and won a bronze medal at the European Championships in 2016. Elliot has been to the Rio and Tokyo Olympics too! He did a fantastic talk on his experiences so far in his sporting career, including the challenges, injuries, achievements and much much more. All pupils were invited to the talk at lunch time and it was incredible to see over 50 pupils ranging from Years 3-11 in attendance asking some fabulous questions. After the talk, selected students in Years 7 & 8 had the chance to take part in an athletics session with Elliot. He took the pupils through some of his favourite warm up activities and spoke to them about the importance of technique when running. Elliot commented on the wonderful behaviour of our pupils and enjoyed signing water bottles and chatting to them after the session. Thank you so much for joining us for the afternoon Elliot, it was a hugely inspirational visit!

Artist in Residence

Over the last week the Art and Design Department have had the pleasure of working alongside chainsaw sculptor Mike Jones. Our pupils, although not able to get too hands-on with this process for obvious reasons, have enjoyed watching Mike at work. They have been particularly impressed with the speed and accuracy with which he works. Pupils had the opportunity for a Q&A session between sculptures, asking Mike about his working process, where he outlined his thoughts on subtractive sculpture and introduced us to his biggest chainsaw which towered over even the tallest of our Year 9 pupils! Pupils and staff alike were particularly impressed to hear that Mike takes commissions for pet portraits such is the accuracy with which he works.

You will be able to see the fruits of Mike's labours around the site over the next few weeks. I believe Pre Prep have already bagged a piece to go outside their entrance! If you would like to see more of Mike's work please follow this link to his website.

House Bake Off

The first round of the Duke of Kent School Bake Off kicked off the week with an influx of impressive baked goods. The competition in the first round was fierce, with over 53 entries from students across the Prep and Senior schools. The House Leaders and House Captains had the challenging (and tasty!) task of sampling all of the cakes and bakes brought in. They then had to decide which entries would progress through to the next round, which will take place after half term. All students who took part should be proud of what they accomplished, and by taking part, they earned 3 House points. During break time, the students held a bake sale which raised £300 for Cancer Research UK and the British Red Cross Ukraine Appeal.

Congratulations to the pupils through to the semi-final:

Buzzard: Prep - Oliver T, Senior - Eva L

Hawk: Prep - Layla B, Senior - Esme P

Kestrel: Prep - Manon A, Senior - Edie H

Peregrine: Prep - Penny A, Senior - Fleur S and Helena K

And just like that, 6 weeks have flown by...but what an amazing amount has been achieved! Those who arrived, somewhat tentatively as newcomers in early September, are already feeling part of the old guard, fully at home in their surroundings and amongst now-familiar faces. We've had some wonderful assemblies - from Years 4 and 5, visiting speakers (including the more silent, prickly type), House competitions, matches, adventures in the forest, culinary delights, an array of trips and far more besides. This week, we were treated to our first pupil-led Talk of the year, thanks to Ben W and Thibaut J in Year 6, who spoke most entertainingly about their love of books. Their relaxed, comical, but also informative style set an excellent example for others to follow, and we look forward to Talks on a variety of topics after half term. Year 4 also experienced an exciting first this week - sharing their debut Endeavour Award projects with their classmates, the theme of 'Heritage' eliciting presentations on an array of historical figures, from Elvis Presley to Mary Anning! Also in Prep School, there's been much discovery about the human body this week in Science lessons: Year 3 were using purple disclosing tablets to reveal the hidden plaque on their teeth and were relieved to see how clean they managed to get them after a thorough brushing; Year 5 were investigating how exercise affects one's pulse; and Year 6 learned just how many positive microbes there are in food, and in what ways they  help our gut stay healthy.

In Pre-prep, Year 2 have now finished their sun-catcher jellyfish, which now take pride of place on their classroom window, and the Nursery children have begun to turn their attention to Halloween, learning about bats, autumn and frothing pumpkins! In STEAM club, this week's activity also took a spooky turn, as the children looked at spiders' webs to understand how they construct them. Using marshmallows and cocktail sticks, they then created their own spider web in groups, demonstrating great engineering and team work skills! Lastly, congratulations to Year 1, who made a stop-motion animated film last week about their September trip to Arundel Castle. The lovely people at Arundel loved it so much they shared it on their instagram feed!

Lastly, if your child/ren would like to tackle an educational project over the half term break, they will find an assignment posted in their Google Form Classroom with a range of suggestions and links for inspiration. This is entirely optional, but those who do produce something will have the opportunity to share it with the Prep School in our first assembly back.

I hope the children all have a well earned rest (along with plenty of fun!) over half term.

Mr Wright

Stars of the Week

Nursery: Roman N for brilliant all round progress, especially good listening and good levels of communication. Well done!

Reception: Ali S for displaying such a great attitude to learning, particularly in phonics and reading.

Year 1: Olivia P for her enthusiasm towards the artist in residence and her classwork.

Year 2: Willow B for incredible focus and perseverance in Maths lessons.

George F for displaying impressive sportsmanship at playtimes.

Mrs Henry

The week started with much excitement as the annual School Bake Off hit new heights with the Meetings Room inundated with baked goods of an incredibly high standard. The bake sales that ensued were an undoubted treat for all students at Monday morning breaktime! Year 11 also continued their individual Mock interviews on Monday with the majority of the year group having now attended. They will all receive useful feedback regarding their body language, eye contact, answering tips and interview strategies and I am sure this will stand them in good stead for job and college interviews of the future.

On Tuesday the Senior School Council met to discuss the learning and teaching structure of the senior school as they contribute their thoughts towards our current curriculum review. On Thursday we hosted a GCSE Options evening in the PA Hall for parents and pupils in Year 9 to see the range of subjects on offer and help their children make the right decision for them, whilst on Friday Year 8 were heading off to the Tillingbourne River to test for downstream changes at two different sites (whilst hopefully not getting too wet!).

A busy half-term draws to a close having seen many successes for the pupils across the Senior School age range. I wish you all the best for an enjoyable break.

Netball: U14/15 A v. Frensham Heights

On Tuesday afternoon the U14/15 Netball team played Frensham Heights at home. This was a tough match with both teams being exceptionally strong. The team finished the first quarter really well with a 2-2 score giving the players an insight to how close this match was going to be. The team lost their nerve in the second quarter but after a team talk and re focusing what we needed to do and where we needed to tighten up on zoning and placing the ball there was a quick turnaround. At half time the score was 3-6 to Frensham.

In the second half the girls worked really hard to close the space down and the defence started making great interceptions and well-timed moves to close off th options to Frensham, well done Abi W, Helena K and Ava W. The final quarter was so close, Alex K honed in her shooting skills and scored some fantastic long shots supported by Fleur S and Esme P and after a well fought match, the final score was 12-10 to Frensham. It was a fantastic match and every player gave 100% on the court, you should all be so proud of your performances, I certainly am!

Hockey: U13 A v. Dorset House

On Wednesday afternoon, the U13A team welcomed Dorset House to our Wilsons' Pitch for their last hockey game before the half term break. It was a tight match from the very first minute with both teams displaying some good dribbling and passing skills. Dorset House went 1-0 up with a well worked goal and a tap in on the back post but this just gave the girls even more determination to come back and within minutes Alice B had leveled the scores at 1-1 with a tidy finish from the edge of the D. The match continued to be end to end with chances for both teams and some impeccable tackling from Clara H-S to keep Dorset House from scoring. At the end of the first half, Tildy C, Alice B and Mercy M linked up beautiful to score a second goal and put the U13A into the lead. After the half time team talk, the girls went back out onto pitch and gave it everything. Dorset House managed to get through our defence at last and equalised to make it 2-2 with over 10 minutes left to play. It was a thriller end with both teams having chances to take the win but the match ended with a very well deserved draw! It was fantastic to see the girls apply themselves so brilliantly in the match. Well done to Clara H-S for being awarded a very well deserved girl of the game!

Years 5 and 6 Mixed House Netball

On Wednesday afternoon year 5 and 6 boys and girls took to the court to play house netball. All of the children played really well, and the boys and girls worked well together in order to score goals and defend their goals. There were many close matches, with just one goal being the difference between a win and a loss. The enthusiasm and communication between team members was great, with them working together to see who would be best in each position and subbing on and off without complaints. There was great support from parents and all enjoyed the afternoon. Goals were scored from all teams and it was a really close afternoon, with results coming down to goal difference. Buzzard were the overall champions, having won all three of their matches. Well done to all involved, it was a wonderful afternoon!

Prep School House Swimming Gala

All Prep School pupils were able to take part in the House Swimming Gala on Monday. It was a fantastically noisy and exciting gala in which all the swimmers did their very best for their houses. The standard of swimming was great and the pupils' ability to cope with the pressure of competition was wonderful to see. The amazing support from pupils and parents spurred each swimmer on wonderfully. The final results were:

1st - Hawk

2nd - Buzzard

3rd - Kestrel

4th - Peregrine

Well done to all who took part and thank you parents for your support.

Mr Herbert

Boys' Football: U14 v. Kingswood House

This Tuesday, the U14A team travelled to Kingswood House for their final football match before half term. Duke of Kent School, struggled to adapt to the pitch at the start of the match with a few bobbles and big down hill/up hill slope. Then some good play from Moxon K won Duke of Kent School a penalty which he then took and scored, from this the team was able to put some lovely quick passing moves together; showing off some great footwork, leading to a few more well taken goals before halftime. In the second half, the team played very solid defensively and created a couple of really good goals scoring opportunities. Tom B had a great run and took a fantastic shot from the edge of the area to find the opposite top corner, which capped off a great team performance in tough playing conditions. Well played to everyone involved.

Mr Orme

Boys' Football: U12/13 v. St. Edmund's

On Wednesday, the U12/13 E team made the journey to St. Edmund's for their final match before half term. An evenly contested game to start, both teams working hard to win the ball back to go on the attack. St. Edmund's scored a couple of goals just before half time, but spirits were high as Duke of Kent School were able to create a few chances. In the second half, Duke of Kent School started fantastically being on the front foot and got a well deserved goal for their efforts from the player of the match Jack P. Well played to everyone involved.

Mr Orme

Today, the brand-new House emblems were unveiled to all of the pupils. Each emblem is based on a design created by a student and includes a reference to the House’s previous name. Moving forward, these emblems will be an ever-present element of House competitions and will mark a historic moment for the School.

At the end of the first half term, it is very tight between the 4 Houses. Hawk currently has the lead, with a bit of distance between Buzzard and Peregrine in 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Kestrel is not out of the race yet, and with points from several ongoing events yet to be added, their fortunes could soon change. You can follow this weblink (Autumn Term leaderboard) to see the most up-to-date totals.

What Parents Need to Know about BeReal

BeReal is the latest trending social media app. The concept is that people see others in their authentic day-to-day lives, sharing candid photos without editing or applying filters. Each day at a random time, users are simultaneously notified to take a photo of what they’re doing at that exact moment. The two-minute window to submit an image means there’s no time to select a particularly glamorous or exciting activity. BeReal shares two pictures: a selfie, and an image of the immediate surroundings. Users can only view and react to their friends’ photos once they upload their own.

In the guide, you'll find tips on a number of potential risks such as strangers, location sharing and visible personal data.

This week began with a message from all the staff to the pupils that ‘how they feel matters’. Staff from teachers, to cleaners, to catering staff, to support and office staff donned yellow clothing and accessories to demonstrate their support for the mental health of the pupils in celebration of World Mental Health Day. There was an impressive array of sunshine shades to bring some colour to what started as a dark grey rainy, Monday morning. In a wonderful analogy, the weather soon changed to beautiful sunshine by late morning, demonstrating that like the weather, our feelings are changeable and don’t last forever. If we are struggling with an emotion in a moment, we should retain that it will change to something else before long.

We chose to support Young Minds, Hello Yellow campaign as a fun way to draw attention to the difficulties young people may be having with their mental health, and a reminder that they are not alone.I hope that some of the pupils enjoyed the little messages of support hidden in their books by their teachers.

On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of welcoming some of the Wellbeing leads from schools in our local area as part of the Wellbeing Forum created last year. It was a lovely opportunity for us all to share our ideas and experiences and consider new strategies for supporting pupils, parents and staff wellbeing in the communities of our own schools.

Yesterday, Mrs Instone, the Learning Development Team and myself were delighted to be able to introduce our teams and the role we play within School. I hope this was insightful for those that attended. It was lovely to see some familiar faces as well as meeting some of the parents newer to our community. We sincerely hope that some of you are able to continue to forge links between one another who may have similar diagnoses or concerns for your children and benefit from sharing your experiences and the knowledge that you are not alone.

As we reach the end of this busy week, I wish you all a restful and restorative half term break. Below is a link to a fantastic resource about ‘Rethinking Rest’ aimed at adults as well as children, which was part of The World Mental Health Foundation’s resources for World Mental Health Day. It is worth a look if you are feeling over-stretched, overwhelmed, over-tired or under-supported.

Mrs Douglas

Yesterday Mrs Sarjant enjoyed taking a PSHE lesson with Year 4 about Bacteria and Viruses.  We learned a little about our bodies' various defence mechanisms and immune systems, and the importance of good hand hygiene (much fun was had with an experiment using some glowing gel!).  We continue to urge all pupils and staff to perform regular and thorough hand hygiene at school as we head towards the winter months when germs will no doubt be circulating.

Talking of germs...For pupils in Years 7, 8, and 9, we have now been informed that the nasal flu immunisation will be offered at school on Friday 6th January 2023.  Mrs Sarjant will be in touch with details on how to complete your parental "E Consent" for this as soon as the link is sent through from the Immunisations Team - keep an eye on your emails.

One of the most important factors in the efficacy of our immune system is sleep.   Consistent sleep strengthens the immune system, allowing for balanced and effective immune function.  Therefore, the School Nurses wish you all a restful and therapeutic half term break.  Enjoy the chance for a few lie-ins, and some good quality sleep to top up your immune system!

Bingo Night – Friday 7th October

On Friday we transformed the dining room into a bingo hall, the tables were set and at 8.30 the balls started rolling and dabbers were at the ready!  Tara was a fabulous bingo caller with her able assistant Caroline!   Some might have confused them with professionals!

There were prizes a plenty as we played five games and on each one there was a prize for a line and then a bigger prize for a full house.  We held a bingo quiz which was won by the teacher table and then finished the evening with a few rounds of Higher or Lower with a deck of giant playing cards!

There was a great atmosphere so thank you to all parents and teachers who came to support the event.

Thanks go to Louise, Tara and Michelle for organising, Caroline, Alyssa, Polly and Sue for helping set up and Mr Rye for the PA system.  Huge thanks to all those who helped clear up at the end, it was a slick machine!

PADoK Second Hand Uniform Shop

We are planning on making improvements to the shop over the next year or so.  In the meantime, we were wondering if any of the parent community might be help us with a few items.  We are in need of more storage so does anyone have any 65 litre plastic storage boxes with lids.

If you do have any of the above then please email padok@dokschool.org.

Thank you in advance.

Duke of Kent School Singers

Another wonderful turn out for singing this week of past and present parents, despite illness, meetings and assemblies. Thank you so much for coming!

We sang a couple of fun warm ups and ran through our version of  ‘I Can See Clearly Now’ which is sounding great! We also talked through various ideas for a Christmas song that we would have fun singing. Sadly Shakin’ Stevens didn’t make the cut but with Mr Rye’s guidance we have decided to explore Lily Allen’s version of ‘Somewhere Only We Know’, a version offering lots of lovely harmonies for us to enjoy having a go at.

Please do keep coming and enjoy singing together. It is such a wonderful uplifting session and our main focus is on those 40 minutes we spend together week on week and enjoying the sing song. There is no pressure whatsoever to perform anywhere.

We look forward to seeing everyone again after half term and *welcome new singers at any point.* Come along whenever you fancy it, to listen and join in however you wish. Happy half term everyone ??

This is a very relaxed session, no pressure to perform but an opportunity to have a sing song and a laugh with a really friendly group. So whether you sing in a shower or studio, all are welcome to come and make Thursday mornings a bit more joyful!!!  Contact Cathy on rhodricathy@sky.com if you would like more information.

PADoK Running Technique – Friday morning 08.30 in Ness Hall

Running technique class resumed with aching legs for those in the London Marathon!

We were so pleased to hear of the excellent Running that Lynden (Year 1 dad) Small (Year 8 mum),  Charlie Hunt  (Years 6,9 and 11 dad) and ex bursar Chris Finill (who continues his marathon legacy) that our School running community achieved.

We focused on technique surrounding the pelvis stability in both lying and standing and learned how to mimic kangaroos bouncing around the sports hall

We will be here again on Friday morning progressing these techniques!

Hope to see you soon.  All welcome and little folk can accompany if you need.

PADoK Book Club – A Fatal Crossing by Tom Hindle

We wanted to read an old fashioned Who Dunnit and set the challenge to all that join us to send your guesses to Mrs Newman (claire@bluetreerecruits.co.uk) about who you think the Murderer is as you read the book and there will be prizes for those who guess who the killer is!  Join us at 8pm on Thursday 24th November by the roaring fire in the great hall with a glass of wine to chat about the book, which has been described to have 'A very clever plot and a final twist which will delight Agatha Christie fans. You'll love it.'

Senior School Optional Hoodie

The Senior School hoodies have redesigned by members of the School Council and the finished product can be seen above.  They have done a fantastic job at putting this design together and now finally getting to see the finished product.

This new hoodie is available from Stevenson's on their website: https://www.stevensons.co.uk/.  There is also the option to have your child's initials printed onto the front of the hoodie for a slight additional cost, something we would advise to avoid mixing up tops with other pupils. This hoodie is not an essential item of School uniform, so there is no expectation for pupils to have it.

If you wish to see the sample, please pop into the Main Office to see me and have a look at the new hoodie.
