A Message from Mrs Knox

Our first full week back at school has been an extremely busy one with trips, activities, rehearsals and matches now well underway. I enjoyed meeting our new Head Boy, Head Girl and Prefects as we started to talk about the year ahead and what they were each hoping to achieve. They had some great ideas and, to kick-start the year, have invited our Year 7s to a team building game of Capture the flag this lunchtime. Today, our Year 10s headed off on their Duke of Edinburgh hike and overnight camp with good cheer and good weather which bodes well for a positive experience. It was a pleasure meeting Prep and Pre-Prep parents last week and we look forward to welcoming Senior School parents next week for an introduction to the year. Our Book of Condolence is available to families in Old Hall if you wish to share a personal message. We have taken many opportunities this week during our assemblies and classes to talk about the Royal family with a number of moments of reflection. Monday 19th is being observed by the School as a Bank Holiday marking the final day of the period of national mourning, allowing us to pay our respects to Her Majesty and commemorate her reign. School resumes on Tuesday 20th.

Mrs Knox

Meet our new Heads of School

We take great pleasure in introducing our new Heads of School, Charlie N and Maddie I. Kind, compassionate and committed, we have no doubt they will excel as role models, making positive changes and serving as a conduit for any concerns or suggestions the student body has. The Head Boy/Head Girl election process is a rigorous undertaking, involving interviews, application forms and voting from students and staff alike, and it is testament to them that so many recognise they will be successful in such demanding roles. Well done Charlie and Maddie!

Mr Wilson

Meet our new members of staff

Nicola Rowley joins us from LVS Ascot where she taught English for 13 years. She has travelled extensively throughout Southern Africa where she studied and taught History and English. She enjoys sports and the theatre, and she is very excited to be teaching English and Geography this year.

Frankie Turnbull has joined the Mathematics Department. She has a 1st Class Degree from Oxford Brookes University, where she achieved the award for 'academic excellence' due to high performance. She has a keen interest in sports, and is therefore excited to be helping out with the Sports Department too.

Bethany Arnold has just finished her degree in Sports Science and Coaching from the University of Chichester and joins us as a graduate sports assistant for the year. She has trained and competed in many different sports and will be running a Karate club after School.

Alex Garrood is a former pupil who is spending this year supporting the Performing Arts Department as a theatre technician and recording studio assistant. Alex will also be working alongside the Maintenance Department. We are thrilled to have him back.

Year 10 Booth Museum Drawing Day

This week our new cohort of GCSE Art and Design pupils kicked off their studies with a drawing day at the Booth Museum. The museum is one of the South East's hidden gems. It houses the collection of Edward Booth, a Victorian gentleman whose ambition to collect an example of every species living in the British Isles has left a bizarre collection of skeletons, taxidermy and lepidopterous delights.

Pupils busied themselves responding to the collection through a variety of drawing and mixed media techniques. This resulted in some spectacularly individualised sketchbook pages, getting their GCSE Art work off to a fabulous start!

Mr Watson

Year 8 Art and DT Drawing Trip

Year 8 have begun this year's Art and Design Technology courses with a morning of investigative drawing of the architecture on Cranleigh High Street.

Pupils used a variety of arts based processes and media to respond to St. Nicholas Church and Cranleigh Hospital, one of the oldest buildings on the High Street. A particular highlight was drawing the internal architectural detail of St. Nicholas. This included a relief sculpture that inspired C.S. Lewis' Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland.

For the Design Technology focus pupils looked at the scale, proportion and layout of buildings along the High Street. At Cranleigh Medical Centre they considered a range of architectural features, including fixtures intended to keep the building cool in the summer. At the Arts Centre we admired the impressive layout and split-level exhibition space. Here we concentrated on architectural drawing and floor plans in order to investigate the concerns an architect might consider when designing a building.

Year 2 Trip to brighton Sea Life Centre

On Friday, Year 2 ventured down to Brighton's Sea Life Centre for a fun-packed day of exploring and learning! After we arrived in Brighton, we walked in the sun along the promenade, taking in the smells and sounds of the ocean.

When we arrived at the Centre, we had a quick snack before we split off into our groups to explore the aquarium. We were given question cards with scratch off answers which we tried to find around the Centre. The children were full of wonder and awe as they walked around the aquarium and really soaked up the opportunity to see different marine life up close. It was amazing to see how big and small some of the creatures were! Did you know that an Octopus can fit in very small holes, as long as they are bigger than the size of their beak?

The children particularly loved visiting the “humongous turtles” at feeding time and marvelled at the opportunity to stroke a starfish. We had a brilliant day at The Sea Life Centre and can't wait to continue learning about the mysteries and wonders of marine life!

“I liked the cute turtles” Georgia

“I liked it when we saw the baby sharks in the massive tank whilst we were eating lunch” George. D

Year 1 Trip to Arundel Castle

On Thursday Year 1 went to Arundel Castle. We were greeted at the castle gates by our guide Jane. Olivia P was struck by how amazing the castle looked. We immediately went to the education room where the children were able to explore weapons and look at armour. The children enjoyed dressing up especially wearing the chain mail vests. Next we went for a tour around the castle, we started in the armoury, Harry S liked the shining armour, the children enjoyed finding the portcullis and spotting the arrow loops. We went to the keep and climbed the winding stairs to look out from the battlements, Josh B loved this part the most. We went for a walk around the castle along the dry moat before stopping for lunch. After lunch we went to the Barbican and we saw the dungeon and learnt about how the prisoners would be sent there. Finally, we went for a walk around gardens. Year 1 had a lovely day out, asked lots of questions and learnt so much about our topic Knights and Castles.

A very warm welcome back to School to all our Prep and Pre-prep pupils. Whilst it was decidedly gloomy outside during our first week back, the children ensured the corridors and classrooms were filled with sunny smiles, chatter and endeavour. A highlight for me was coaching football with the Year 5 and 6 boys last Wednesday afternoon when the heavens truly opened. Despite a few interruptions - we were initially forced to shelter under the trees and then, when it came down even harder, made a dash for the pavilion - the moment it subsided, the soggy boys sprinted back out onto the field eager to resume play. It seemed a rather fitting allegory for what our School is all about. So, as the academic year gets well underway, I do hope all our pupils will get back on the metaphorical pitch no matter the weather and face every challenge with enthusiasm and determination. It was really lovely to see so many parents at our Information Meetings last week; I do hope they were informative, and gave you the chance to meet other parents in your class. If there are any questions remaining - and there no doubt will be - please don't hesitate to contact your Form teacher, or the Office, who will be happy to help. Enjoy the weekend.

Stars of the Week

Nursery: Humphrey G for his positive attitude throughout the school day, wonderful singing and for setting a good example to our new classmates.

Reception: Theodora J or settling in so well, trying new experiences with confidence and making so many new friends!

Year 1: Harry R for his positive start to the new year, both is attitude to learning and his respect for the classroom.

Year 2: Georgia C for settling in so beautifully to the Duke of Kent School.

Obie M for showing incredible resilience during challenging moments.

Mrs Henry

Whilst the weather has been rather mixed for our return to school it has nonetheless been heartwarming to see so many smiles on faces and hear stories of exciting summer adventures. A huge welcome in particular to our new starters. We continue to do all we can to ensure this is not a daunting experience and I have no doubt they will become comfortable, happy and integral parts of our school community.

As always it has proved a busy start, with Senior Production workshops already having taken place before term even started and the Year 7 trip to Sayers Croft taking place in the first week, an especially enjoyable trip where our new starters got the chance to work with their peers in a fun and relaxed environment. This week has seen an Art trip to the Booth Museum take place, as well as a DT trip to Cranleigh to study Architecture and the Year 10s setting off on their Duke of Edinburgh Expedition today. Straight back into the swing of things!

I wish you all the best for a successful and joyful term.

Mr Rye

Boys' Football: U16 A v. Box Hill

The U16 team travelled to Box Hill to play their first game of the season. Duke of Kent School started the game well with some positive play, although the long grass made it difficult to keep the ball moving as quickly as the U16 team would have liked. Chances were being created by the Duke of Kent School team but not taken. The breakthrough came from a good finish by Luke I. After the first goal was scored, Duke of Kent School dominated the game. A few errors from the opposition let our strikers in and suddenly the confidence and movement by the Duke of Kent School team increased significantly. Goals were being scored frequently with Tom H scoring six and one each for Charlie N and Leo H. With the score getting a little out of hand, the game was finished slightly early. This was a confidence building 11-0 victory. Well done to all who played.

Mr Herbert

Boys' Football: U14/15 v. Belmont

This Tuesday, the U14/15 B team played their first football match of the season against Belmont. The match was very evenly contested, in the first half with both teams having a few attacking opportunities. Duke of Kent School took the lead with a well finished goal from Henry Y on the counter-attack. Belmont played well after Duke of Kent School had scored and got a couple of goals just before half time. In the second half Duke of Kent School struggled to get going, James B showed fantastic energy throughout the match earning himself a merit. Well played to everyone involved.

Mr Orme

Boys' Football: U12/13 C v. Box Hill

On Wednesday 14th September, the U12/13 C team played Box Hill School at home in their opening game of the season. The boys got off to a flyer with a couple of goals within the first few minutes. The pressure on the opposition goal was constant, forcing the Box Hill goalkeeper into a number to brilliant saves. The Duke of Kent School team got their reward with another couple more goals just before half time. The team continued to play well in the second half, using both wings as their focus of attack. Another impressive half lead the team to a superb 8-0 win. Well done to the whole team

Mr Monk

Boys' Football: U12/13 v. Moon Hall

On Wednesday, the U12/13 E team played in their first football match all together against Moon Hall, with some of the team making their first sporting appearance for Duke of Kent School. It was a tough game for Duke of Kent School but the team worked hard throughout to do their best. On display there was some great goalkeeping from Robert S who made a countless number of important saves, Alex W who defended very well and helped to move the ball forward for the team and Harris H-H who was the workhorse in midfield helping the team in every way he could which was fantastic to see. Well played to everyone involved and keep up the hard working attitude.

Mr Orme

Boys' Football U12/13 D Team v. Moon Hall

This match was a magnificent show of grit and passion from our boys in Years 7 and 8. Up against strong opponents, Declan E was heroic in goal, time and again pulling off spectacular saves! The team kept their shape throughout, making it difficult for the opponents to break through and get a sight of goal. A shout out goes to Theo C for good sportsmanship as he explained to the unsighted referee that the ball had come off his leg last. Wilfred K, tireless in an advanced midfield position, followed up a shot that hit the post, rolled across the goal line before hitting the other post(!) with a terrific finish into the bottom corner from distance. I could name each and every player as I was so proud of them all. The opposition named Declan and Theo as their players of the match! Well done team!

Mr Allen

Boys' Football: U10/11 A, B and C v. Handcross Park

The U10/11 teams all travelled to Handcross Park on Wednesday afternoon. The C team played a triangular against the opposition's C & D team. The C team players worked extremely hard and were exhausted by the end of the afternoon. Unfortunately, they were not able to win either match but this was not for lack of trying. Alfie H played particularly well in goal with some good handling and positioning.

The B team played out an extremely exciting 0-0 draw and were unlucky not to gain their first victory. Henry W, playing his first game for Duke of Kent School, hit the post twice and was very unlucky not to score his first goal. All of the B team played well and showed an improvement in their positional awareness as the match progressed.

The A team won their first game of the season with a 1-0 victory courtesy of a first half strike by Henry O'B. All of the team showed great effort and energy throughout and should be proud of their performances. There were some excellent passages of play, good passing and some strong tackling from the Duke of Kent School team. Ben W made a couple of outstanding saves to keep his team in the match. This was a great start to the season! Well done to all three teams.

 Mr Herbert

Boys' Football: U8/9 v Kingswood House

The U8/9 football teams travelled to Kingsword House for their first matches of the term. The boys were extremely excited and performed incredibly well. The C team narrowly lost 4-3 but showed some good skills and determination.  Goals from Henry H (2) and Charlie S helped make the  match extremely close. The B team won 2-1 with both goals from Alex W. This was a very exciting match with the winning goal coming in the last minute of the second half. The A team played a great game winning 7-1 with goals from Alex J (4) and Oliver T (3). The boys passed the ball well and found great positions when looking for space. Well done to all who played and thank you for the fantastic support from the Duke of Kent School parents!

Mr Herbert

Girls' Hockey: U12/13 B v. Moon Hall College

On Wednesday afternoon, the U12/13B team were extremely excited for their first match of the year! They welcomed Moon Hall College to our Wilsons' Pitch for a game of hockey. It was a fantastic display of effort and determination from both sides with end to end play. The U12/13B team managed to get the breakthrough goal as Willow weaved her way through the defence to score a brilliant goal for the team. Moon Hall College continued to fight and managed to get a goal past Poppy F (GK) after multiple saves! Towards the latter stages of the match, the U12/13B team scored again resulting in a 2-1 win for the girls. It was a great game and the first time that a lot of the girls had ever taken part in a hockey match! Well done to everyone involved for your great enthusiasm and effort throughout the afternoon.

Miss Vickers

Netball: U10/11 v. Ripley Court

On Wednesday afternoon our U10/11 team played their first Netball match of the year against Ripley Court. The sun was shining and the girls were excited and nervous for their match. It took some time to settle and start to work as a team to work the ball down the court and they started to use the space well. In the final quarter the girls found their rhythm and were moving well. It was a brilliant start to the season, well done to you all!

Mrs Woolgar

Netball: U8/9 v. Ripley Court

On Thursday afternoon, the Year 3 & 4 girls played their first netball match of the term. They were absolutely buzzing to play and put the skills they had learnt over the last week into practice! The year groups were mixed up and spilt into 2 teams. Both teams performed fantastically well and the girls really enjoyed playing whilst their parents cheered them on. Team Miss Vickers took an early lead and then just couldn't stop scoring with Layla B, Charlotte P, Norah C and Ivy B all scoring goals for the team. The best bit about the match was the calm, accurate and quality passing across the court, in particular Mila S and Layla B working brilliantly together to create goal scoring opportunities. Meanwhile, team Miss Arnold were also having great success and working as a team to attack and defend. Well done to Florence A for her wonderful movement and to Seren G for scoring two goals! A huge well done to everyone in Year 3 & 4 for managing to win both matches!

What Parents Need to Know about Google Chromebook

Google Chromebooks were first introduced in 2011 as a budget-friendly alternative to Windows laptops. They have a cloud-based desktop operating system created by Google that performs internet-based tasks simply and quickly. Although primarily optimised for Google apps – such as Gmail and Google Drive – newer devices also support Android apps and offer a range of parental controls via the Google Family Link tool. Nonetheless, whilst these tools are comprehensive, there are some limitations which means there are a number of risks trusted adults should be aware of.

In the guide, you'll find tips on a number of potential risks such as addiction, malware and your child having access to the internet at all times.

Click on the link to find out more information about staying safe on "Google Chromebooks".

Mr Wyllie

This week, all of our new pupils were sorted into their new Houses, a very exciting moment for them! This was just in time for them to attend the first House meeting for the year. The Heads of House introduced themselves to the pupils and, along with the House Captains, issued everybody a shiny new badge! This badge can be worn by all the pupils and members of staff to show their allegiance to their House. The pupils were informed about all of the exciting events and competitions. The main events for this half term are:

  • Prep School House Draughts- first matches begin on 23rd September

  • Bake Off- First round and bake sale 10th October (more information to follow).

Next week, the Prep and Senior pupils will set the first quiz of the year. The House that collates the highest score will receive 100 House points, with every pupil who takes part earning an extra 3 House points. The pupils can also gain House points through the rewards they are awarded, with stars and merits worth 3 House points while a Values Award or Commendation is worth 15!

The race to be crowned House of the Year has officially begun!

Mr Gritton

Firstly, I’d like to welcome back our returning pupils and families and secondly to welcome those new to our school community. By now, you have had some time to adjust to the routine of school days, but I am aware that for many, both those that are new to the school and those who are returning from last term, it can be a nerve-wracking and anxiety-inducing experience. You are all experiencing change to some degree, whether that is a new teacher, topic, classmate, year group or school.

For those who have found the prospect of coming into school this week difficult, I want to say - well done! You are braver than perhaps you or others realise, and you should feel proud of yourself. That goes to parents too; it is not easy to send your children into a new environment and wait all day to see how they have fared.

Whilst there will likely still be some days where it feels difficult to breeze in through the doors without a care, there are some things you can help your child or yourself with to make this easier:

  1. Be prepared - get bags, books, pens etc. ready the night before.

  2. Get a good night’s sleep - allow yourself to be rested well as we are more able to manage our emotions this way.

  3. Eat well - having a good and nutritious breakfast before coming to school is equally as important for our energy levels as our emotional regulation.

  4. Check timetables - knowing where you are meant to be when can help alleviate that worry.

  5. One day at a time - try not to fixate on the whole term, assessments, tests that may be coming and instead consider managing each day as it comes until you feel ready to consider the whole. Look at the ground right in front of you before considering the hurdles further along the track - you’re less likely to trip before you get there.

  6. Gratitude lists - write down or think about things that you are looking forward to in the term or at weekends, evenings etc.

  7. Talk to someone - if you feel your worries about school are getting you down, remember you are not alone. Talk to a friend, parent or teacher.

Secondly, given recent events and the Queen’s funeral on Monday, I’m aware that for many people this is a time of grief. Many will be grieving the Queen as well as possibly finding the public mourning a trigger for their own personal bereavements. As a volunteer for Cruse Bereavement Support, I’d like to direct you to their website which offers advice on dealing with grief for the Queen and also offers an opportunity to add to the virtual Garden of Remembrance in the name of your own loved ones which is being sent to the Palace.

https://www.cruse.org.uk/

https://www.cruse.org.uk/grief-for-her-majesty-the-queen/

Pupils are also able to drop in and talk to me at Open Door Sessions weekly:-

Prep school - Monday - 12:30-1:00       Thursday- 10:00 - 10:20

Senior school - Monday -  10:20-10:40     Thursday - 1:00-1:30

Mrs Douglas

A huge well done to all our new pupils for settling in so quickly - especially those with medical conditions to cope with on top of adapting to a new school.   We welcome our new parents too.  Please do not hesitate to contact the school nurses at nurse@dokschool.org.uk if you have any health queries as the year progresses. (Lead School Nurse Chloe Sarjant works Mondays to Thursdays: csarjant@dokschool.org and Maya Garside: mgarside@dokschool.org works Thursdays and Fridays).

It's been so lovely to start a new school year without having to plan for mass Covid testing; we really are getting back to a normal school life!  Having said that, we will still be spreading the message of the importance of hand and respiratory hygiene, and ventilation this term as we head into cold and flu season.

Please can we ask parents of Years Reception through to 6 to complete your nasal flu immunisation consents as soon as possible.  Also, Year 8 parents for the HPV immunisations.  The immunisations' session will be on Friday 30th September (Year 8 to wear short sleeves that day please!).  Letters have been emailed out with full details, but can also be found in the parents area of the school website in "The Medical room".

Finally, we wish the Year ten pupils a safe and happy Duke of Edinburgh Expedition - we can't wait to hear about all your adventures!

Have a restful weekend,

The School Nurses

PADoK Book Club

We are delighted to give you the details of the book we will be reading this term in book club.  A date will be decided on later in the term for a meet up and discussion about the book while enjoying a glass of something together!  Happy reading….

Senior School Optional Hoodie

The Senior School hoodies have redesigned by members of the School Council and the finished product can be seen above.  They have done a fantastic job at putting this design together and now finally getting to see the finished product.

This new hoodie is available from Stevenson's on their website: https://www.stevensons.co.uk/.  There is also the option to have your child's initials printed onto the front of the hoodie for a slight additional cost, something we would advise to avoid mixing up tops with other pupils. This hoodie is not an essential item of School uniform, so there is no expectation for pupils to have it.

If you wish to see the sample, please pop into the Main Office to see me and have a look at the new hoodie.
