A Message from Mrs Knox

The week has just flown by! A wonderful array of activities from World Ocean Day to a wartime tour of historic sites around Surrey to Year 6 on their PGL camp in Osmington Bay, GCSE exams and a Duke of Edinburgh hike today. This evening, I am very much looking forward to the "Evening of Original Works" with pupils showcasing music, art and poetry and finally to toasting a marshmallow or two with Year 3 on their overnight camp! Phew!! Please do join us tomorrow morning if you have a spare hour during our Forum Garden Build. We will be filling the raised beds, building the greenhouse and adding stones to the gabions for the bench as well as planting veggies and flowers. It is so exciting watching this project take shape. Have a lovely weekend.

Year 9 History Tour

On Monday Year 9 deployed on their first outdoors (damp) event of the week, a wartime tour designed to educate and perhaps impress the pupils about such significant history existing around us from perilous times. The first site was behind the Spectrum Leisure Centre in Guildford which contains over 150 concrete blocks known as 'dragon's teeth' on a slope leading to the River Wye. Hastily constructed in the face of Nazi invasion in mid 1940, these were designed to delay or divert any German tanks spearheading attempts to capture Guildford, which was also a 'gateway' to London. A 20-minute muddy uphill walk from Shere carpark took us to our second site, two concrete bunkers on the ridge overlooking the village which were part of the 'GCHQ Stopline'. Home Guard soldiers would, again, have tried to stop or delay any advance of the German army to London. Our final visit was to Albury Heath cricket ground, which was the site of a speech by General Montgomery (better known as 'Monty'), to 10,000 Canadian troops in May 1944 prior to their assault on the Normandy beaches on D Day on 6th June 1944, aptly enough the same date as our excursion! Our gallant band of 40 were drilled into their position by Sgt Majors Will R and Toby T, and subsequently addressed by Generals Helena K and Violetta P. These four looked resplendent in uniforms lent by Major and Lt Col Lodge respectively. Class dismissed!

World Ocean Day

It was World Ocean Day on Wednesday 8th June and the Prep School enjoyed a morning carousel of different activities. The theme for this year was Revitalisation: Collective Action for the Ocean.

To start the morning we had an assembly lead by Year 6 who have been working hard in their Endeavour lessons to write and perform their own play scripts. We enjoyed two different plays, both of which had a very clear moral lesson linked to World Ocean Day. Both groups produced wonderful performances; well acted, humorous and thoughtful - it was clear that they had made an excellent effort to do their best.

For the remainder of the morning the pupils worked in their Houses, moving between the four very different activities

They enjoyed an Art activity based on the short film “A Whale’s Tale” and we look forward to seeing their very impressive whale on display in the Prep corridor.

There was also a story writing activity where each House (and in fact Year 6 and Year 7!) contributed to creating a magnificently moving story about life in the ocean.

The last two activities were linked to both Science and PSHE and pupils had to think about the reality of what is happening in our oceans.

In the first one pupils were introduced to “biodiversity” and “ecosystems” and they had to create their own healthy ecosystem. They learnt that there are many many different types of coral but that they can be very easily damaged.

Finally the pupils had an opportunity to think about whether the pollution of our oceans can be reversed. They had to create their own polluted ocean using different materials, such as food colouring to represent chemicals and washing up liquid to represent acid rain. As they added each material to their ocean they observed what the consequences were to their (sponge) fish. Having polluted their beautifully clean oceans the pupils then had to think about how they could clean them up again. They all concluded that it would be much better for our world if we could stop adding more and more pollutants to our oceans.

Gosh, it's hard to believe that we've only had five days of school since our half term break! The children and staff have returned ready and raring to go and, with World Ocean Day, an ISA athletics event, the Children's Festival at Greenfields and PGL to name but a few, they have got stuck straight into a mixture of learning activities and opportunities.

In Prep School Craft club on Monday, pupils collected natural materials to create their own mythical creatures. There was a mixture of both 2D and 3D designs, and all pupils demonstrated extraordinary imagination and creativity to produce their own individual beast. In Pre-prep STEAM club on Tuesday, pupils created stained glass windows using 2D shapes. It was a real challenge, cutting into the paper at a specific point, and the pupils should feel proud of the control and motor skills they utilised to achieve their tremendous final pieces.

On Wednesday morning, whilst the Prep School took part in World Ocean Day activities, Reception and Year 1 pupils impressed their parents during our Open Swimming Session. The children relished the opportunity to show off their skills and we look forward to inviting parents back to see their further progress in the Autumn Term.

Year 4 pupils have been putting the final touches to the games and activities they have been preparing in Endeavour lessons. They are very much looking forward to enjoying them alongside Year 5 next week, whilst away in the Isle of Wight. 'Crab football', a sandcastle building competition, a scavenger hunt, Snap - featuring places of interest on the Isle of Wight - and a quiz are all on the agenda. I'm sure that the pupils and staff will thoroughly enjoy the entertainment you've organised, well done and thank you Year 4!

The Pre-prep department have been delighted to welcome Miss Harris this week. Miss Harris will be assisting in Nursery for the remainder of this term and officially taking on the role of Deputy Nursery Manager in September. I've no doubt you'll join us in making her feel most welcome in our School community.

As we look ahead to next week, pupils are now aware of their new Form Teacher for next academic year and look forward to spending Tuesday in their new Form room with any new classmates for our Familiarisation Day.

Mr Wright

After a well earned half-term break we have had another busy week in the Senior School with GCSE Exams back underway and 'big hitters' such as Maths and Physics taking place for the year 11 cohort in Ness Hall. Exam feedback has been taking place for the rest of the year groups; undoubtedly the most important part of the examining process, this allows pupils to see where they did or did not do well with an eye on continual improvement and learning from our mistakes. We do hope that pupils take the process seriously but nonetheless we are always keen to reiterate that this is a learning process and that mistakes and setbacks are an integral part of this. We see what went wrong, we understand how to ensure we won't make the same mistake again and we move on positively.

Outside the classroom Year 9 went on a fascinating trip around local sites of historic interest (who knew there were so many!?) led by the irrepressibly enthusiastic Mr Lodge whilst Mr Herbert took an outstanding cohort of athletes to Bromley to compete in the ISA Junior London South Regional Finals. Various personal successes were achieved with a number of Personal Best performances and some now qualifying for the national competition. Well done!

What Parents Need to Know about the Metaverse

‘Metaverse’ is a relatively new term to many, however the concept has been around for some time. Videogames, for example, use many aspects of the metaverse; avatars, digital currency, mini-games, and open communication. A metaverse can also take many forms; Fortnite can be seen as a metaverse, as is Roblox. Put simply, a metaverse is an online environment where people interact, play games and express themselves. Away from traditional videogames, there are newer and more ‘dedicated’ metaverses such as Decentraland, The Sandbox and Somnium Space which are akin to Second Life.

In the guide, you'll find tips on a number of potential risks such as anonymity, psychological impact and unsafe areas.

ISA Junior Athletics Competition

Nineteen Prep School athletes set off nice and early to the ISA London South Junior Athletics Meeting on Tuesday morning. Although a little nervous, everyone involved performed extremely well in their attempt to beat competitors from twenty one other schools. The standard of the competition was very high and all of the Duke of Kent School athletes should be incredibly proud of their performances on the day. Holly B, Rebekah S and Alfie H all qualified for the final of their sprint events and Arthur H missed out on qualification to the National Finals by one second in his 600m run. Ruby W finished third in her long jump and Arthur S jumped really well and won the Year 4 long jump; he will now join our Senior School finalists who will represent London South at the National Finals in Manchester next Monday. Well done to all who took part.

Boys' Cricket: U10 v. Frensham Heights

This Wednesday, the U10 Boys' Cricket team played against Frensham Heights. Frensham won the toss and decided to bat first, throughout the innings Duke of Kent bowled fantastically, very consistent with their accuracy. Both Harry L and Henry O were very impressive with their bowling, this lead to Frensham ending their innings on a score of 40. It was our turn to bat and the innings started very well with a great opening partnership between Thibaut J and Ben W. After some good bowling from Frensham in the middle overs, Duke of Kent School came back with a good finish to the end of the innings, ending on a winning score of 57. Well played to everyone involved, some great cricket on display with a few great catches during the first innings especially.

Years 7 and 8 Girls' House Cricket

On Wednesday, Years 7 and 8 girls enjoyed an afternoon of House Cricket on the Wilsons' Pitch and the sun even made an appearance to make it the ultimate cricket experience! There were some brilliant matches played by all teams and it was fantastic to see the huge progress that the girls have made with their cricket this year. Some particular areas of improvement were communication when running between the wickets and the bowling accuracy. Each house played the other three houses in a box format with Kestrel coming out on top winning all three of their matches! Hawk were close behind with a win, a draw and a loss earning them second place. Peregrine played some great cricket but narrowly lost to Hawk putting them in 3rd place with Buzzard getting a brilliant draw against Hawk but finishing in 4th. Congratulations to all the girls involved and particularly: Niamh A, Jess I, Sydney R, Emma F, Annabel O, Anna S and Maggie B for scoring multiple boundaries for their teams often including 6s! There was also some wonderful bowling with Clara H-S, Bella S, Phoebe A, Mercy M and Francesca R demonstrating some very accurate bowling with good technique! As always, all the girls showed great team spirit and sportsmanship when encourage their team. Well done to you all for a great afternoon of cricket.

Results:

1st - Kestrel

2nd - Hawk

3rd - Peregrine

4th - Buzzard

Those who follow our social media accounts may have noticed our logo displaying the rainbow colours this week. The rainbow represents hope and the colour and vibrancy diversity adds to our world.

June is Pride month and as a School it is important for us to recognise and celebrate the diversity of this and our own community. Pride month is a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community’s ability to be their authentic selves and identify as they choose. Sadly, not every part of the world legally allows the LGBTQ+ communities the opportunity to be heard and seen but our message at Duke of Kent is one of acceptance to all. It is only when we accept ourselves that we can be our true and authentic selves and this is a cause for celebration.

We are all individuals and as such represent a wide array of opinions, beliefs and choices. We encourage our pupils to be accepting of everyone whether or not others’ choices reflect their own.

Maybe we don’t understand everything about a movement, culture or community but that shouldn’t stop us being interested and supporting others.  As I said to the pupils during an assembly at LGBTQ+ history month ‘I am not asking you to walk in someone else’s shoes, just to respect their choice to wear the shoes that they want.’

It is also important for me to remind students that as a Humanistic Counsellor, conversations with myself in the context of wellbeing support are characterised by confidentiality, non-judgement and unconditional positive regard.

A child-friendly explanation of Pride and its origins as a conversation starter with your children.

Mrs Douglas

This morning, I thoroughly enjoyed sharing some first aid knowledge and skills with our Year 9 pupils in readiness for their practice Duke of Edinburgh Expedition today.  In their groups they had to consider how they would deal with given first aid scenarios, using the supplies that we provide in their DofE first aid kits.  There was some enthusiastic sharing of ideas on everything from bleeding wounds, to broken bones, to severe allergic reactions, hypothermia, heat exhaustion, burns and head injuries.  Finally we discussed basic life support and had a practice of cardiac compressions with our CPR dummies.

Let's hope none of this is needed on their walks today as they venture out into the wilds of Surrey!  We shall all look forward to hearing their tales of adventure when they get back to school.  For their qualifying expedition in September, year 9 will get the full Bronze DofE experience, with two walks and an overnight camp in between - this time unaccompanied by staff unlike today (medical paperwork to follow - please can parents complete and return by end of the term).  I have encouraged all the pupils to download the St Johns Ambulance app onto their phones as a useful resource "just in case".  Inevitably in real world emergency scenarios, first aid knowledge can be hard to remember when the adrenaline is flowing.  I strongly recommend this to all parents too - you never know when you may come across a real world situation where you can offer help to someone in need, and the app is a great resource to have to hand:

https://www.sja.org.uk/get-advice/free-first-aid-app/

Elsewhere at school, we have a busy few weeks to look forward to, with many pupils heading out on trips - year 6 get back today from their PGL adventure, and year 3 are excited for their overnight camp this evening.  Next week some of the trips coming up include year 4 and 5 head off to the Isle of Wight on Wednesday, and year 7 will get to explore Hampton Court Palace on Thursday.  Please can parents remember to give their children travel nausea medication at home before school and hayfever medication if they will need it for the trip.

Have a lovely weekend - stay safe out there!

Senior School Optional Hoodie

The Senior School hoodies have been redesigned by members of the School Council and the finished product can be seen above.  They have done a fantastic job at putting this design together and now finally getting to see the finished product.

This new hoodie is available from Stevenson's on their website: https://www.stevensons.co.uk/.  There is also the option to have your child's initials printed onto the front of the hoodie for a slight additional cost, something we would advise to avoid mixing up tops with other pupils. This hoodie is not an essential item of School uniform, so there is no expectation for pupils to have it.

If you wish to see the sample, please pop into the Main Office to see me and have a look at the new hoodie.
