 A message from Mr Southee

The pupils have got into the swing of the term this week with the return of fixtures and trips heading out. The routines of the week have been picked up again and this helps pupils in staying grounded and having an idea of what each day may hold. However, we know that everyday is a new adventure! The adventures this week have included Nursery heading off to Little Street, Year 6 to SES Water and nearly all of the Prep and Senior School taking part in fixtures - fantastic! I was lucky enough to take the Year 7s for their first rugby match in Senior School. I could not have been prouder of the determination, resilience and improvement I saw from the boys in the match. These three attributes are key to pupils development in all areas and we see them in abundance every day here at Duke of Kent School.

Nursery visit to Little Street

This week, Nursery embarked on their eagerly awaited annual trip to Little Street in Frimley. The children were delighted by the diverse resources at Little Street and enthusiastically explored the site, engaging in imaginative role-play activities.

Little Street offers a unique advantage with its flexible layout, allowing children to freely move themselves and the resources around. This facilitated exploration and independent play. The site boasts a variety of role-play areas, including a supermarket, cafe, a vet clinic, a construction site, a theatre, and even a fire helicopter, amongst others.

The children exhibited exemplary behaviour throughout the trip and returned to school ready for a delicious packed lunch.

Year 6 trip to SES Water

On Thursday, Year 6 pupils set off to Edenbridge to visit the Bough Beech reservoir. In Science this term, we have been looking at separating mixtures and dissolving; our visit to the reservoir was an excellent demonstration of how this learning is used on a much larger scale and as part of our day to day lives. Upon arrival, our tutors, Chris and Lisa, gave us a brief history about the reservoir and talked us through how the SES water treatment centre works, using multiple processes to clean the water in order to make it safe for their customers to use and drink in their homes. Once we had heard about the various stages of the operation, it was time to see it in action! A behind the scenes tour of the tanks where the water goes through chlorination, screening, clarification and sand filtration was fascinating.

Despite the drizzle, the reservoir - which was 2km in length and 1km wide - was vast and beautiful. We walked along the dam and were permitted entry to the valve tower. Our tour then took us down underneath the reservoir, where we followed the enormous pipes that carry the water over to the treatment centre. Our sessions then finished with a visit to the 'Blue Zone'. This contained three activities where we needed to: guess how many household activities such as a shower, washing machine loads, toilet flushes and cups of tea we'd manage to get out of a cubic metre of water; find the difference between the quantity of water used by 'water wasters' and 'water efficients', and consider ways in which we could reduce our own water usage; and organise a series of pipes in order to supply a dozen miniature houses with water. The children thoroughly enjoyed all three activities, and the fun and engaging way in which they were presented. Our sincerest thanks to SES water for a fantastic and informative day!

Junior Riding Team Success

Our Junior Riding Team competed in the NSEA Championship at Felbridge last weekend. The team, consisting of Eva W, Seren G, Logan N and Roman N, came 3rd in a very strong field. Congratulations to them all as they have now qualified for the championship at Hickstead this Summer. This is a brilliant start to the year and we look forward to sharing more of their achievements throughout the year!

As the week which started with ‘Blue Monday’ draws to a close, I’m pleased to report that Pre-prep and the Prep School have been filled with happy faces and lots of enthusiasm. I’m sure that having some fun trips, such as Nursery’s outing to Little Street and Year 6’s visit to the reservoir can only have helped!

As part of the Big Bird Watch this week, Reception made bird feeders and some tasty ‘maggots’ out of bird seed and suet. The children have enjoyed the opportunity to connect with nature and learn more about the birds in our environment. I’m sure the local birds were very pleased with their new woodland dining options!

This week, Year 2 have been developing their technology skills on the School laptops. They practiced logging in, identifying keyboard keys, and also explored some aerial views of Cranleigh.

There have been a number of Scientific highlights in the Prep School this week. Year 3 investigated the strength of different magnets. They discovered that the largest magnet was the strongest, attracting a paper clip from an impressive 3.5 cm away, while the smaller ring magnet only managed the feat at 0.5 cm. Year 5 explored buoyancy in their Science lessons by measuring the weight of objects in water and air using Newton meters. Meanwhile, Year 6 investigated which materials are soluble and insoluble.

Many of the classes have also been making good progress with their new DT projects: Year 3 have begun making prototypes of linkage toys using cardboard and lollipop sticks while Year 4 worked collaboratively in groups to design prototypes for hedgehog houses. These models, made from card, are the first step in a project to install real hedgehog houses around the school grounds. Year 5 learned about different types of wood to inform their choices for their current exciting DT project: creating animal-themed bookends.

Meanwhile, in English, Year 3 have used ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ as inspiration to write their own letters of frustration from items in their pencil cases to their owners. I’ll never look at a pencil sharpener with a lead stuck in it in quite the same way again! Year 6 have also been writing heartfelt letters between the protagonist in their class novel, Holes, and his mother.

Stars of the Week

Nursery: Rupert G for coping really well on our school trip and for engaging with such enthusiasm.

Charlotte A for settling into Nursery life so readily and for participating with happy enthusiasm.

Reception: Ellie F for careful letter formation and improved confidence in phonics

Bobby C for fantastic enthusiasm and continued progress in reading.

Year 1: Humphrey G for self-managing your behaviour to meet expectations on how to behave in the classroom whilst maintaining such a high standard of work.

Flynn H for continuously working hard in every lesson and for embracing extension challenges. I was particularly impressed with your investigation of different materials in Science this week.

Year 2: Owen G for demonstrating a wonderful attitude towards challenge and always taking care with your work.

Sienna H for your typing in ICT. You navigated the keyboard successfully and remembered capital letters and full stops.

Swimmer of the Week

Gracie B - Continued growth in confidence, leading to a reduced reliance on swimming aids.

It has been another lively week in the Senior School, starting with our annual House Music Quiz assembly. During this event, House Captains and selected house members joined forces to tackle music related questions, aiming for the highest scores. The quiz, skilfully created and hosted by our resident quiz master, Mr Rye, provided plenty of entertainment while challenging even the most musically savvy among us. For some staff, it also served as a reminder of changing times—or perhaps just our fondness for older tunes!

This week, house leaders and captains have been carefully selecting songs for the highly anticipated and fiercely competitive House Music celebration, set for 7th March. Song choices are allocated based on quiz rankings, making the competition even more intense.

House meetings took place today, giving Houses their first opportunity to begin planning for what promises to be a closely fought contest. Of course, I will not reveal which songs each House is working on, as all teams are keeping their choices under wraps to maintain a competitive edge!

It has been a hugely productive week for many students around the School with a number reaching the milestone of 25 Merit points:
Ben B, Lauren B, Archie B, Amelie C, Millicent W, Holly B, Ben D, Ben W, Erin C, Molly F, Ben O, George S, Dom K, Jack M, Oscar V.

A special mention goes to Penny N and Toby W who have surpassed 100 Merit points and received their recognition badges. Even more impressive, Edie H and Mercy M have exceeded 300 Merit points and have been presented with their well deserved recognition badges. A huge well done to all!

Mr Wyllie

Mr Rye

The Years 7 and 8 Girls' House Netball matches showcased some fantastic team spirit and individual performances, despite the freezing conditions. In the first game, Peregrine & Hawk faced Kestrel & Buzzard. Kestrel & Buzzard emerged victorious with 9 goals, with Millie W praising Holly B for her excellent shooting throughout the match. The second game saw Peregrine & Buzzard take on Kestrel & Hawk, with Peregrine & Buzzard scoring 6 goals. Millie W highlighted Lauren B's impressive defending and crucial interceptions, which helped her team. In the final game, Peregrine & Kestrel played against Buzzard & Hawk. Charlotte C demonstrated noticeable improvement, with her footwork and timing earning her well-deserved recognition. The afternoon ended with a win for Buzzard, and all players showed great resilience in the challenging weather. Well done to everyone for their dedication and effort!

What Parents & Educators Need to Know about TikTok

Among children – and especially teenagers – TikTok boasts approximately 220 million users, providing a near-endless reel of short clips intended to entertain, educate and more. However, along with its enormous userbase comes a significant number of possible risks: Ofcom have dubbed it the most likely app on which teen users would potentially suffer harm.

With the platform reaching astronomical levels of success among the younger generation, it’s vitally important for parents and educators to understand the risks it poses. This free guide lets you know about the most prominent potential dangers associated with TikTok and offers expert advice on how to safeguard youngsters who are navigating the site.

Next Thursday the 30th of January is stem4’s Parents’ Mental Health Day. stem4 are a charity specialising in supporting children and teenagers’ mental health by providing training and resources for educators, carers and parents. Our Mental Health Ambassadors attended a conference two years ago led by stem4 and came back with some fantastic ideas about supporting young people’s mental health in school. Our ‘Dress Wacky for Wellbeing’ Day came from our pupil’s ideas inspired at this event.

Stem4 also have a number of free to download apps for young people designed to help them with various mental health issues. These include:-

https://calmharm.stem4.org.uk/ - for helping resist the urge to self harm

https://clearfear.stem4.org.uk/ - for managing anxiety

https://movemood.stem4.org.uk/ - managing low mood

https://worthwarrior.stem4.org.uk/ - managing self esteem and disordered eating

The yearly awareness day aims to highlight the link between parents’ mental health and family wellbeing. Another reminder that self care and focusing on one’s own needs is even more important when you care for others too. This year the theme is #ScreenSmartParenting and they have provided links to training and resources for parents to help with promoting healthy screen habits and digital environments for children.

Mrs Douglas

A few more bugs have been circulating at School this week.  Please can pupils remember to perform regular and thorough hand hygiene, and sneeze/cough into the inside of elbows, put tissues in the bin, and then wash hands again!

The 48 hour rule applies to cases of vomiting and/or diarrhoea.  Also, pupils with a temperature of 37.8 or higher should stay at home until their temperature is normal (without the assistance of medication).

Pupils who are present at School, but signed off games due to injury or recent illness, are expected to stay at School on match day afternoons and support their cohort from the sideline as per our absence policy (we encourage pupils to stay "on games" where possible given the multitude of benefits of exercise and fresh air).  Please communicate with the PE Department and the School Nurses about any off games requests as soon as you possibly can, so that we can make any necessary alterations to teams in good time.  Your child should bring a warm coat and hat/gloves so they are comfortable on the sidelines.

Senior School optional hoodie

The Senior School hoodies have been redesigned by members of the School Council and the finished product can be seen below. They have done a fantastic job at putting this design together and now finally getting to see the finished product.

This new hoodie is available from Stevenson's on their website: https://www.stevensons.co.uk/.  There is also the option to have your child's initials printed onto the front of the hoodie for a slight additional cost, something we would advise, to avoid mixing up tops with other pupils. This hoodie is not an essential item of School uniform, so there is no expectation for pupils to have it.

If you wish to see the sample, please pop into the Main Office and have a look.
