A message from Mrs Knox

It has been a fabulous start to the new term with so much going on in and around the School with the added addition of snow which has been great fun. Year 11 began their Mock GCSE examinations today and they are to be congratulated on the manner in which they embarked upon this important part of their education. Right at the other end of the spectrum, Nursery children started their exploration of the Polar regions and will be learning about the Inuit people and Huskies this term. It is at times like this that I just love reflecting on the learning journey each of our pupils takes, from that early curiosity and excitement from our youngest to the critical thinking and problem solving displayed by our Senior School pupils. This learning journey prepares the children so well for the world ahead of them. Have a lovely weekend.

Mrs Knox

Visiting Speaker, Olympian Josh Bruyns

What an amazing Friday morning! We were incredibly lucky to welcome Josh Bruyns, ex-pupil, back to Duke of Kent School for a wonderfully inspirational assembly about his amazing journey to the Olympics as a Speed Climber! Josh gave a brilliant message to our pupils about showing great dedication to both his sport and his studies and embracing opportunities.

Josh was a pupil at Duke of Kent School from 2016-2019. He started climbing when he was 11 years old at a local climbing wall and has continued to follow his passion into his early adult years. He is currently studying Economics and MFL at Warwick University alongside his climbing training. He has been on the international circuit for Speed Climbing for a few years and qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games to represent South Africa! Josh showed the students some brilliant pictures from his Olympic experiences and told us all some fascinating insights into life in the Olympic village!

After the assembly, our Senior Sport Scholars had a chance to ask some more questions and see Josh's pin collection from the Olympic Games. Josh, thank you so much for giving up your time to come into School to inspire our pupils - we so appreciate it. We are wishing Josh all the best with his next competitions and look forward to hopefully seeing him at the Olympics in LA in 2028!

Snowballs and steam aren't usually closely associated, but they have been two of my highlights returning to School this week. It never ceases to amaze me how children can make snowballs from even the most meagre smatterings and flakes, and we even got to play with them in the glorious sunshine, Thursday lunchtime. I led STEAM club in Pre-prep this week, and wished I could have captured - in more than just a photograph - the awe and delight on the pupils' faces as our experiment unfolded before their disbelieving eyes. It genuinely felt like they were watching magic happen right in front of them.

Conducting science experiments requires observation and patience, two skills we also talked about in Assembly this week within the context of how we can all be more aware of what goes on around us. After starting last term by encouraging the pupils to participate as fully as possible in School, this week I suggested a new focus - to be aware and considerate of others and our surroundings, in order to be a good friend and citizen. We were all inspired by the example of Louis Braille' helping the blind to read by honing their other senses, and becoming more aware of things from a different perspective.

In this vein, all Year 6s are taking on some newly established Prefect duties, in response to suggestions from Prep School Council that they have more roles of responsibility around the department. That the children themselves proposed this change is most heartening, and we look forward to seeing the impact of their stewardship in the cloakroom, Pre-prep department and the library to mention a few. Lastly, a thank you to those who purchased books for your children at our Book Fair last March - the credit earned with Scholastic has allowed us to add an array of new titles to our library shelves. Perfect preparation for the Readathon which began this week!

Mr Wright

What a joyous start to the Spring Term this week has been! Snow has graced us twice already, transforming the School grounds into a magical winter wonderland. Pupils eagerly made the most of the snow while it lasted, bringing joy and excitement to the start of the term. The School has been bustling with energy as teaching and learning resumed in full swing on Tuesday.

Year 11 pupils have spent the past few days diligently preparing for their Mock exams, which began today. We wish them the very best as they navigate the week ahead and demonstrate their hard work in these assessments.

This morning, the entire Senior School had the privilege of welcoming back former pupil Josh Bruyns, who shared his incredible journey to the Olympics. It was a pleasure to hear about his impressive achievements, and his assembly served as a powerful source of inspiration. His story reminded everyone of the remarkable outcomes that can be achieved through hard work, dedication, and perseverance.

The beginning of a new term and a new year is often a trigger for reflexion and change; something that we should not limit to the end of December and beginning of January.

Indeed self reflection and goal-setting is something we encourage in regard to academic work and class performance throughout the year with the pupils.

In terms of our wellbeing, growth comes when we take time to reflect and consider our ‘self’ in all aspects of our life. Talking therapy is based on the concept of talk, reflection and possible change in order to keep striving toward a heightened state of self awareness. This is referred to by different terminology from different theoretical modalities but remains broadly as our wellbeing.

It is only by reflecting on our mood and considering what we may be lacking or need, that we are able to identify what may help our needs be fulfilled. Rather than shying away from considering what we are feeling because it may seem uncomfortable or scary, we should dedicate time throughout the year in order to do this and strive toward being our best, most healthy selves. This is part of our self care; whether it takes the form of exercise, meditation/ mindfulness, hobbies etc.

As parents or carers for others, it is important to recognise that we lead by example and indeed that we are better positioned to ‘care’ for others when we show care to ourselves.

So, if specific resolutions are not your thing, I would encourage a commitment to self to allow time for self care and reflection this year to facilitate change and healthy wellbeing.

A promise for you with no penalties in failure. Self care is as much about kindness, gentleness and forgiveness to ourselves as it is about future intent.

With that in mind, I wish you all a very Happy New Year!

Mrs Douglas

The snow has made for a chilly return to school.  Please can all pupils bring a coat, gloves and hat to school, and have base layers/tracksuits, hats and gloves available for games lessons.

This evening there is a meeting for pupils (and their respective parents) attending the Rwanda trip in October, where the medical form will be handed out.  Please can these forms be completed in full and returned to Mrs Sarjant (leave them at the front office) by the end of February to allow us to start making plans for medical and first aid provisions.  Please pay particular attention to the need for travel immunisations and malaria medication.

Pupils attending the Ski Trip in March should receive a medical form this week or early next week from their form tutors.  Please can these be completed and returned to Mrs Sarjant (as above) as soon as possible but by the end of January latest.

Any queries regarding pupils' health (illness, injury, medication etc) in relation to residential trips, please email the trip leader as well as Mrs Sarjant (csarjant@dokschool.org)

Senior School optional hoodie

The Senior School hoodies have been redesigned by members of the School Council and the finished product can be seen below. They have done a fantastic job at putting this design together and now finally getting to see the finished product.

This new hoodie is available from Stevenson's on their website: https://www.stevensons.co.uk/.  There is also the option to have your child's initials printed onto the front of the hoodie for a slight additional cost, something we would advise, to avoid mixing up tops with other pupils. This hoodie is not an essential item of School uniform, so there is no expectation for pupils to have it.

If you wish to see the sample, please pop into the Main Office and have a look.
